Paula Abdul performs on Divas Live, does hysterical Ellen impression

I’ve got to admit it, I have a newfound appreciation for Paula Abdul’s comedic abilities. Last night Paula hosted VH1’s “Divas Live” – and to say she’s getting rave reviews is an understatement. She lightheartedly poked fun at “American Idol” a few times, sang, danced, and did an all-around fabulous job. But the best part was the show’s opening. Paula did the most uncanny impression of Ellen DeGeneres, who ended up filling Paula’s judge spot on Idol. It was hysterical not just because Paula was making fun of the situation, but because her impression is so freaking good. If I weren’t wearing my glasses I would absolutely believe that was Ellen.

Paula Abdul mocked her American Idol replacement, Ellen DeGeneres, while hosting the VH1 Divas Live concert Thursday night. Dressed in a blonde wig and the talk show host’s trademark suit, Abdul, 47, joked: “Why are you all staring at me? Can’t a girl try out for a new job?” She then took a seat in a chair similar to the one DeGeneres conducts interviews from on her show.

“All kidding aside, [I have] nothing but love for Ellen, and I wish you the best of luck and congratulations on your new gig,” added Abdul, who hosted the show from the Brooklyn Academy of Music in NYC.

Abdul said DeGeneres could reach out to her if she ever needed advice.

“And call me! You gotta call me if you have any Simon problems, ’cause you know, I know him best,” she said.

That wasn’t the only American Idol reference on the show. Abdul’s first line after taking the stage? A spin-off of Idol host Ryan Seacrest’s traditional show opener. “I’m Paula Abdul, and this is not American Idol!” she said. Former Idols Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks and Kelly Clarkson also performed. Abdul also sang a medley of her hits, including “Straight Up,” “Forever Your Girl” and “Opposites Attract” — during which a photo of Simon Cowell was flashed on a giant screen behind her.

Everyone knows Paula’s a great dancer since she worked as a choreographer for many years. But her impression is fantastic for more than her dance skills. She gets all of Ellen’s mannerisms down pat: her facial expressions, signature moves, that thing she does with her shoulders, the awkward stiff-legged thing she does. I don’t think there are any dance terms for Ellen’s moves; that’s just the best description I could come up with. The whole thing was executed flawlessly, and it very easily could have been cheesy and unfunny.

It seems like it was done in fun – I mean it’s not like Ellen stole Paula’s job. She and the producers couldn’t come to a salary agreement and negotiations broke down. So they started looking elsewhere. While Ellen’s a fun choice that’ll definitely bring some much-needed new energy to the show, I doubt she was the first person the AI producers thought of. And I’m guessing she wasn’t at their doorstep begging for a job the morning it was announced Paula wasn’t doing the show. I’d assume there are no real hard feelings between Paula and Ellen. Now, time for some retributive dancing: Ellen with MC Skat Kat.

I still don’t care for her, but I will “straight up” tell you that she did an awesome impression of Ellen.

  2. Sassy says:

I think she’s bitter about the whole situation. She’s trying to keep it professional and be nice, but I know deep down inside it really irks her.

  3. scorpiogal says:

That was a hilarious impression- dead on! But yeah, deep down you know it’s got to be hurtful to her that she was relaced by Ellen.

  4. Firestarter says:

I am sure Ellen can appreciate the humor behind it.

  5. Jag says:

Wow… She was totally coherent. lol I had thought she wouldn’t be, considering she almost fell off the stage at one point while dancing during her medley. She also seemed a little stiff and slow while dancing, too, so I didn’t even bother watching the show. (Well, that and it had Miley on it.) Pretty cool, and yes, she had Ellen down pat. lol

  6. Praise St. Angie! says:

I’m sure Ellen got a laugh out of that.

I forgot what a good dancer Paula is. Even when trying to imitate Ellen’s (kinda) stiff dance moves, she looked really good.

Girl can dance, I’ll give her that!

  7. Ellen's a two-face says:

Of course it irks her. The same person is posting the same meaningless “bitter” comment everywhere. Do you even know the meaning of it?

Paula should be irked. Those guys did a real nasty number on her, and publicly. It’s not like it happened 20 years ago either.

Despite the writer’s overly generous comments about Ellen, Ellen is underhanded and should not have participated in this fiasco. She is now a party to it. She didn’t need the work either (unlike many other unemployed people.)

Meanwhile, this bit was hilarious and genius.

I was going to type exactly what Praise St Angiel wrote until I realized I was typing basically the same thing. I was disappointed though, that she didn’t straddle that big round coffee table and do Ellen’s sorta-limbo-impression thing.

  9. mxml says:

    that was hilarious

  10. sandy says:

  11. Xx says:

Good for her. Keep up the good work kiddo!!

  12. Meow Mix says:

Love that she did that. I think by poking fun and making it funny she is on the road to getting over it.
It also shows that she’s not bitter. I really respect her for this and also shows that she is not feeling sorry for herself.

  13. YoMomma says:

I’m going to miss Paula and Simon’s little love feuds.

  14. blind item reader says:

I was totally embarrassed for her.

  15. Ameia says:

Really good impression but I think her dancing is a lot more fluid than Ellen’s which gave her away.
I think she’s pretty good-natured all in all.

  16. Ally says:

Remember when Paula Abdul was Janet Jackson’s awesome choreographer and a great dancer. Good times.

  17. Whatever says:

I laughed but Paula is not smooth enough to be a host on a show like this.

AI she had very few lines and stumbled over her words a lot. I thought she was drunk half the time because of it and now she has this show?

See what happens when you got money kids, everyone thinks you are great, loves you, and lies to your face…

  18. Annie says:

Loved it!! Paula is hilarious. That was spot on!

  19. Whatever says:

Yeah she so funny because she so stupid. I loved the lipsync she did!

  20. 4Real says:

She can’t hide that she’s a better dancer than Ellen. It’s kinda sad the whole thing because you can tell she’s upset about it. That’s the most sober I’ve seen her though.

  21. Lola says:

    *awkward*!
