Global Citizen CEO: We approached the Sussexes to co-chair ‘Vax Live’

If there were any questions about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s new power base, those questions were answered definitively on Sunday at the Vax Live event. When Prince Harry came on stage to talk about vaccines and making vaccines available across the world, he got a long standing ovation. The British media was MAD. But it just shows you that M&H were global superstars from the word go. They were superstars when they were part of the royal family too, but their Sussexit became one of the biggest stories of 2020. Then their Oprah interview has become one of the biggest stories of 2021. And now M&H have scored another win with the Vax Live event. So how did they end up as co-chairs for the event? Variety explains:

How do you get Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to sign on as campaign chairs of Global Citizen’s Vax Live: The Concert to Reunite the World? Just ask.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex immediately jumped on board when they were approached by Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans. “We said we need [a] champion of this campaign. Quite frankly they were immediately on the same page. It wasn’t a convincing. It was a conversation,” Evans told Variety at the concert taping on Sunday night at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. “They were so excited. They said, ‘We believe in the importance of vaccine equity.’ For them, it was an easy decision to do the right thing because they were so passionate already.

“When I spoke to Megan, she said we really should call on the private sector to rally and for American businesses to step up, so they convened a roundtable and they started getting to work, and they invited the private sector leaders to be part of the effort,” Evans continued. “They’ve approached it with such sincerity and such leadership. I’ve been extremely impressed with their amazing commitment to the cause.”

I love this. I love that Meghan and Harry did not approach Global Citizen. Global Citizen approached THEM and M&H were immediately on board and expanded the reach of the event to call on corporations and governments to commit to vaccine equity.

Meanwhile, Chrissy Teigen said words about her new friend Meghan:

Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, served as co-chairs for the event at which Teigen was a celebrity guest. Markle, who is currently pregnant with her and Harry’s second child, did not make an in-person appearance at the event, though her husband gave an impassioned speech. On the red carpet, Teigen talked about getting in touch with her regal new pal.

“I feel like our world has just gotten so small, through this whole pandemic and everything,” Teigen shared. “We have to go to Montecito and chill in the chicken house. Archie’s Cluckin’ Hut?”

In fact, the house, which was featured during Harry and Markle’s tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey in March, is called “Archie’s Chick Inn” and is named after their almost 2-year-old son, Archie.

“They’re so wonderful for co-chairing this,” Teigen added of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. “This is obviously such an incredibly important event that I’m so happy to be a part of.”

Archie’s Cluckin’ Hut?? Girl, no. Archie’s Chick Inn! Come on! Meghan and Harry are such cheeseballs. But hey, they are keeping it cute.

Meghan, girl…watch out with Chrissy. Nothing is secret with her.

    • BlueSky says:

Hopefully her “thirsty famewhore” radar is on.

    • Snuffles says:

Chrissy has never once spilled other people’s business. Her chronic over sharing is ALL about her and her family.

      • Watson says:

Yup. People can hate on Chrissy all they want but she doesn’t spill anyone else’s tea but her own. Her comment was cute enough to generate a headline but didn’t actually say *anything*.

      • Cessily says:

I like Chrissy she and her family on YouTube make me laugh. They may overshare but they are always kind and respectful. They have a beautiful family. She makes me want a robe collection lol

    • bonobochick says:

I haven’t forgotten about Chrissy’s rancid social media behavior re: Quvenzhane Wallis when she was a child and Courtney Stodden as a teen.

  2. Mel says:

Prepare for Salty tears and made up things to be angry about.

  3. Lauren says:

They were approached by Global Citizen with an idea and Meghan and Harry suggested a way for said idea to make an even bigger impact. The RF had charities in the UK lose this. Proactive people that would champion their causes bringing in real, tangible results. No empty words, no showing up and looking mildly engaged, just results.

  4. booboocita says:

Wonder if the Keenbridges will host some sort of gala fundraising event next. I doubt it, as it would require work. But I’m sure they’ll try to insinuate themselves into someone else’s planned future project as honorary chairs or honorary hosts or something.

  5. Rnot says:

Ouch. That really has to sting back at KP. They could have been basking in reflected glory but instead they’re paling by comparison, repeatedly. This is rapidly becoming an existential crisis for the monarchy. Harry and Meghan are the only thing that might be able to save it at this point but the RF are too stubborn or stupid to apologize and ask for help.

  6. Zebz says:

Meghan is so intelligent. I’m in awe of her. Just wow!!!

  7. Myra says:

Now that they are no longer shackled and inhibited by jealousy and trumped up protocols, they can wield their power and influence for the global good. This is what they were meant to be doing. Ribbons and plaques just wouldn’t have cut it.

  8. BlueToile says:

I am glad this story has killed the whole “Harry and Meghan begged to be co-chairs for attention” narrative out there in force with the haters.

  9. Dierski says:

Love seeing the video of his reception at the vax event! I really hope he let himself soak in some of the love from the crowd, he deserves it.

  10. Amelia says:

The sussexes have penned an open letter to leaders of vaccine producers and Global Citizen are encouraging public to co- sign:

    https://www.globalcitizen.org/en/content/prince-harry-meghan-letter-big-pharma-vaccines/

    • BothSidesNow says:

Signed it, and I appreciated that they implore the pharmaceutical companies of overriding the IP as it’s in the best interest of the world to supply the vaccines instead of claiming them as intellectual properties, thanks Bill Gates for sticking your nose wear it doesn’t belong, but to sell at cost as well.

      • Saucy&Sassy says:

I read yesterday that Moderna has committed 500,000,000 vaccines, but could only deliver 34,000,000 this year (lowest tired cost), so I can see why they’re asking them to up that number to 100,000,000. I hope pfizer and the rest of them do the same.

  11. Chelsea says:

The CEO from Global Citizen said on Aussie tv yesterday that H&M have been working on this for a month. I really have to laugh at how we all thought Meghan was chilling and takig it easy only find out in the last week that she’s been 1)raising tens of millions of dollars for vaccine equity, 2) holding roundtables with young girls and the Women’s Law Center, and 3) WRITING A BOOK. This woman just doesnt stop lmao.

  12. Abena Asantewaa says:

It’s interesting that, the media, is not objecting and whining about the use of duke and duchess of sussex for VAX Live, because, they want to claim this effort for the royal family. They wish it were W&K. Please donate your $5 to GLOBAL CITIZEN FOR VAX LIVE

    • Greywacke says:

Do you mean using their royal titles or them as individuals? Because there has been plenty of complaining about their involvement from the British tabloid media.

  13. L4frimaire says:

I wonder what’s with this narrative that the Sussexes have to ask to get involved with these initiatives, as though that’s a bad thing ,or that they are needy. They will occasionally do big events like this but that’s not all they’re doing obviously. These two are workhorses and want to establish themselves. They are trying to distinguish their brand and the worn they do as private citizens to be very different from their royal work. They couldn’t do anything like this as working royals because it may be considered too political or too overshadowing. Obviously the head of this organization wanted them involved, and they really got to work and brought a lot of people and pieces together. As Gayle King said, Harry and Meghan know people.

    • Likeyoucare says:

      @L4FRIMAIRE for the BM,
H&M need permission from the brf to do good things.
Unless if they want to hang out with criminals and paedophile. They will surely be welcome home with open arms.
H&m need to get their prioritise straight.
