Beyonce sings “Halo” to a little girl with leukemia

Beyonce sang a touching tribute to an 8-year-old fan in Sydney on Friday. A little girl named Chelsea, who has leukemia, was brought on stage where Beyonce sang a quieter version of her hit “Halo.” The video was posted on YouTube, and you can see lots of people in the audience crying. While it’s very touching it’s also hard to watch, especially when the lyrics are coupled with what this poor little girl is going through.

This is the emotional moment Beyonce invites a special fan to join her on stage for a unique version of Halo.

Chelsea, who is suffering from Leukemia, cuddles up to Beyonce as she sings: “Chelsea I can see your halo, I pray you won’t fade away.”

The powerful performance in Sydney has members of the audience bursting into tears and singing along to the personalised lyrics.

[From the Mirror]

At the end when Chelsea hugs Beyonce she clings to her a bit, and I can’t tell if that’s because she’s touched or sad, but either way it’s heartbreaking. While I understand Beyonce was probably trying to do something kind – and I’m not trying to take away from that in any way – I couldn’t help feeling like the lyrics of this song took on a more literal meaning. In the original version Beyonce means “halo” in the sense of an aura, but to me it seemed like she meant it literally – as in an angel’s halo – when she sang to this poor little girl. And if that’s the case, I suppose it still could be sweet or heartbreaking, depending on your perspective. It’s so sad to watch the video – I had to stop at several points because I was tearing up. Hopefully Chelsea gets better, and this becomes a story she tells to her grandkids one day.

Never heard the song, but I guess the little girl enjoyed it, so good for Beyonce. Hope Kanye doesn’t think another child might have been more deserving of being sung to.

  2. Celebitchy says:

I know this is so wrong, but Firestarter started it: “Chelsea, I’m very happy for you and Imma let Beyonce finish, but…”

  3. Firestarter says:

I hate to laugh CB, but that was funny!

  4. sassenach says:

    HAHAHA@celebitchy

  5. JayBird says:

Have you guys seen that quiz on Facebook, “Where will Kanye interrupt you?” It’s THE best quiz I’ve ever taken. According to my results, Kanye will interrupt me on my wedding day. It’s good to be able to plan.

  6. Persistent Cat says:

At least she didn’t sing Single Ladies.

Now I have to go take that quiz. I hope he interrupts me now while I’m at work, I’d love to bust out of here early.

  7. Seven says:

I took that too Jaybird. Kayne will interrupt me during my “first time” .

  8. JayBird says:

Great, just what we all need, another surprise during our “first time.”

  9. BitterBetty says:

“Chelsea, I’m very happy for you and Imma let Beyonce finish, but…”

  10. Firestarter says:

I am not on FB, but I did another quiz that said Kanye would interrupt me while I was selling coke!? WTF?

  11. Ash says:

haha, he interrupted me “on my wedding day”.

But damn, this is sad but nice of Beyonce.

  12. Obvious says:

My friend took the facebook quiz too. Kanye will interrupt her while giving birth-the best part? she’s 7 months pregnant.

That being said it was a very sweet thing for B to do. still not her biggest fan but she’s growing on me.

  13. yadira says:

Kanye interrupts me during an argument.

On another note, Beyonce redeemed herself in my book by doing this. The smile on that little girls face was so touching

  14. Cinderella says:

    I like Beyonce today.

  15. Petra X says:

Thought it was a bit mawkish myself.

  16. clare says:

This is the same Beyonce when on her way to a restaurant for dinner who whined and carried on when her limo was stuck in traffic due to an ambulance stopped helping a sick/injured person???
Notice that her PR of late has been showing her behave in a kinder, gentler manner…

  17. Firestarter says:

Thanks Petra for reminding me of the word mawkish, I remember that from high school English class and think it is a great descriptive word.

  18. mollination says:

I was crying before I even pushed play. I wish she would have sang something more uplifting than “I hope you don’t fade away” though. Get better Chelsea.

@bitterbetty – I don’t think that was a very good thing to say.

  19. Yae says:

I enjoyed the warmth of that performance. The child’s happiness is really all that mattered.

  20. dcv74 says:

That was such a beautiful thing for her to do for that little girl. I was crying almost immediately. I hope that she survives! God bless. By the way – stunned by the comments. “Funny” A little girl with a potentially fatal disease, fighting for her life. Is that what’s funny now?

  21. Hieronymus Grex says:

Lovely sentiment and all, but crack your wallet open and pay for her therapy and and a bone marrow transplant, Beyonce.

  22. Aspie says:

Good for Beyonce! MANY stars and singers haven’t done what she’s done so let’s give her a little more credit today instead of criticizing her or suggesting that she go beyond. She’s done enough, alright?

  23. BitterBetty says:

Uhhh… I’m pretty sure Firestarter, CB and other posters were making a joke AT KANYE’S EXPENSE by using this scenario to emphasize how absurd his behavior was at the VMA’s.

  24. karen says:

Has someone got the words to HALO or an avenue to obtain them.

    Thanks.
