Taylor Swift on why she’ll never forget Joe Jonas

Taylor Swift continues to impress me with the gracious way she’s handling both her fame and those who would try to bring her down. Last fall, Taylor released a song on her first album called “Forever and Always,” which she explained was about her split with Joe Jonas. She told Ryan Seacrest that when she finds the right guy she won’t remember the superstar who broke up with by voice mail, and said “When I look at that person, I’m not even going to remember the boy who broke up with me over the phone in 25 seconds when I was 18.”

Taylor has a new interview with Star Magazine in which she’s asked if she’ll ever forget Joe Jonas, and her response made me laugh out loud. Imagine your ex constantly staring at you from various poorly-made products aimed at young girls. She also addresses the Kanye “Imma let you finish” speech, and tells a story about an old crush surprising her after he’d realized that she’d written a song about him. I think I’m becoming a fan:

How upset were you after Kanye’s rant?
I can’t say it didn’t affect me. I had to perform live five minutes later. It wasn’t easy. But all the other artists showed me a lot of love in the hours after that.

Speaking of love, you write a lot about boys. Do they worry you’re going to write a song about them?
Look, if guys don’t want me to write bad songs about them, then don’t do bad things!

“Forever & Always” is about Joe Jonas dumping you over the phone. Is it hard when an ex is famous? Can you forget him?
Not when he’s on pencil sharpeners, T-shirts and the sides of buses!

But not all your songs are about heartbreak.
I’ve named names in songs about people I’ve had crushes on. Sometimes they won’t contact me about it, but they’ll put it on their MySpace page and get a big head about it.

Like who?
The guy from “Teardrops on My Guitar,” Drew, showed up in my driveway two years after the album came out. I was like, “You’re late!”

Are you looking for a boyfriend?
Someday I’ll find the guy who’s just right for me. I’m only 19. When I find that person, it’ll be wonderful.

[From Star Magazine, print edition, October 5, 2009]

Last November, Taylor recorded a video blog that made fun of Joe. (Linked video is an excerpt from a longer video) She held up a Joe Jonas doll and said “See, this one even comes with a phone. So he can break up with other dolls.”

I love her humor about her past and optimism about how she’ll find her match at some point. I really believe that you have to think that way if you want to find the right person, and that there’s someone out there for everyone. Whoever Tyler ends up with is going to have to stay on his toes, though, or she won’t hesitate to call him out on his bad behavior. This girl has a lot of spunk and class and we’re sure to hear much more about her.

I will never forget my first time with Joe Jonas either!

  2. Oi says:

yeah. Real classy Ryan. Just let it go already. I still don’t buy her 27 second phone call story. We’ll all never forget Joe J. because of Taylor!

  3. Sassy says:

Well, if she’s a strong girl, she’ll love the next man even more than Joe….and realize that what she had with Joe was just puppy love….

  4. db says:

I thought Joe was the gay one…

  5. Birdie says:

She’s grown on me too… It helps that she has actual talent. She writes her own music and really sings very sweetly. I feel like I’m too old to say this but I love Taylor Swift!

  6. Iggles says:

That sucks. The media won’t let her forget that phone call either. Oh well.

  7. gg says:

She’ll never forget him because he’s probably about 24 inches shorter than she is. She probably ran for her highest heels after he made his little pu$$y phone message.

Good parenting has manifested itself in this young lady. She has impressed me with things about herself for a while now. I know a lot of young people like her here in the south. Not musicians, but bright, humorous, make you feel good about the future generation type of people. Sadly we don’t hear as much about them as we do the ones that lack self-control, bad decision making and all the other unsavory things we could all bring to mind. Good for her.

“See, this one even comes with a phone. So he can break up with other dolls.”

    ROTFLMAO!

  10. nikki says:

bla bla bla she’s young! she’ll know others guys

  11. Colleen says:

Meh. None of those bros are as memorable as “Gary Jonas.”

“What if we changed our names…to the Donut Brothers?”

  12. Hieronymus Grex says:

He’d have to be gay to break up with that little cutie.

  13. Annie says:

I don’t doubt for a second that he did that to her, in under 27 seconds (or it’s free!) And come on guys, she’s 19. What else is she going to talk about other than boys?

You want her to discuss world peace and impoverished countries? You write what you know. And I can bet that there are a lot more 19 y/os out there (any gender) who’s concern is relationships and the like.

At least she’s honest, candid and very graceful/classy about the whole thing. Could’ve “bust the windows out his car”….

  14. RubyKaur says:

Well Karma is a bit@h aint it…..Joes recent ex Camilla broke his heart!

  15. Mairead says:

She comes across as intelligent, mature with a good sense of humour, and a streak of decency.

Miley, are you paying attention dear? – this is the public persona you should be aiming for in 3 years, not Lindsay Lohan who is a walking friggin’ tragedy.

  16. marie says:

I think Taylor is a genuinely sweet, nice young girl. She is still very young and will find her soul mate. What a great role model. She’s got her whole life ahead of her.

  17. elvisgrace says:

I’m impressed with the way she handled, and continues to handle, the Kanye issue. She’s been very composed and mature about it – way more than I think I could have been. In her situation, I would *still* have mascara and eyeliner running down my face, during the live VMA performance. And the Jonas thing was funny – wal-mart has Jonas Bros and Hannah Montana stuff EVERYWHERE.

@db – I think the gay Jonas is Kevin, who’s about to get married, but don’t quote me on that.

  18. Ellie says:

Yeah I always thought Kevin was gay too.

And I like Taylor, but I thought the way she went on and on about Joe Jonas breaking up with her on the phone was annoying. I honestly don’t care.

  19. Lway says:

She has a good sense of humour!
