Angelina Jolie brought Zahara to Variety’s Power of Women dinner

Angelina Jolie & Zahara Jolie-Pitt walked a red carpet together last night! The event was Variety’s Power of Women dinner. The women being honored this year: Lorde, Katy Perry, Amanda Gorman, Rita Moreno and Warner Bros. Television Group Chairman Channing Dungey. Angelina and Zahara were there to honor Amanda Gorman, the poet who performed her original poem “The Hill We Climb” at the inauguration. Not only did Angelina happily pose on the red carpet with Zahara, she was joined by Gorman and it’s basically like Angelina has another daughter now, I don’t make the rules. Here’s part of what Angelina had to say about Gorman on stage at the dinner:

“The young woman of grace, who stepped fearlessly to the podium on inauguration day. Not just the youngest but the strongest voice we could ask for in that moment. The Amanda we see today might seem as if she leapt into our times, fully formed, to summon our better angels. But there was an Amanda we didn’t see… A little girl with a speech impediment. In her own words, ‘a buck-toothed, kinky-haired, speech-garbled 7-year-old.’ Scribbling in her journal, on the school bus and park bench. wrestling with language, puzzling out meaning and rhyme, inventing her own dictionary. All those hours of thought and creation forged the unfaltering woman you see today.”

“…So as well as celebrating your extraordinary achievements, Amanda, we honor 7-year-old you, and every other girl who feels she is an outsider, alone, when she is simply coming into her own. So many girls have their progress in life derailed — by poverty, by the disapproving word, the clenched fist, or the steel of the gun. How many Amanda’s are living in Afghanistan, hiding their journals, waiting to see if they will be allowed to go to school? As if anyone has the right to decide what a woman can or cannot do with her own mind and body…

“[There is] nothing more beautiful, more challenging and more unsettling perhaps than the free mind of the thinking woman. That is surely why so much effort is put into constraining her…. Those who have the power of free speech – the weapon of free speech – must combine to defend those who do not. We need voices like Amanda’s, those lights in the dark. May you burn fiercely, and light the way for others.”

Well now I’m crying on a Friday morning. GAH. Of course Angelina stans Amanda Gorman. I imagine Zahara does as well! And how cute is Zahara? Z got to meet Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry too. I don’t see any photos with Jolie and Lorde though, hm, but there was one pic of Jolie chatting with Rita Moreno (iconic!!). PS… I really don’t like Angelina’s dress but I love why she came out for this event so I’m not going to bitch about the fashion. Plus, Zahara looked chic and beautiful. I wish she would style her mother.

Zahara is beautiful!!! It’s amazing how she and Angelina look very similar in facial features to me and I know they are not genetically related!
    Go, Amanda! Loved the pink

    • rawiya says:

I’ve always thought that Z and Angie looked alike. I’m glad someone else sees it.

      • Mina_Esq says:

Isn’t it fascinating? One of my colleagues adopted her two children as babies from Ethiopia. They both have her facial expressions. I could totally pick them out of a crowd as being her kids even thought she is a white woman from Toronto! It’s probably because we mirror our parents’ movements and expressions as babies and children. I think it’s beautiful. And p.s. Z has style, and I trust that she tries to style Angelina. BUT breaking those sack dress habits must be hard lol

    • Mireille says:

Mother and daughter used to twin a lot when Zahara was younger. They once shared the same purple summer dress, then there were the matching white purses…

  2. Susie Whit says:

I looked at the pictures before reading the article, and when I got to the bottom I thought “who’s that old white dude? Probably some rich banker that was also at the thing..” LOL!!

I love that Zahara (might be) wearing sneakers! so appropriate. For my SIL’s wedding, my daughter was the flower girl and I got her fancy purple sneakers to go with her dress.

  3. Oliphant says:

I like the dress for the whole vintage glamour look angelina has, very old school Hollywood. Gah if I had money I would get whoever her dermatologist is, she’s flawless!

    • SaraR. says:

      Beautiful tribute to Amanda.
Also, I think Angelina’s dress is very pretty – closed in front and then exposed back.

      • Otaku fairy says:

She really does have a way with words. That was so sweet. I agree about the dress too. I kind of like it.

  4. paranormalgirl says:

I love the dress Katy Perry made out of her shower curtain.

Amanda Gorman is an amazing talent. And such a strong voice.

    • Golly Gee says:

Yes. She better hope she doesn’t take flight if she gets caught in an updraft.
Around the World in 80 days with Katy Perry.

  5. Lotta says:

    I’m crying too.
    So brave!
One of my children have a speech impediment so to read this also mean a lot to me because of that reason.

  6. Mireille says:

So many powerhouse badass women in one room — Amanda, Zahara, Rita, and Angie. Angie’s speech about Gorman — wow. Damn. That’s how it’s done.

Outside of film red carpet events, Angelina has always been boring in fashion. When I saw her in person a couple of years ago, she was also wearing a blase brown dress. Like that would downplay her natural beauty. Anyhoo, she once remarked she treated her everyday wear as being “utilitarian” and nothing more.

I LOVE THIS EVENT. Amanda and Angelina are just gorgeous, but OMG ZAHARA!!!! She’s the scene stealer here — at least in IMO. She’s so beautiful and photogenic. And Rita Moreno!!!!! My heart be still with that legend!!!!! Going to Google now to see if I can find photos of her with Angie…

    • MF1 says:

Yeah, I think Angelina’s too beautiful to be bothered by fashion. She doesn’t need clothes to look good, and she obviously has no interest in fashion for art’s sake.

Also, Zahara looks SO chic in those white trousers!

    • Myra says:

I love the speech, as well. A younger me would have cherished it during the darker times.

When you’ve got these amazing women, the fashion should really be secondary, but honestly, they all look amazing .

  7. Esmerelda says:

Zahara is the only celebrity offspring I *want* to see in a nepotism model career. But she’s too smart for that, I guess.

  8. Southern Fried says:

Angelina speaking on Amanda could not have been more beautiful. I wonder how well they know each other.

  9. Forgotuser12 says:

I love her but why does she bring her minor children (not women) to these events? Not trying to be mean but as an Angie fan I’m starving for content and I don’t care for these kids lol. Also, I love the style dress but the lipstick and makeup washes her out. Her makeup during her zooms are so much better bc it’s more natural. Amanda looks stunning!

    • Yup, Me says:

She brings her kids to these events because THAT is how you help grow badass, self possessed people who have a sense of themselves and their power to effect change in the world. My parents did the same with me and it made me very confident and comfortable navigating spaces with “important” people.

Also, Angie doesn’t care what you think. She does what she wants (which is part of why she never had a big PR team around her).

      • Forgotuser12 says:

Ok thanks for the reply. Angie doesn’t have to care what I think but she’s a public figure at a public event and since I’m a fan I commented. Looking forward to Eternals coming out soon!

    • Southern Fried says:

I’d take my children to these types of events also. Incredible learning experiences.

    • Bleh says:

Her minor children?? Her daughter IS a young woman. She’s 17, not in diapers.

    • Green Desert says:

@ Forgotuser12 – I’m sure her goal is to educate her children, to instill knowledge about and compassion for other people. I would 100% take my child to things like this should we get opportunities as he gets older. I hope that if you have children you would do the same.

    • Jaded says:

@Forgotuser12 – “I don’t care for these kids LOL”? These “kids” are who will have the education, experience, smarts and compassion instilled in them via experiences like this to become global citizens who might be able to save this f*cking planet from total annihilation.

      • Forgotuser12 says:

I’m sure they will go on to do great things, but I’m a fan of Angelina, not her children

  10. TeamMeg says:

Love this! Huge fan of Zahara style, too—she’s got such a great fashion sense! Original, classy, age-appropriate, gorgeous. Really started noticing this on the Paris trip, and even her LA street style is terrific. Wonder if she is headed for a career in fashion?!!!

  11. TIFFANY says:

I like Angelina’s dress. She dressed for the occasion, and the occasion wasn’t about her. There was no focused pulled and the stories are about her introducing Amanda, who was getting a honor. That is how it should be.

  12. jferber says:

I like that Angelina brought Zahara, but I’d have liked it better if she brought her other daughters, too. The power of women is an important example for all. Hell, she could have brought her sons, too.

  13. Sue Denim says:

such beautiful women inside and out, just as an aside tho, I’ve met Amanda Gorman and she’s v petite. Z must be really teeny, small but mighty tho.

eta — just checked, Amanda G is 5’5″ so not as petite as I thought.

eta 2 — ok I’m obsessed, Angelina is 5’7″ looks like more than 2 inches taller than Amanda to me.

    eta3 — I’m also v short so this isn’t intended to be height-ist

  14. jferber says:

I like that Angelina brought Zahara, but I’d have liked it better if she brought her other daughters, too. The power of women is an important example for them, too. Hell, she could have brought her sons, too.

    • L4frimaire says:

Her other daughters are still a little bit young for this type of event. Also, maybe Zahara is just a fan of Amanda Gorman and wanted to meet her. It’s must be so inspiring to see a young woman like Gorman, not that much older than her, who has made such a mark.

  15. TaraBest says:

I LOVE Zahara’s outfit. So chic and I think the sneakers are perfect with it. But…why does Katy Perry look like Jennifer Lawrence in that picture? She looks like a different person every time I see her lately.

  16. Serena says:

The speech was beautiful and it honestly made me tear up. Love she decided to bring Zahara along, she has grown up so much!

I don’t mind Angie’s sack dresses anymore, Zahara looked good and Amanda was absolutely gorgeous.

  17. Flying Fish says:

    Zahara and Amanda are beautiful.

  18. MerlinsMom1018 says:

    Z is TINY!!!!!
    And beautiful
I loved listening to Ms. Gorman at the inauguration, just loved it!!!
