Jodie Comer: ‘I don’t even know what my face is doing half the time’

Jodie Comer is one of many cover stars for Elle Magazine’s Women In Hollywood issue. She’s promoting The Last Duel, which is based on a true story. The Last Duel was directed by Ridley Scott and written by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Nicole Holofcener. Damon and Affleck are in the film, and from what I’ve seen, everyone is getting good reviews. It’s mostly seen as a showcase for Jodie’s talent, which is well-documented. She’s a shape-shifter in the vein of Tilda Swinton or Cate Blanchett, and I sometimes forget what she even looks like when she’s out of character. Some highlights from this Elle piece:

She doesn’t have as much control over her face as people think: “I don’t even know what my face is doing half the time. Sometimes I watch things back and I’m mortified because I feel like I’m doing something subtle, but my face is doing the opposite.”

She’s filming the fourth and final season of Killing Eve: “You’ve killed someone and you’re like, ‘Yes!’—you’ve got the crazy eyes, which I think is simply that I don’t blink.”

A new chapter in her career: “I’ve grown so much on this job, especially in regard to finding my own voice. Now as I’m stepping into this new world, I feel more ready and aware, and like all my ideas aren’t complete and utter rubbish. It’s really given me confidence in myself. [When I was 17], I was obsessed with Keira Knightley and I was like, ‘I want to be in period films. I want to be in costume dramas.’ Then I had this moment on set last year when I thought, I’m here.”

Ben Affleck on Jodie’s performance in The Last Duel: “The whole movie hinged on Jodie’s ability to play her part in a way that was genuine, and also true to the perspective that the other characters had. That dance was so delicate, the line so fine, and the fact that she made it look so effortless is the most impressive feat of acting I’ve seen in a long, long time….I’m just proud to be a footnote in the Wikipedia page of her career.”

Matt Damon on what she was like as a coworker: “A great actor is like that. She’d say, ‘I don’t feel like I should say this’ and we’d make the change. We took every one of her notes. As a writer, the gratitude you have for an actor who makes your stuff that much better is this indescribable, wonderful feeling. I can’t be hyperbolic enough in talking about Jodie. She’s truly incredible. Directors are going to be beating down her door because she’s a generational talent.”

[From Elle]

I do think Comer is probably a generational talent, much like (I’ll say again) Cate Blanchett. Someone who can do any accent, someone who can look radically different from role to role, someone who can act the pants off of any role. She’s good at “not being a celebrity” too – she’s not Hollywood, and we don’t know much of anything about her private life. When she’s not working, she’s at her parents’ house and reading, basically. Anyway, I am looking forward to seeing The Last Duel.

Jodie was amazing in the Last Duel. It was a very well done movie. And I can’t wait for Killing Eve!! I will definitely support her in any project, she’s my new girl crush 🙂

I haven’t seen her in anything apart from Killing Eve and I would be terrified to meet her because she is so good acting as a trigger happy psychopathic killer as Villanelle. I am excited for her to get more roles and see where she goes. She will probably be one of the greats like Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton etc.

  4. Nievie says:

I loved her in the TV drama ‘Help’ – set during March 2020 – first peak of Covid-19 here in the UK. Super intense and powerful – really recommend watching if you haven’t already

  5. Boxy Lady says:

The Last Duel is excellent. I highly recommend it.

  6. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

I’ll definitely see this despite Ben and Matt. I love her. I just saw her in Fringe. She’s the one who delivered the man baby? Loraine with one ‘r.’ She has a long career in front of her.

  7. Tessa says:

Her accent work is pretty bad, actually. I was far more impressed with Diane Kruger in that department.

Agree on her accent work, but I still love her.

And it’s crazy to me how different she looks when she’s smiling. I almost don’t recognize her!

  8. Southern Fried says:

Really great post about her and her versatility, thanks. I find her work fascinating.

I like Jodie Comer a lot, really enjoy her in Killing Eve seasons 1 and 2, haven’t seen season 3 yet. I just wish there were early-career shoot to stardom roll-outs like this women of color. Watching Jodie and Anya-Taylor Joy I’m like “awesome, great” but there’s a part of me (a Black woman) who consciously/sub-consciously withholds my interest because I’m tired of waiting until women of color are in their 30s (Gemma Chan) and 40s/50s (Viola Davis, Regina King) before they get fangirled over. I wish the industry could be honest: these (Jodie, Anya, like Jennifer Lawrence and Kristen Stewart before them) are the most talented white actresses, rather than these are the most talented actresses. It’s impossible for them to be the most talented actresses in such a uneven playing field.

    • E says:

so much thissss!!! Even when they have a breakout role in a movie, its their white co-stars that get all the meaty roles afterward. Like Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley in Bend it Like Beckham. Or Zendaya and Keke Palmer, both young and super talented, but they have to build huge platforms on their own before they can even get into audition rooms for features, and they still don’t get the same offers as white up and coming actresses.

    • Rebecca Nicole Reeves says:

Ana Taylor Joy is Latina, btw

      • Seán says:

Anya is mostly white. Born in Miami to an Argentine father of English and Scottish descent and a Zambian born mother of English and Spanish descent. She grew up in Argentina with Spanish as her first language before moving to the UK. She seems to be mostly of European descent and not a mixture of Spanish and indigenous Americans that Latinos/Latinas are usually classified by.

I loved her in “The White Princess. “

  12. A.Key says:

She was wonderful in the Last Duel, great film!

  13. Bellaluna McKenzie says:

I love her too. Her works on The Spanish Princess and Killing Eve impressed me.

Wasn’t she also the protagonist of Free Guy alongside Ryan Reynolds, albeit as a brunette (in that universe’s game)? If so, I knew she looked familiar somehow.

  14. Ania says:

She’s a truly phenomenal actress! The way she can move her face and do a range of accents is amazing.
