Does anyone believe that Prince Andrew will be able to ‘come back to royal life’?

One of the interesting things I noticed from “royal commentators” is that, in the wake of Prince Andrew’s settlement with Virginia Giuffre, one of the immediate thoughts was “will Andrew be able to come back?” Not to give the commentators too much credit, but I don’t think they’re the ones advocating for Andrew’s grand return to public life. If anything, the commentators are trying to get ahead of what they see as an inevitable effort FROM THE PALACE to somehow rehabilitate Andrew’s image and “bring him back into the fold.” It was definitely curious to see how many commentators immediately went from “well, this is good news for the Jubbly” to “Andrew is never going to come back, EVER.” The media is telling the palace: don’t even try it, it won’t wash. From the Daily Mail:

Prince Charles has been done for a while: One royal source told MailOnline: ‘I’m sure that Charles has had enough of the situation. Charles would have said to Andrew that he needed to get this sorted out as soon as possible and before the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations begin. Charles did not want this hanging over the Royal Family this year.’

Ordered by mummy: A former Royal protection officer told the Sun his dramatic U-turn was likely ordered by his mother. ‘This wasn’t his decision, this was the Queen’s,’ said Paul Page. He added that Andrew’s story was ‘full of holes’ and the Duke ‘would have been slaughtered’ in his deposition.

Penny Junor chimes in: Royal author Penny Junor said the settlement is likely to come as a ‘huge relief’ to the rest of the Royal Family because a trial ‘could have been very, very nasty’ and ‘humiliating’. She added: ‘It could have really taken the shine off the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee year.’ Ms Junor also said there had been a ‘complete change of tone’ on Andrew’s words on his links to Epstein, adding: ‘At last, he’s expressing some regret and some empathy for those girls.’ Ms Junor said the Duke’s notorious BBC Newsnight interview in 2019 had been ‘all about him’ and ‘He’s got it right now, it took him a long time to get there but I think he’s got it right.’ Asked if there is a way back to public royal life for Andrew, Ms Junor said: ‘I think it’s very, very unlikely.’

Richard Fitzwilliams chimes in: He questioned why such a payment was agreed if he was so sure of his innocence. He told the Sun: ‘Essentially has he admitted that he has done any wrong at all? No. Regretting his association with Epstein doesn’t count. He claimed innocence, but he has settled and many would regard this as an admission of guilt. If he was innocent then why did he pay?’

More from Fitzwilliams: ‘The relief at the Palace will be almost tangible now the threat of further public humiliation of Andrew in this civil case has been lifted after this settlement was announced. He has simultaneously, over two and a quarter years, managed to become a serious embarrassment, a national joke and a symbol of entitlement of the worst sort. If it had ever got to court, his humiliation would have been an international cause celebre. The questioning he was shortly facing as part of the legal process by Virginia Roberts Giuffre’s legal team, would have been devastating too. Although it would not have overshadowed the actual Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June, this scandal would have cast a cloud over this unique royal year. That will now not occur and he has continued to deny the charges against him, but the public will not forget the Newsnight interview, the unexplained photograph and his disastrous friendships with Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. There is therefore no future royal role, other than possibly helping to manage the royal estates, at any time in the future for him.’

Robert Jobson: ‘The fact that there’s been a settlement doesn’t necessarily mean that [Andrew’s] reputation is rebuilt.

Ingrid Seward: ‘The best thing he can do is disappear for a year. He must keep a very low profile, which I am sure Prince Charles will insist upon.’

[From The Daily Mail]

I can guarantee you that all of these people are responding to what they’re hearing from their “palace sources” and “royal sources,” which is that Andrew somehow believes that he can play some part in this fakakta Jubbly and make everyone forget how much he lied, victim-blamed and smeared a victim of human trafficking only to take millions of pounds from mummy to pay off his victim. Andrew believes he can come back. The Queen believes he can come back. Charles wants to send Andrew to Siberia. The press wants to ignore Andrew and focus on the Sussexes. This newscycle will be done in a few days.

Andrew might try, but I think Charles will freeze him out and leak to the press about him. Andrew is too dumb to rehab his own image.

  2. Brit says:

Believe me, they’ll try. Remember how he made a statement during Phillips memorial that was broadcasted and people were upset. The Royal family and media need to stop hyper focusing on the Sussexes because it’s not working anymore. If anything, using Harry and Meghan is only making things worse because people can see the difference in treatment. Harry and Meghan are trending right now because everyone can see how been they’ve treated and hounded. The days of using them for a distraction is reaching it peak and it’s become so predictable to the point that now people expect it.

You don’t know me, we’ve never met, and I’ve publicly accused you of committing criminal atrocities against me, so would you please give me 12 million for no reason?

      I didn’t think so.

  3. OriginalLaLa says:

This family is rotten to the core, the whole royal system is rotten – It’s so telling that the biggest thing they can focus on is the frigging Jubbly and not the fact that Andrew is a freaking r*pist, and certainly not his victim(s).

    • damejude says:

Heaven forbid they just do what’s the right thing to do on behalf of the victim.

      Just so disgusting.

  4. Murphy says:

The only person on the planet who believes that is Sarah Ferguson.
    And maybe Andrew himself.

  5. Truthiness says:

    Oh, hell no!

  6. Jane says:

It depends on the Queen and how much longer she lasts. If she recovers from her unspecified health problems and starts doing events again, Andrew will be her escort and she will smooth the way for him to appear in public with her and the family over the next few years despite everyone’s objections. If she doesn’t, and Charles takes the reigns, either as regent or King, Andrew’s toast and will never be seen publicly in an official capacity again. Charles won’t want his relatively brief reign overshadowed by anyone, not William or Harry or their wives, and definitely not his loathed brother.

  7. Basi says:

I wouldn’t put it past these out of touch fools to bring him back into the mix. (But maybe they’ll surprise me.)
I used to have so much love for the British Royal family until a few years into the Cambridge marriage. It finally hit me that despite such a platform and privilege…they were NOT going to use it for good. The treatment of Meghan sealed the deal.

  8. Snuffles says:

The moment Mummy dies, Charles is going to effectively exile Andrew. He will be shuttered away with an allowance.

    • Becks1 says:

This is what I think and I honestly think it might have happened whether or not Andrew settled with Virginia etc. Charles loathes Andrew and doesn’t want him involved in his reign and this gives him an “easy out,” so to speak.

  9. Lizzie Bathory says:

I don’t usually give the DM clicks, but I read several pieces last night about Andrew & they were all extremely critical of him & clear that he can’t return to public life, which I found interesting. It feels like they were free to discuss his arrogance & bad judgement both because he wound up settling & also (I suspect) because they were cleared by Clarence House to shut down any suggestion that he’d further distract from the Jubbly.

I’m curious about what Charles plans to do with Andrew. What does one do with a prince who can’t be seen by the public but is nonetheless supported by their funds?

    • The Recluse says:

Since the Scots don’t want him up in Balmoral, perhaps Andrew can be exiled to the Isle of Wight? Given the Napoleon treatment? I hear that the Tower of London used to serve that purpose too, Chuckie.

  10. HandforthParish says:

I think he will try as his delusion levels are off the scale (see the Panorama interview, which he actually thought went well, much to the interviewer’s dismay).

He won’t come back though. He is universally loathed in the UK, and only the Queen would ever advocate for him- and even she probably wouldn’t, if we are to believe her sense of duty.

  11. Talia says:

I saw the headline and my first thought was ‘yeah, Andrew’. Other than that, I don’t think anyone except possibly the Queen thinks this is possible.

  12. Justplainme says:

Andrew and Fergie believe it. I’m convinced she is plotting a remarriage for better PR.

  13. Emily says:

Let’s stop pretending that bring allowed to live a quiet life in a publicly-funded mansion is an appropriate punishment for a pedo rapist. The Keens would kill for that arrangement!

  14. Amy Bee says:

I’d say he could never come back to royal life but then again Camilla got to marry Charles and is going to be declared Queen Consort, so never say never. Yes, there is relief among members of the Royal Family and at the Palace that this is over but what they really want now is Harry to come over for the Jubbly so that they can pretend that there has been a reconciliation and that Harry has been forgiven by the Royal Family.

  15. Hannah says:

Andrew, the dumb idiot, that he is, is certainly going to try. Quite literally everyone in either my family, friend or work circle (I live just outside London in Richmond and work in central London) will simply not stand for it. Even those who have 0% interest in the RF are insistent that he never show his face in public or at Windsor (Castle) ever again. My only *sadness* in all of this is where was all this *moral outrage* when it was our Harry and Meg 😔☹️😢

  16. Lynne says:

He’s done. I bet he gets a plot of land and a tractor in some remote area. Will be living off the grid.
No way he comes back, everyone can see through this. He is toxic.

    • The Recluse says:

Without servants to arrange his teddies or for him to yell at? That would be punishment for him.

  17. Cerys says:

I’m sure he will creep back into family events but not take on public duties. He can have a lovely life playing golf, holidaying at various royal properties etc and all at taxpayers expense. Makes me sick

  18. RoSco says:

What kind of come back is he looking for? He seems to be living the Cambridge dream: no Royal work and endless financial support.

  19. Robert Phillips says:

Remember when Princess Di died. All the rumors about how the Royal family had it done. I wonder if any of that was true and if Charles is considering any of that?

  20. jferber says:

Emily and RosCo, absolutely right. I am so tired of seeing his open-mouthed, cretinous face. It’s no punishment for him, but it would be a relief for the rest of us never to see him again.

  21. Deeanna says:

He and Sarah could be sent off someplace on an all expenses paid extended vacation to some far-flung British Commonwealth associated place. The Falklands? Christmas Island? There are lots of them out there.
