Maggie Gyllenhaal wore Gucci to pick up several Independent Spirit Awards

The Independent Spirit Awards were held on Sunday in a tent in Santa Monica. Apparently, the weather didn’t completely agree – most women were dressed for a cocktail party at the beach, and many of them complained about how cold it was in the tent. The big winner of this year’s Spirit Awards? Maggie Gyllenhaal and The Lost Daughter. Maggie won for her adapted screenplay, for Best Director and the film won Best Picture. Maggie attended the awards in this great Gucci look and she seemed very pleased with all of the wins. You can see the rest of the winners here – Simon Rex won best Actor for Red Rocket, Troy Kotsur won for CODA, Taylour Paige won Best Actress, and Ruth Negga won for Supporting Actress (for Passing).

Here’s Taylour Paige’s look. She was fantastic in Zola and this is well-deserved.

Taika Waititi wore Dzojchen. He was on stage a lot as a producer for Reservation Dogs, which won a Spirit Award. Rita Ora was not with him.

Marlee Matlin wore this shiny pink Armani Prive suit, which looks like pajamas.

Dianna Agron wore Prada – she was there as part of the cast of Shiva Baby, which won a Spirit Award!

I think Maggie’s look is a lot better from the side, lol, then from the front. I like Marlee Matlin’s shiny pink look for this event.

I don’t know who Dianna Agron is lol but I really like that two piece outfit.

I agree it’s better from the side, the big boxy shoulders are distracting.
I only know Dianna from Glee. She’s very pretty, but something about that dress has a high school prom vibe to it.

I like Maggie’s shoes. Less said about the rest of her look, the better.

I don’t love Maggie’s look here but I love the movie and am happy for her win. I love the Independent Spirit awards so much and the work it highlights. I wish Simon Rex had received an Oscar nod.

Taika looks amazing. It’s an impressive move to pull off this colour, but he does it.

I don’t love Maggie’s outfit, but The Lost Daughter is (from what I’ve seen so far) the only award season nominee that really left an impression on me. I still think about it, so I’m glad her work is being recognized.

I started it but couldn’t get into it. I think I got about 45 minutes in. Should I give it another go?

      • Case says:

I would, Becks! I really loved it. I will say it’s a bit more “academic” than a lot of Netflix movies, for lack of a better word (lots of symbolism and things to analyze, lol), but the way the tension rises throughout the movie is really well done and I found the story and acting compelling. It’s definitely a slow burn though!

Asking for a friend, did Maggie Gyllenhaal get a pass for (at the very least) turning a blind eye to her brother’s pattern of sexual harrassment of young PA’s in his workplaces? Seems pretty out of line with her public statements on womens’ rights…

    • North of Boston says:

No, but I’d rather we hold *the actual guy who did the actual bad thing* accountable before we go looking for women adjacent to him to hold accountable for how they did/didn’t publicly respond to the bad thing the guy did.

      • Noo says:

Maggie was in a position of power as producer on The Deuce and had the opportunity to stand with Busy Phillips and the students who told their stories of abuse by James Franco. She conducted an “investigation” and kept him on the show. He of course later admitted wrongdoing and settled with the victims. But she kept her show running.

Pretty strong words in this article from Maggie about how abusers should be held to account: https://www.thecut.com/2018/10/maggie-gyllenhaal-james-franco-sexual-misconduct-the-deuce.html

Obvs not disagreeing that the abusers need to be held accountable first. But Maggie has a lot to say about misogyny and the feminine experience and has made a career off it. Based on her actions so far, do I want her as my spokesperson? Nope!

Maggie’s look would’ve had her walking sideways the whole evening.

  8. AnneL says:

The structure of Maggie’s jacket is downright Elizabethan. I like the material, though.

So glad Kotsur won for “CODA.” We really enjoyed that movie and he was soooo good in it.

  9. Coco says:

Maggie’s outfit is just hideous. It seems like Gucci so leftover fabric together and three some 80s extra thick shorter pads in there with it and called it an outfit. Both Gucci and her stylist did Maggie wrong.

A big ugh and a hearty WTF on the Gucci getup. Loved TLD though. Brilliant.
