Queen Elizabeth will skip the Commonwealth Games in July-August

As far as anyone knows, Queen Elizabeth has been back at Windsor Castle following the Jubbly extravaganza last weekend. She canceled most of her Jubbly appearances and her aides hyped her “surprise” appearance on the balcony on Sunday, but again… she wasn’t around much. I would imagine that she will travel to Balmoral soon though – usually she waits until late June to travel to Scotland for her summers “off,” but I doubt anything is keeping her in Windsor. It’s not like she will suddenly make any more surprise appearances in London. And whenever she does go to Balmoral, she won’t leave for the entire summer. She’s canceled her appearance at the Commonwealth Games:

The Queen has been forced to pull out of the entire Commonwealth Games due to health issues, sources have claimed. Her Royal Highness, 96, will be reportedly be replaced by members of her family despite only missing a handful of events over the last seven decades.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games is being held in Birmingham between July 28 and August 8. More than 6,600 athletes and team officials from 70 nations and territories will gather to contest 18 sports and seven para-sports. Senior figures from the sporting competition have claimed The Prince of Wales will step up to stand in for his mother, reports The Daily Mail. And the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the Earl and Countess of Wessex and Princess Anne will also attend on several days.

When the Commonwealth Games kicks off next month she will be on summer break in Scotland – and would have to travel to Birmingham to attend. It’s thought the journey would be too taxing for her with her mobility problems.

[From The Sun]

I love how everyone calls it “summer break” like she’s in school or whatever. Even when the Queen was younger and she did tons of events, she still spent three months in Scotland every summer, doing next to nothing. It’s more than a break, a holiday or a vacation. Anyway, I imagine once she does travel to Balmoral, it will be expected that all of the royals come up for a visit. It could be her last Balmoral summer. As for the Commonwealth Games… it will be curious to see the royal turnout, honestly. I bet Buttons & Baldemort don’t show up. They like to have “summers off” too.

It would have been much classier to have her pass on power in a ceremony to her son than this waiting for her to die and speculating on it.

    • MF says:

Agree. By not abdicating and also doing no service at the same time, she’s just demonstrating how useless and unnecessary the monarchy is.

  2. HeatherC says:

She is really preparing to shuffle off this mortal coil if she’s cancelling appearances a month and a half ahead of time for “health issues.” That’s my take away. Probably Sophiesta will make an appearance.

    • The Hench says:

Or maybe she looked at how the last few Royal interactions with the Commonwealth have gone this year and thought “Nope. Hard swerve. Staying well away from that potential messiness. I’ll have mobility issues come end of July.”

      • BeanieBean says:

That’s my thinking. Seems like the Commonwealth Games would provide a perfect opportunity for making a statement–several statements. The article still has a lot of those weasel-words, though. ‘Sources have claimed’, ‘thought to’, etc. And which is it, ill health or mobility issues? They’re not necessarily the same thing. I think it’s more as others have suggested previously, she’s only going to do just exactly what she wants to do & no more. Balmoral for the summer, it is.

  3. Yeo says:

Agreed, let’s hear more about other celebs!!

  4. Blithe says:

To me, it seems like the default for a nonagenarian with health issues should be that they’ll do what they can — and determine what this means at the last minute. Surely she can be ably represented by other family members at the many activities that need to be planned in advance.

Related shift: Yes, I’m hoping for a Stealth Sussex visit to Balmoral — that’s only publicized after the fact.

    • Pam says:

      Oh, that would be awesome!

    • BeanieBean says:

Right. Why on earth plan to have her doing everything as per usual, she’s 96! Plan on having all the heirs & spares attend whatever, with TQ on standby–if and only if she feels like it.

I live in Birmingham near where the games are going to be held and I am dreadddinnggg the extra keenness. Traffic is going to be a b*tch

  6. C says:

We’ll see if this has even remotely the same energy from the royals as the Sussexes had during Invictus…

  7. Eurydice says:

I like “despite only missing a handful of events over the last seven decades.” Dude, look at what you wrote – seven decades! How long did you think she’d keep it up?

I thought W&K were going off for summer holiday after Will’s Glorious 40th – don’t tell me they’ll have to work.

Still, best of luck to all the athletes.

Everytime I see the balcony re-do pics I laugh. It was so obviously staged to cute Kate out. William could have stood behind George, closer to the Queen, and then kate could have stood behind charlotte. But no, William knew exactly what he was doing standing there, lol.

    • Merricat says:

      Lol, +1

    • Seraphina says:

I’m surprised she didn’t try to fill that large gap next to the queen – between current Queen and FFFK. Kate should take note – Ma Middleton too- at how easy they can so easily be cut out of the picture – pun intended.

  9. Jay says:

Sure, the Keens like their summers off, but they also love to show up with VIPs in the stands and be lauded for a few hours of sitting and clapping. They were never as popular as during the 2012 Olympics, cheering and even ( gasp!) half- embracing.
They might not appear together for many events, but I’d bet money on them showing up after the criticisms they’ve received so far this year. I’ll bet we see the Tindalls, too – they seem to have aligned themselves with the Cambridges and like the sporty events. Will wants to show he has allies, too. Plus, he won’t get booed like in Liverpool, lol.

    • JaneBee says:

      @Jay All good points.

I do wonder what it would now take for William to agree to a reenactment of their 2012 Olympic embrace? 😂 Heather and Jessica from Go Fug Yourself were obsessed with that image and reposted it ad nauseam back in the day.

  10. Prairiegirl says:

    I agree.

  11. windyriver says:

Actually, I think the next regularly scheduled event is Holyrood Week in Edinburgh, at the end of June. I wonder what she’ll do about that. IIRC, during that time she does make day trips around the area, and there’s a big garden party at the palace. That might be a bit much, especially since she skipped the BP garden parties this year. On the other hand, she’s based in the same place for the week, and Holyrood is right in the city, so people could come to visit her. Other family members often are there working with her. And it’s not far to Balmoral from there. Maybe it’s still a possibility since it hasn’t been commented on so far. And since Scotland’s future is such a concern, TPTB may be trying to make that trip happen.

  12. Louise177 says:

I don’t know what’s involved with transferring power but I would think it would take a lot of planning. It’s one thing when Philip retired it’s different for the reining monarch. I think now it’s in serious consideration. She would cancel a few events last year but this year almost everything has been.

    • Roslyn says:

These people plan events decades in advance. Somewhere there is a large folder containing detailed plans for all the steps involved in an abdication, establishing a regency, and other options.

  13. Amy Bee says:

William and Kate will make an appearance in Birmingham before they go on summer break. They need to be out there so the press can talk about Harry and Meghan missing out on royal duties at the games like what they did with COP26. In no other country the Head of State could take 3 months off without there being a public outrage.

  14. Pam says:

You know what they OUGHT to do? Move heaven and earth to get the Sussexes to attend the games to impart the same magic as they did for the Invictus Games—right when the Cambridges go off on their holiday. The headlines would just write themselves!

    • Lucky Charm says:

I was thinking something along the same lines. First, they make a stealth trip to visit the Queen at Balmoral for a day or two, then make a surprise visit to host the Commonwealth Games for a couple days and then go home, all while the Cambridges are on summer vacation lol!

  15. SarahCS says:

Ok, first, at her age she should do whatever she likes (and let Chuck get on with ‘ruling’).

BUT, I love that travel from Balmoral to Birmingham would be ‘too taxing’ for her when she literally just popped up there for FOUR DAYS ahead of the jubbly.

    • windyriver says:

Travel distance question aside, as you point out! the logistics of getting her from place to place at an event like this, at this point in her life and with her health situation, are probably just not worth it. It’s a good sized competition, involves 6000 athletes, so 5 or 6 times the size of IG. Lots of crowds and traffic. What’s the point of her showing up if she’s not going to be able to do much. Enough younger (relatively) people in that family available to handle it and they’d probably enjoy it more.

    • JaneBee says:

@Sarahcs Legally, she can’t just informally leave the ‘ruling’ bit to Charles… An NYT article on the Jubilee touched on this and described the current situation as “constitutionally tricky”, and it is.

  16. Bisynaptic says:

Did The Sun just call the Queen “Her Royal Highness“? Standards have really slipped.

  17. Likeyoucare says:

I remember when the commonwealth games was held in my country in asia.
Elizabeth came for the closing ceremony and we dont care about her.
We just happy for our teams.
The royals are not the main events. The athletes are.
No need to worry about lili senior cause no one care.
