Ben Platt & Noah Galvin, who both played the lead in Dear Evan Hansen, got engaged

Who could use a sweet, old-fashioned Broadway love story this morning? Well, I have one for you. Evan Hansen is engaged… to Evan Hansen! Ben Platt asked his boyfriend Noah Galvin to marry him. So what’s the Dear Evan Hansen connection? Ben originated the role on Broadway (and then unfortunately reprised it for the film version). When Ben stepped down in 2017, Noah replaced him as Evan. And instead of letting petty rivalry get in the way, Ben and Noah became close. In 2020, they decided to give love a shot. Last Friday, they decided to give forever a shot.

Ben Platt and Noah Galvin are making it for forever.

The actors, who have both played the lead in Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway, are engaged, they announced on Instagram Friday.

Sharing photos from the proposal and highlighting the ring, Platt, 29, wrote in the caption, “he agreed to hang out forever.” On his page, Galvin, 28, wrote, “I said yeehaw and then cried for like 7 hours.”

After Platt stepped down from the titular role in the Tony-winning musical, Galvin was announced as his replacement in November 2017. From there, the two developed a close friendship, which eventually blossomed into a romance a few years later.

The couple confirmed their relationship status in May 2020, when Galvin appeared on an episode of the Little Known Facts with Ilana Levine podcast.

“We were friends for five years and right before the pandemic, we finally decided to really give it a shot. We kind of skated around it for a long time,” Platt later told Kelly Clarkson of how their relationship developed over the years.

Platt, who currently stars in the movie The People We Hate at the Wedding on Prime Video, told Out magazine in 2021 that he’d found “a partner that I really love.” He said Galvin “has a really unique ability to help me to … be present where I am and to make the life that’s happening day to day too wonderful to not want to be on the ground for it.”

“To help me to … be present where I am and to make the life that’s happening day to day too wonderful to not want to be on the ground for it,” we should all be so lucky to have someone describe us like this. Man, can you imagine how fun this wedding is going to be? It’ll be wall to wall singing. More importantly, if the announcement is anything to go off of, it will be filled with joy and that’s what a wedding should be.

Now, for the shallow part – the ring Ben proposed with is gorgeous. I love the sleek design. I made the unfortunate choice of clicking on the designer’s IG page and OMG did my Christmas list get a lot longer. Noah could put a simple wedding band with it or keep it as a single ring. It’s a flexible choice, very sophisticated. Ben and Noah make a lovely couple and they are clearly thrilled to be walking down this road together. Congratulations and many happy years together.

I watched Ben’s latest project, The People We Hate at the Wedding and kind of liked it. It was more maudlin than I expected. Not that that’s bad, but it felt shunted in for effect in places. But the cast carried the film. They have a great chemistry and at the end, I was rooting for all of them. Maybe the sequel can be a reenactment of Ben and Noah’s wedding.

    Awwww, yay for love!

Not a massive fan of the ring but I rarely like engagement rings. That’s a me problem I guess.

Did anyone else watch The People We Hate at The Wedding? I’d read it was mean-spirited, forced, and un-funny. Kristen Bell was exhausting in the trailer, but I really do love Ted from Schitt’s Creek. Thoughts?

    • Emmi says:

No but the trailer looks bad so how can the movie be good? It seems like one of those movies where everyone is awful but I’m supposed to root for them anyway. I don’t like Kristen Bell’s on-screen presence and if Alison Janney doesn’t come off well, it’s time for me to move on to the next one.

It has some funny parts, but I spent the entire movie puzzled about why these very successful, rich, relevant people are doing this low budget movie on Amazon Prime in the first place. (Allison Janney won an Oscar FOUR years ago! Kristen Bell has PILES of mouse money! Ben Platt can do whatever he wants on Broadway! These people combine for a recent EGOT!)

As far as the movie itself, the characters are terrible people who would have been kicked out of any IRL situation for being disrespectful a-holes. Their sister/the bride isn’t a great actress, and they have zero chemistry together, but in fairness to her, SHE’S exactly where she should be in this streaming, holiday movie. Everyone else is just punching waaaay below their weight class.

I wouldn’t watch it again, but a few of my girlfriends seemed to enjoyed it.

This was a really tough watch. I agree that “mean-spirited, forced and unfunny” about covers it. The scene where Ted from Schitt’s Creek tells Kristen Bell’s character exactly what her problems are (without being cruel) is like the only redeeming moment from the drudgery.

      • HelloDannie says:

Agree that it was mean-spirited, unfunny and forced. Unfortunately I didn’t root for anyone onscreen. Only Allison Janney’s character made it somewhat worthwhile.

Anyway, congrats to Ben & Noah! 🎉

  8. ME says:

Not that it matters, but I honestly had no idea Ben is gay. I had no idea he was dating Noah. They are such a cute couple and I am so happy for them !

Awww what an adorable story! They should make a musical about it.

Congratulations! I wish you nothing but happiness.

  14. sunny says:

They are a very sweet couple and this is nice holiday news!

Along a similar vein, aren’t two more actors who each played Evan Hansen on Broadway dating? I remember reading that there was more than once Evan Hansen couple.

Omg the feel good story we needed!!! I don’t know anything about these two, but I am ROOTING FOR THEM! Happy to see some love in the world.

I needed a sweet story like this as a palate cleanser after reading all the bile of the Windsor stories. Cute couple! And I love that ring!
