Ellen DeGeneres: Portia de Rossi will be with me ’til death

ellen-degeneres-oprah-december-01

Elle DeGeneres has finally gotten a magazine cover! Except that she’s on the cover of magazines all the time… so why is this one a big deal? Because Ellen’s prayers have been answered – after months and months of pleading, begging, joking and bribing, Ellen is sharing the December O Magazine cover with Oprah herself. This is only the second time in the history of O Magazine that Oprah has shared the cover – the first time, it was with First Lady Michelle Obama. Apparently, there are several variations on the cover image – one has Ellen sitting on a huge wrapped present, one has Oprah on the gift. Another has Oprah wrapping Ellen up in Christmas lights.

When asked about her decision to finally let Ellen on the cover, Oprah says: “Ellen DeGeneres is a woman who can make things happen. When she decided she wanted to be on the cover of O, she pulled out all the stops. It worked – for only the second time in O history, I’m sharing the cover with a woman I adore. When Ellen arrived at the photo shoot for our cover, I didn’t have to ask her how she was doing: it showed on her face. She radiated the kind of peace and satisfaction that comes only when you’re living at your highest potential.” In the interview (excerpt from Us Weekly), Ellen talks about how she knew her wife Portia de Rossi was “the one”.

Ellen DeGeneres says she’s found the One.

In the December issue of O: The Oprah Magazine, DeGeneres, 51, tells Oprah Winfrey that she and Portia de Rossi “are perfect for each other.”

The comedian, talk show host and American Idol judge (come this January) opens up to Winfrey about actress de Rossi, 36, with whom she’s been in a relationship since 2004. “She is so beautiful and so smart and so funny,” DeGeneres gushes.

“I have that sense of ‘I’m done now.’ I’m settled,” she says. “I know that part of my life is taken care of. I’ve got love. I’ve got someone who will be with me till the day I die.”

The couple married on Aug. 16, 2008 in a small ceremony in their home; because their wedding took place before the November 2008 passage of Proposition 8 (banning gay marriage in California), a Supreme Court judgment upheld the legality of their union.

DeGeneres also talked to Winfrey about her upcoming gig alongside Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi as an American Idol judge — replacing Paula Abdul, who left the show after its eight season.

“They came to me, and it was a total surprise,” she explains. “I like to try new things because I get bored so easily. And I like the show, so I thought it was a great idea.”

The ninth season of American Idol premieres in January 2010.

[From Us Weekly]

I do love Ellen, and I’m so happy that her wildest dream came true. Even though I think the whole “I wanna be on the cover of O Magazine” thing was mostly a comedy bit, a great running gag for her show, I do think that Ellen and Oprah probably do love and respect each other. Unlike someone like Tyra Banks, who doesn’t always give Oprah her props for being there first, Ellen seems to know that to take Oprah’s media maven mantle, you first have to worship at the Church of Oprah and show respect. Maybe I’m reading too much into it. Very possible.

One more thing – I do worry about Ellen and Portia. There is a significant age gap between them, and I sometimes worry that Portia wants to have babies while Ellen wants her life the way it is, with a wife and dogs and no kids. Anyway… it’s just something I worry about with them, it could be nothing.

Here’s Ellen sharing the cover of O with Oprah and out on a date with Portia on October 16th. Images thanks to Fame Pictures .

I have such a crush on those two. If they had ended up with anyone else I would have been sad, but together they are perfect. 🙂

  2. errr says:

    that sounds kinda creepy

  3. pickelhaube says:

I would have thought it sounded creepy as well, but now I understand because I have that type of relationship with my husband. So maybe it’s something you have to experience to understand? Either way, I’m happy for them both because it’s nice to see people committed to each other and in it for the long haul. I do hope it works out though…things happen, but I’d bet on them sticking it out. They seem good for each other 🙂

  4. Charity is Chic says:

Why do people always feel the need to make statements like that? It’s like they’re asking, no begging, to break up. No one needs to justify their love or commitment to another person so publicly or definitely.

If they feel that need then something in the relationship is already flawed. Love Ellen, and Portia, but please, stop making ridiculous comments like that. You’ll only seem foolish when you break up in a few years.

  5. Tazina says:

Rosie used to say similar things about Keli and look where they are now. You just can’t predict something like that with total certainty. But it is better to be optimistic and it certainly could turn out to be forever.

  6. Emily says:

Is Oprah’s face normally twice the size of other people’s? That’s really freaking me out. Moving on, I love Ellen and Portia together, they’re really cute.

  7. BitterBetty says:

    LOL @ errr

  8. Judy says:

It’s hard for me to wrap myself around the idea of two women together, but these two seem perfect for each other…and I do love Ellen. She is so real, humble, sweet, generous, and funny…who couldn’t like Ellen! So happy she has found peace and love.

  9. swtjolee says:

I can still remember the moment of some award show that they first saw each other and wow!! It was electric.. I thought back then.. (they were both w/ other people ) these two are meant to be…

  10. Rosalee says:

Happiness, well done and I hope they do live happily ever after and for some unforeseeable reason they don’t..I know the perfect woman for Ellen..

  11. ramona putz says:

Oh please, the only glow Portia has in her eyes are for the big bucks & perks that came with Degeneres.
Ellen is your typical dumb dyke.
Guaranteed, this union will be headed for splitsville in the not- so- distant future & Portia will be laughing all the way to the bank.

  12. CB Rawks says:

    Love them.

  13. la chica says:

agree with Charity is Chic. i think it’s misguided to make these kinds of public declarations of permanence. what makes it worse is that Ellen sounds like this in every damn relationship — each woman is THE ONE.

the fact that she is married to her current is no guarantee of anything. to me Ellen comes across as desperate, needy and clingy. which is a sure fire way of turning off your partner. or attracting exploitation. Anne Heche anyone?

  14. Wif says:

@Charity is Chic, I saw the interview and the reason that the statement was made is because Oprah was asking them about why it’s important to be married as a gay couple. It wasn’t out of nowhere. Within the context of the interview it was a natural and lovely thing to say.

  15. pickelhaube says:

    ramona putz-

LOL maybe gay people should rethink the whole marriage thing, especially if they have to pay alimony! There’s always a downside, so think long and hard before you agitate for marriage, gays!

I do support civil unions for gays though…hell, call all marriages gay or straight “civil unions”, and if people want a religious ceremony after the fact, do it. Problem solved, and it’s so easy! Elect me for President already!

  16. fizXgirl314 says:

wait, where have I heard this before?? oh… right…

  17. Rio says:

Ellen’s 51?! Really?! DAMN, may we all look that good (and I have seen her in real life, sans filters and Photoshop…she DOES look that good.)
I’m rooting for this couple. They’re both adorable, and that’s reason enough sometimes.

  18. Ogechi says:

not a fan for any gay community…but Ellen is my role model…she made me live on when i tot my life wld end….i love to watch her on tv bcos she is perfect and focused…i love her marriage with portia and i wish them all the best thing in life..

  19. Rosalee says:

@pickelhaube – wow – Gay couples in Canada have been getting married for the past few years, no one has turned to salt nor has society crumbled, dogs are not marrying cats and life continues on without God striking dead anyone who performed the ceremony, religious or non-denomination.

  20. Maritza says:

Well, if she really loves Portia than she’ll let her have children, if that is what she wants. I’m glad they are happy.

  21. Firestarter says:

It never bodes well when people make these “forever” statements.

  22. stacy says:

The love comments were probably taken out of context. After all the ups and downs Ellen has been through in her life/ career, she should be able to talk about what makes her happy w/out people rolling their eyes. I love Ellen, watch her talk show as much as i can!

  23. Tess says:

    File under: Kiss of Death.

  24. princess pea says:

What exactly do y’all think a person should ask in an interview, what is an acceptable topic for a celeb? Because obviously, they shouldn’t talk about their marriage, as per all your comments. They probably shouldn’t talk about a charitable cause or politics; you know we like to shit on that. You know, why interview at all? Maybe what’s best is if all the talk shows and magazines just go far far away… then we won’t have to be dismayed every time someone opens their mouth. Sheesh.

  25. why do I care? says:

    Princess Pea – THANK YOU…

That is exactly what I was thinking!

And yes, for all you others, I am well aware this is a gossip blog…

  26. Jules says:

@ramona putz- What is a typical dumb dyke? I’m just curious and since you have vast knowledge on the subject I’d like you to inform me. Thank you.

  27. filthycute says:

    “de Rossi, 36” — LOL!!!!!!!

  28. Aspie says:

Tyra’s been on Oprah’s show lots of time and she loves Oprah. I think it’s obvious the way she tries to constantly imitate Oprah on her show.

Also, I think Ellen looks great for her age. I hope to look that good at 51. But I think she would look better with a little extra meat on her bones.

  29. bow says:

looks like mom walking with her daughter in the pics.

  30. Tia says:

ramona putz, wow must suck for you to live such a miserable life.. as they say misery loves company. So transparent, but what do we expect from such a cool person like yourself being so bold as to post comments behind a computer. Are you kidding??? Ellen is a milliion times smarter and more awesome than you… jealous much?? WIERDO !! They are so beautiful together. People in this world wait so long to find what they have found. Way to go Ellen and Portia, you are loved by sooooooooo many.

  31. ramona putz says:

    Jules: Figure it out.
Tia: You probably lose brain cells every time you fart. Oh, & it’s weirdo not wierdo, i before e except before c dumb dumb.
She made similar declarations years ago on Oprah when she was with Anne Heche. Yes, Ellen is brilliant.

  32. I adore Lady Gaga! She’s the greatest!
