Princess Charlene feels ‘so much better,’ she has ‘less pain & much more energy’

Princess Charlene is doing so much better. 2021 was awful for her – she escaped to South Africa in the spring of 2021, only to get waylaid there for months by a particularly devastating ENT infection. When she finally got back to Monaco in November 2021, she was still in really bad shape, and Prince Albert shipped her off to some treatment center in Switzerland. She eventually returned to Monaco and slowly began making public appearances with her husband and their twins. Something still seemed “off” with her, but if we’re being honest, Charlene just seems off in general. In any case, in recent months, she genuinely seems to be doing better and looking worlds better. She spoke to the local paper, Monaco Matin, this week to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the start of her foundation. She gave updates on her health and her kids too. Some highlights:

Her health: “I would first like to say that I feel so much better today than I have in recent years. I feel less pain and much more energy. I continue to recover, to rebalance myself. It will still take time, but I’m happy. My family and those I love are my rock. I approach the future, step by step, one day at a time.”

The future roles of her children: Charlene added that while they were “born with responsibilities and duties” they are still learning their royal roles. “With my husband (Prince Albert), when we have to go to an event, we explain to them what the nature of this event, this ceremony…They like accompanying us, and with the Prince, the four of us enjoy doing these together. But as I said they are still young, they continue to observe, to learn, before it will become natural for them.”

The kids came out for Monaco’s National Day: “Our children were very enthusiastic to take part in this National Day and we were very proud to see their maturity. The family unit is essential for us. National Day is always a joyful time with the family, supported by many interactions with the Monegasque population. And this year, Jacques was happy to wear the same uniform as his father. And Gabriella, very proud to wear her medal.”

The kids have Big Twin Energy: “They are two children who have their own language and who understand each other,” she continued, raising the special link the children share — a quality Prince Albert once joked “makes them very much into accomplices.” “They love and protect each other and share an immense benevolence between them. It’s a rather unique bond I must say, and I see this particularity that the twins share.”

I think she loves her kids very much and I think she’s sticking with it for the kids. She knows that, Albert knows that and they’ve seemingly come around to a much better arrangement. She even looks happy to be around Albert sometimes. I wonder what the shift was? I think it was everything that happened last year, the escape to South Africa, not being with her kids for months, her health problems, being sent to Switzerland, all of it. Weirdly, it feels like Jacques and Gabriella are pretty well-adjusted given the chaos around mom and dad, right? They seem like normal little kids, they go along with making appearances but they don’t really understand what’s happening in the larger sense. It’s funny that the twins have that twin-energy too. I bet they’re little rascals.

My goodness does she ever look and seem better. I hope that she truly is doing well and that her babies are happy. Her husband needs a damn tailor.

    • YVR says:

OMG, you’re so right about the tailor. For someone with oodles of cash, he can certaily afford beautifully cut, well-fitted suits. He’s one of the messiest dressers.

What’s going on with Alberts forehead?

The above tells me that they’ve finally found a way to co-exist as a separated couple which is what Albert wanted all along and what Charlene tried to escape from when her passport was seized at the airport.

I will never understand why he didn’t just let her go and then allow his courtiers to find him a more willing Patsy.

I mean, he was getting pretty long in the tooth, and the kind of women he wanted to marry (a Grace Kelly type) probably wasn’t easy for him to find. Maybe he say her as his last, best shot. Or maybe he just thought she “owed” it to him because he had “invested” so many years–come to think of it, I go with option 2.

I don’t know enough about Albert..but it sounds like, unlike Charles, Albert was unwilling to sacrifice Charlene’s physical well being to his ego. Perhaps this turmoil was a shock to his system that reset their relationship in a way that they could make a better arrangement?

    • Couch potato says:

I hope you’re right. Don’t know much about either of them, but it was painful to see some of the photos of her from Sout Africa.

I don’t know that hereditary monarchs ever have the full capacity to love, but perhaps losing his mother so tragically at 24 and watching his father slowly kill himself gave Albert a little more compassion for the mother of his children than most.

I’m probably giving him far too much credit, but I’d like to think he genuinely cared enough to do what it took to get her happy and healthy.

Molly- Also I think Albert and the Monaco royal family are not under the same pressure or held on as much of a pedestal as the BRF, so maybe their institution doesnt breed the same level of narcissism in general.

To me, it seems that Albert really made an effort with the children during her absence, they seem comfortable and happy around him. That goes a long way with a mother, perhaps loving her children so much, and seeing Albert trying so hard to be a good father and to take care of her, helped Charlene to come to terms with her situation and decide to make the best of it. After all, once the children are 18, they tend to leave the nest at least for the school year (college etc) so she can rest easy that its not forever.

She seems to have a bit of a Victoria Beckham face where botox, fillers, and a fierce opposition to smiling makes her looks really sad and serious in all photos.

Victoria, however, always seems like a delight on social media and in interviews, so I hope that’s the case with Charlene too. Hopefully she’s able to be joyful and fulfilled away from the cameras.

I think there were multiple factors at play in this scenario.
I think Charlene was always miserable in the role, and desperate to escape, and that may have manifested in the form of addiction.
I think whatever happened in South Africa was a come to Jesus moment for Albert and they came to terms.
I think they likely renegotiated her contract or a postnup, and she went to rehab and got more family support.
I think she is likely allowed a bit of play on the side now as well, we all know Albert has always had his flings.
She was likely very isolated before.

I completely forgot about PC with and the British monarchy drama. Hope she is on the road to good health – both mental and physical. We’ve seen what these institutions do to women that marry into it.

  9. Maeve says:

It’s great to see her doing so well – Monaco is such a goldfish bowl, and the paps there are terrible. I don’t have a terribly high opinion Albert BUT he does seem to have built a decent enough relationship with his older kids now, and to have shielded Charlene in the last couple of years. Hopefully the twins will have happier romantic lives than Rainier & Grace’s three children have done. (Honestly, who’d be a royal?)

    I like this news.
I truly hope she is feeling better. If she has health problems that cause chronic pain I wish her the best. Long term chronic health issues are exhausting and trying for the person and their loved ones.

Their marriage started out “odd” to say the least. If she and Albert can come to an agreement that works for both of them and the kids are doing OK = Excellent!
I hope they all continue to be well.

Btw, I like this interview. Well spoken without all the drama of the BRF, RR, The Men in Grey.
Short public statement, everyone looks fine in the pics, back to your daily life. 🙂

  11. Cerys says:

She has been looking a lot better and more content during her recent appearances. It looks as if she and Albert have come to an understanding that suits them both.

  12. Annalise says:

It’s funny I used to totally think that Albert was the bad guy, a philanderer with multiple children outside of his marriage, and little regard for Charlene. But the more I learn about him, the more and more he comes off as a pretty decent guy. I know so so little about Charlene but the story about her moving Albert’s son’s (a biracial son by another woman) bedroom to one by the servants quarters or something, while Albert was away on business, left a VERY bad taste in my mouth

Thank you for stating this! The women on this website tend to only scream racism when it fits thier narrative. This woman’s behavior is very questionable but somehow, she is always a victim.
