Alison Hammond met the Waleses, who professed their love of spicy food

During their trip to Birmingham last Thursday, the Prince and Princess of Wales briefly met Alison Hammond, a talk show hostess who is well-known and well-liked within the UK. Some of her celebrity interviews have gone viral internationally, like her hilarious interview with Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling. She’s joyful, funny and sharp. She’s also fine with being used as diversity prop for Peg and Buttons. Apparently, the Waleses’ office called Hammond at the last minute and asked her to meet Will and Kate in Birmingham, and she was at the pub where the Waleses played darts.

Alison Hammond got a few secrets out of Kate Middleton, including what she will be wearing for King Charles’ upcoming coronation. The This Morning host, 48, said she met Kate and Prince William when the couple visited Birmingham on Thursday to celebrate the area’s diverse cultures and creative industries — and she even had a chance to ask the Princess of Wales about her coronation outfit.

“I said, ‘What are you wearing for the coronation?'” Hammon recalled on the show. “Cause I said to her, ‘I’m feeling like you’re gonna wear blue.’ She was like, ‘There is a hint of blue.’ So I was like, fantastic!”

Hammond said Princess Kate, who wore a red collared tie dress, “made a beeline for me” at the event and the pair got to talking about topics like cocktails and dinner. The Great British Bake-Off host noted that Princess Kate “said she liked spicy cocktails but doesn’t like sweet ones or anything like that.”

Hammond shared the royal also has a preference for “spicy food,” adding that she invited Kate over to her house for “a big Jamaican dinner.”

“I said, ‘Next time you’re in Birmingham, come over to my house, I’ll cook for you,'” Hammond said. She was like, ‘I’ll definitely come,’ I was like, ‘Really? This is the best day ever.’ ”

Hammond noted that she even overheard the couple “arguing” over her at one point. She said, “When we went upstairs because I said I want to have a selfie, [Prince William] was there talking to Kate, he was saying, ‘Kate, Alison supports Aston Villa, she’s my best friend and she has asked us to go to dinner.’ Then Kate goes, ‘I know, she’s already asked us to go to dinner.’ ”

Hammond said: “I asked him again, ‘Do you want to come my house for dinner?’ He said, ‘What would you cook for me Alison?’ I was like, ‘Well, I would actually cook you some curried coat and rice, some banana bread.’ And he was like, ‘Yes I’m definitely coming’.”

[From People & Yahoo News]

I’m shocked that Kate didn’t offer to bring her homemade chutney. Nevermind – it’s not like William and Kate will actually go to Hammond’s house for dinner. It’s not my place to judge Hammond – from what I’ve seen of her, she seems like a really nice and funny person, and I would imagine that there are still a lot of Britons who are happy enough to meet royal peeps. If she was fine with being used as a prop, so be it, who are we to judge. I mean, I judge the hell out of William and Kate, who definitely made a point of doing this performative “see, we have Black friends” crap.

I REALLY wish Black Brits would stop allowing themselves to be used as props for this racist a$$ family.

    • Nedsdag says:

Because some of them want those gongs (OBE, MBE, knight/dame hood) and they’ll go full bow just to get one.

  2. Laura-Lee MacDonald says:

Well, Kate could have just meant she is tolerant of garlic, so who knows how she’d actually do with Hammonds (likely extraordinary) cooking.

  3. equality says:

She likes spicy instead of sweet cocktails? So all the stories about being into crackbabies is a lie? Because they are described as being sweet and fruity. And being told there was a “hint of blue” in her coronation outfit is getting out of her what she’s wearing?

    • SunnyDays says:

Who else thinks the “hint of blue” is just big blue on her finger and she is going to wear something completely not blue?

These people probably think black pepper is spicy, pleeeeeease spare me the image of them agreeing to eat curried goat. Everyone knows they would never.

      • Tacky says:

I wish Alison would invite me to dinner. I love a good curried goat.

      • Concern Fae says:

Can we take bets on whether she’ll wear the same color as Camilla, but brighter?

I must say that I own my Irish taste buds that can’t take the heat. Although, I had a boyfriend who went on about how he liked spicy foods. He’d eat Chinese food that made him sweat. Tried a bite of it once and didn’t think it was all that spicy. So people can have very different tolerances. It makes the question of do you like spicy hard to answer.

      • BeanieBean says:

It’s mutton, it’s fine! Sheep/goat, practically the same critter!

  4. Ceej says:

Kate looks very nice in that photo with Alison. Super relaxed. William looks like smiling hurts him lol. He’s not figured out the full teeth smile that stops before it reaches the frozen grimace stage…

Her neck is a bit splotchy but Birmingham is a very diverse city so no wonder her allergy flared up.

    • Nic919 says:

There was a lot of facetune in that IG photo.

    • TheVolvesSeidr says:

I’ve always thought that William’s smile looks like he’s actually baring his teeth. He doesn’t even know how to smile genuinely.

  5. Miranda says:

The ludicrously sweet ingredients list for a Crack Baby suggests that Kate can’t even tell the truth when it pertains to something as trivial as what sort of cocktails she enjoys.

    • BeanieBean says:

That was my first thought when I read that–wait a minute, she likes Crack Babys! Or was that all a lie? Or is this a lie? Or is every sentence attributed to them a lie? And they like spicy food? My thought was with these two, sure, salt & pepper, yummy!

  6. They found themselves a ringer willing to help with their plot that we like black people. If she is okay with that then she will have to live with it.

    • PC says:

Yeah, right now it’s all shits and giggles with Alison…just don’t marry in. My biggest wish is one day in the future Louis comes home and says, “Mummy, Pa, remember your friend Alison Hammond, this is her daughter. We are dating.”

  7. Zapp Brannigan says:

I am betting they think parsley is a spice, and coriander is just too much.

  8. Agreckreckoning says:

‘a big Jamaican dinner’ LOL Hopefully Allison will fire WanK before they sit down.

A big Jamaican dinner sounds delicious to me.

  9. Pinkosaurus says:

I’m not going to criticize a reporter or TV personality for jumping at a newsworthy interview. It’s her job! I’d hate to think only hateful white people would get the boost of having these interviews.

    • sunny says:

This part. I hate all the judgment she is getting, It is really hard to do your job as a POC, specifically as a Black person. And truthfully the family has used Black people as props for a long time including Megan. We should cut some slack to Black Britons who were raised with monarchy and understand that the racial dialogue while facing the same issues isn’t totally at the same place it is in the United States.

I do wonder if Alison had to put up with bs microaggressions though.

And also you cannot convince me that any of that family including Harry eat spicy food. They weren’t even allowed garlic!!!!! I know plenty of white people legitimately do enjoy spicy food but it is an acquired taste and many people aren’t actually all that familiar with their spice tolerance. See all my white friends in grad school who insisted they loved spicy food and when I had them over for a dinner party and made Jamaican food(my family is Jamaican) there were running noses and tears abound because they thought hot was like black pepper or tabasco.

      • Steph says:

@sunny lol Harry can’t handle spicy either! Watch the Africa documentary from his and Meghan’s tour. He almost choked!

  10. Snuffles says:

I believe the Wales’s like their spice how they like their POCs, rarely and in small doses.

  11. Amy Bee says:

The team at KP sat down and said we need some black people at the engagement in Birmingham because the locals are not going to show up. Who’s a famous black person from Birmingham? Oh, Allison Hammond, let’s give her a call.

    • An says:

lol no one was showing up? I think you missed the pictures of the street crowds.

      • Amy Bee says:

Perhaps I should have been more specific. I meant black people not showing up. If you don’t know Birmingham has one of the largest black communities outside of London.

  12. Harper says:

How can they ever talk to Allison Hammond again when she repeats their private conversations to the press? Oh, wait, it’s okay when they are talking to a plant put there to remind everyone that WanK aren’t the Royal Racists. See, we are arguing over whose best friend she is and talking about our favorite topics, Aston Villa and curry!! Repeating conversations is only forbidden by Harry. Transparent scammers.

    • KaMo says:

See. We’re not prejudice. Alison Hammond is hanging out with us. How dare anyone say we don’t love our white skinned nephew (Archie) and niece (Lilibet) just because their mom Meghan is biracial and grandmother Doria is Black. 😏

  13. Kaz says:

Yeah this will be the way forward and there will be plenty of people ready to jump at the opportunity. Nothing anyone can do about it but ignore it if you’re not a fan.
Considering how they treat people who go against the establishment especially black people and minorities I don’t fault them for toeing the line.
They can stay on that island doing PR just leave Harry and Meghan alone

  14. Pumpkin says:

Alison is probably one of the many, many Brits who simply don’t have an opinion on the royal family or its members either way. So if she meets one (or a few of them) and they’re nice to her, she’ll relay that and be positive about just like most other people would. It doesn’t mean she’s become a monarchist or even a W&K fan.

  15. Ciotog says:

The Waleses had to get close to each other to both get in that selfie up top, yet they still managed to leave so much daylight between their bodies. These are not people who are intimate with each other anymore.

  16. Bklne says:

Slipping in a shout-out of love and support for Mary Pester today!

  17. aquarius64 says:

Any response to Hammond’s meet and greet on social media?

  18. Nic919 says:

Did we even see them eat Jamaican food when they were actually in Jamaica? There was the event where kate was downing raw seafood but I don’t recall anything else.

  19. MSTJ says:

I am thinking from an employment perspective, if her employer asked her to get over there because the Palace reached out , career wise it’s likely she couldn’t choose not to do her job. She was also selected as one of the hosts for the BAFTA (William is President) awards so I’m thinking she is likely already on the Palace radar as a go to POC to leverage. So yeah, I’m thinking there is likely a line to thread between personal and professional positions in these types of situations. That being said, there is also the likelihood that she has a personal fascination with the royals or specifically William and Kate, and was thrilled to be asked to be there. After all, they are also one set of the face/brand of the pinnacle of British society (The Royals) that is marketed to the residents (from childhood to adulthood) in schools, institutions and various social settings.

It’s interesting how delicately blacks have to navigate the class system in the UK to not be maligned in the society. I am a foreigner who curiously observes the theater of life within the UK class system.

    • Well Wisher says:

Alison is an employee, she is a good presenter and someone who does not offer her point of view, in other words – a professional.
She was not chosen of any of those wonderful qualities except that she is a minority, and after the last news cycle – there was a need for a ‘black’ friend.
Without knowing how Alison feel about this particular engagement, she endured enough from the commenters of the fail, who did not recognize the plot and went hard against her.
I guess that is part of being an adult, one has to take one’s medicine ……..

  20. ❌❌❌TART ❌❌❌ says:

So………..Meghan’s letter ruled Chuckles out as the person with unconscious bias. The Hammond visit has ruled out the now Wales as having unconscious bias. This is feeling like a game of Clue.

    • HeatherC says:

This visit in no way rules them out of unconscious bias, or out and out racism. This was a nice scheduled photo op and both were coached on how to behave around POC because of the Caribbean tour. This was stagecraft and nothing else. We’ll see if Will actually shows up for some curried goat and rice.

(Also a few years ago wasn’t there an article where William’s wife stated she loves to make curry but had to make a mild one for Willie because of his delicate palate?)

      • Lady Digby says:

I assumed Basher and Barbie knew Torygraph royal racist story was about to drop and got their people to get them Alison in for a photo purely for optics. Alison’s tweets about the invite reveal it was completely last minute which indicates a scramble for well known female POC. I wondered why they were doing 3 different events on the same day and attempting to look friendly and relatable.

  21. Beverley says:

These optics work on the very people they are targeting: decent white folks. POC see this ploy for what it is. Besides, the royals couldn’t care less that Black folks aren’t buying what they’re selling. It’s white people they are targeting, to showcase how they “aren’t racist”. If the Waleses can convince Caucasians that snapping a selfie with a Black celebrity demonstrates their decency and diversity, the goal has been accomplished.

  22. Over it says:

Your more open minded and less judging than me Kaiser. So forgive me if I judge just a little. Yes it’s definitely her choice. She is fine with these racist shit people who over the last few weeks alone wanted the world to know that walking next to their black sister in law was the hardest thing ever or even the crap about freeing Meghan slave ancestors. And Meghan being at the back at the bus aka church or whatever other racist, cruel vindictive, asshat story is out there . So many to keep up with. Considering Allison works for that racist network itv you can’t tell me she doesn’t know what Kate and Willy are all about. Yet she is good with all of it . So best of luck to her and her choices.

    • Lee says:

To be fair, most people couldn’t care less about the Royal shenanigans, they are just doing their jobs and getting on with their lives

  23. Eggbert says:

Didn’t Khate tell a kid she likes to put bacon on her pizza because bacon is too spicy
