Apparently, Princess Anne is the king’s latest ‘secret weapon,’ much to her chagrin

How many secret weapons does one family need? For the Windsors, a royal can’t break wind without being declared the family’s latest secret weapon. Usually, the Duchess of Edinburgh or Princess of Wales gets that “secret weapon” treatment, perhaps because in their heart of hearts, they know that the married-in royals are expendable. Sophie and Kate are always trying to convince people of their “worth” to the Firm in ways that the “blood royals” never have to. Which is why it’s weird to see Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, be referred to as King Charles’s secret weapon. That’s what Tatler did on social media, as a way to jazz up the announcement of a scheduled appearance by Charles and Anne.

King Charles III will be joined by his sister, Princess Anne, as he presents the new Sovereign’s Standard to The Blues and Royals at Buckingham Palace on Thursday, ahead of the regiment’s starring role in Trooping the Colour on Saturday.

The Princess Royal, Royal Colonel of The Blues and Royals, will be by her brother’s side for the ceremony, which will take place in the Quadrangle of the royal residence. The King’s arrival will be announced by a fanfare, following which His Majesty will receive a Royal Salute from The Blues and Royals. ‘The new Standard will then be consecrated by the Chaplain General, before it is presented by The King to the Regiment,’ Buckingham Palace explains. ‘The Standard will be given to The Sovereign’s Escort, and the mounted troop will then offer a second Royal Salute.’

The ceremony will involve 35 service personnel and 27 military working horses, who will be on parade. The presentation of the new Standard normally takes place every decade. The regiment was last presented its Standard by Queen Elizabeth II in May 2014.

[From Tatler]

I suspect that Anne got this “gig” because she’s much more interested in military stuff, as opposed to Queen Camilla and the rest of them. It does sound like an honor for Anne to be “included,” and I imagine she’ll be wearing one of her uniforms too. But again, she’s not a secret weapon – she’s the king’s sister, the highest ranking royal woman except for the queen, and she’s also very tired of all of this sh-t. Still, Anne doesn’t have to prove her worth like all of the expendable married-ins.

You had me at “…a royal can’t break wind without being declared the family’s latest secret weapon.” 😂🤣

    • Emme says:

Secret weapon and blindsided, plus all the adjectives the media use to describe William’s bad tempered eruptions, Lord how BORED I am with these words. The media find what they think is a useful word and flog it death. Have these journalists been educated? Do they possess a dictionary or Thesaurus?

      • Cara says:

If so, they need to look up the word “secret”. And at exactly what point did Anne become weaponized? Menopause???

    • PrincessOfWaffles says:

it’s time to shuffle. I say it’s just hurts Charles ego and smallness that he cannot go to events because the crowds doesn’t go crazy for him like they did for diana. He needs more oumpf. And also an embarrassment for both him and camilla that the crowds would probably cold shoulder the mistress queen when they’re together at events. Willie probably feels small too beside kate + they’re separated so… So they need to reshuffle and this is the new idea willie/sophie, charles/anne, kate by herself

  2. NJGR says:

Anne does seem a lot less whiney than Chaz at least.

    • Couch Potato says:

She also seems to have more spine than him. Look at the difference in their postures in the top image. He looks like he’s s-shaped, while she’s standing up straight,.

      • JanetDR says:

        It’s really striking isn’t it?

      • Mary Pester says:

@couchpotato, because she HAS more spine than him, that’s why she was prince Philips favourite, as was harry on the male side of the family. He always said to Charles to “for gods sake man up” and with Harry, he said to Harry before he left for Afghanistan, “make sure you come back safe”, I think one (of the many) problems BULLYAM has, is that Harry was so close to Philip
And Princess Anne, takes no BS from anyone, that’s why she is so fond of Harry. I will never forget Anne telling the reporter to NAFF OF, brilliant, so you can see just how like Harry she is.

      • TheVolvesSeidr says:

I noticed his posture too, wtf happened to him? He used to stand up straight. He looks terrible there. Standing like a five year old kinda.

      • BeanieBean says:

That’s the posture Tim Conway adopted when playing one of his dopier characters.

  3. Lorelei says:

This family is ridiculous. They literally have a new “secret weapon!” every week. It’s so, so stupid

  4. ArtFossil says:

Omid Scobie on Twitter: “Royal beat challenge: go just one week without calling someone a “secret weapon”. We are TIRED”

    • BeanieBean says:

Love it! As there’s a trooping every year, it must be hard to come up with a new angle. I mean, yippee skippy, this year there’s a new standard, but still. Every year, same time, same place, same players. Ho hum.

  5. girl_ninja says:

How many secret weapons does this bum have?

  6. SarahCS says:

Maybe because they know they are losing the popularity ‘war’ and eventually people will be fed up enough with them that we’ll become a republic.

  7. More pomp and bullshitstance. A new secret weapon. What will this weapon be asked to do? Really why do they need a secret weapon for what? Same crap different day different secret weapon.

  8. Monlette says:

The impression I got from the Dimbleby book is that Anne is the only person Charles truly cares about. He was positively devastated by the kidnapping attempt.

    • Nic919 says:

I think because they only had each other as siblings for a while and Andrew and Edward came much later and with their parents acting a bit differently toward those two, Charles and Anne bonded. It probably helped that Anne was never a real threat to his position as heir, especially once andrew was born.

  9. Elle says:

Every time they say they have a secret weapon, what I hear is “why do people still not like us? Let’s try a different guy”

  10. Jais says:

Has Anne not been called the secret weapon before? This feels recycled.

    • Lizzie says:

She is 70+ years old and been a hard working royal her whole life, how much of a secret she?

      • Jais says:

Lol right? Shhh. Have you heard about our newest new secret weapon? The clownery, for real.

  11. HeyKay says:

    Team Anne.
Anne has done 2x the royal events vs. W&K. Even at her age.
Anne was devastated at QE funeral.
Chuck is lucky to have her willing to still do events.

I do think Anne gets more respect and is better liked than Charles. Rightly so.

  12. Lady D says:

All these secret weapons. Just who are they doing battle with that they need sooooo many secret weapons? Can you imagine their war room? Incandescent William stomping around yelling for attention, Kate in overdrive fluttering her hands while opening and closing her mouth like a goldfish, arrogant Andrew screaming to be put in charge, Charles sulking on his throne, and the vicious wasp whispering in Chuckie’s ear. May you all get what you deserve.

    • SarahCS says:

      Irrelevance.

      • Lady D says:

Nostradamus gave Chuckie five years on the throne. I wonder if he has given thought to what the history books will say about him? Every single one of those sleazy reporters will write a book on him.

  13. maisie says:

I just have to laugh at the uselessness of this all, because what does it really accomplish? Bupkes

Funnily enough though, I think that H&M would not have stayed even if the RF had played nice with them. They had bigger dreams and bigger ambitions than a life of idleness in shabby palaces broken up by the occasional ribbon cutting.

    • IRONE says:

I disagree. Harry still wants Charles to ask him to represent the crown in the Commonwealth. I thought the ship had sailed, but that’s what Harry said in his interviews promoting Spare.

      • Saucy&Sassy says:

IRONE, I think Harry knows that any reconciliation isn’t possible. I do think that he and Meghan would be really good as a representative for the Commonwealth, but I think KFC has written them off. That’s the feeling that I get from him.

  14. Amy Bee says:

The press keep searching for a secret weapon because they know that the Royal Family is that popular and they need somebody to spark interest in the royals.

  15. phlyfiremama says:

“Look mummy, they brought the only one who actually does ANY work whatsoever with them!”

  16. beautifully broken says:

They are about the same age, yet Anne always dresses so much better than Camilla. Maybe Camilla dresses like she is supposed to be mothering Charles?

  17. EllenOlenska says:

He figures that if anyone throws an egg at him while he’s with her she will have the quick reflexes to smack it away….

  18. ales says:

Thought Saint Khate was the secret weapon for the BRF.
