Gwyneth Paltrow used her Oscar as a doorstop in her Vogue ’73 questions’ video

Can’t believe Gwyneth Paltrow has never done one of Vogue’s “73 Questions” videos. She should have been one of the first ones to do it! Many celebrities love doing Vogue’s “73 Questions” because they get to show off their homes or, in Roger Federer’s case, Wimbledon’s Centre Court. Gwyneth chose to do her video at her Amagansett home, her sprawling and lush Hamptons estate where she summers every year. Seriously, this video is such “Hamptons real estate p0rn.” Now, do I believe that Gwyneth actually maintains these lush grounds? No, she doesn’t. I do appreciate the fact that she doesn’t keep her massive property manicured to a ridiculous degree though – there are overgrown bushes and some weeds here and there, and she clearly has no f–king idea what she’s doing in her vegetable garden. Please, she hires peasants to handle all of that.

The biggest headline from this – beyond the fact that Gwyneth has good taste in Hamptons real estate – is that Gwyneth uses her Oscar as a doorstop. You can see it in the video around the 3-minute mark. She points to her Oscar and says “My doorstop! It works perfectly.” I guess we’re supposed to think that she’s so humble and that Oscars are not important to her whatsoever. Gwyneth was eyerolling her Oscar, which is pure, unadulterated GWYNETH. She put the Oscar there knowing that Vogue would record it and then after they finished filming, her Oscar was returned to wherever she normally keeps it, I assume her office.

The outrage online was so immediate, Gwyneth’s rep had to run to Variety and say that the Oscar doorstop thing was “of course, it’s a joke.” I hope Apple calls her mom and tells her how uncool she is.

  1. The entitlement with this one! Using your Oscar as a door stop. Does she think she can just get one anytime she acts in something? I love to see how other celebrities put theirs in a place to showcase it and the hard work they put in to win it. I don’t know why I am surprised I shouldn’t be because she proves herself to be so entitled on a regular basis.

    • Megan says:

Meryl Streep keeps one I. Her guest bathroom so you can see yourself holding it in the mirror.

  2. Cathy says:

Humble brag much? Oscar as a doorstop?

But I really must book a hair trim tomorrow as I don’t want to look like a goat has been chewing on my hair too.

    • Dlc says:

Lol! SO much of this was ridiculous. Her biggest vice is her 1 alcoholic drink a week? Cmon. All of the dull answers, she was barely trying. The Oscar she had to run to get for her last interview….does she move it around so she can casually bring it up repeatedly? Its embarrassing. And yeah, her hair is SO BAD!

  3. kel says:

    Totally disrespectful.

  4. JMOney says:

Gwyneth using the Oscar as a doorstop speaks to how she now views the Acting profession. She has complete disdain for that industry and the fact she misses nothing about it shows her desire to be an actress had little to do with the craft and everything to do with money. When she was working as an actress in the 90s-00’s, actors made BANK nowadays not so much.

Perhaps Gwyneth has come to this epiphany that it was all about the money which fine but why disrespect and have such clear disdain for an industry that paved the way for her and her parents wealthy lifestyle? Classless and tactless.

    • mosia says:

awards and statuettes mean a lot when you are up-and-comer and in acting they mean a lot as they bring eyeballs. Yet that is not only her’s attitude towards awards, later in the career in many professions, people don’t care about them that much if they don’t bring you directly clients or money etc. Many also see behind the scenes and are disgusted by money and politics aspects. The favourite one I have was actually made as a doorstep, as a design feature, that was designers commentary, how perception of the statuettes changes with your career.

    • Mia4s says:

OK I’m going to name the elephant in the room since no one else is. She’s an insufferable twit, don’t get me wrong; but she basically owes that Oscar to the campaigning skills of Harvey We*nste*n. So I guess I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s a bit more conflicted about the award than she’d like to admit?

    • Macky says:

She literally stole the part from Wynonna rider. That’s another aspect that makes the doorstop thing disrespectful.

  5. Lexilla says:

This tracks so well it’s practically on rails.

  6. snappyfish says:

Unpopular post warning….That is Cate Blanchett’s Oscar….Sorry but her Elizabeth was so much better than Paltrow’s Viola/Thomas. But Harvey (& Mummy & Daddy) obtained that for her. SIL was a fun movie & but Elizabeth was brilliant. Carry On.

    • Kebbie says:

Not unpopular at all. I think it’s widely acknowledged as one of the worst Oscar upsets. I’m not sure if “upset” is the right word, but people know that Harvey basically bought Gwyneth’s Oscar and she didn’t deserve it.

    • Deena Farah says:

I agree. Two powerful performances from Cate Blanchett and Brazilian actress Fernanda Montenegro in Central Station deserved that Oscar more than Gwyneth. I watched that Oscar and was very disappointed as I was rooting for Fernanda. Central Station is a wonderful film.

I *JUST* made that argument at dinner the other night when my husband and I were trying to explain to our son (16) who GP is. I said “she’s an insufferable snake-oil salesman who stole Cate Blanchett’s Oscar for ‘Elizabeth’ and my husband said, “she was Pepper Potts in ‘Iron Man'” and the kid still DGAF, lol. My husband showed him a pic of her from some red carpet and he said, “oh, she looks like she could be one of my friend’s moms or something.” Which would KILL Goop, to know she looks like a normie high school mom from the ‘burbs.

I gave her grudging credit for being willing to go on the record about Weinstein to the NYT, because her willingness to let them use her name gave lots of other victims confidence to come forward too. So she can have a small, grain-free, heirloom ingredient, agave-sweetened cookie for that.

  7. Meredith says:

Damn, I was hoping that was real, that’s exactly the kind of thing I expected from Gwyneth Paltrow.

  8. Andy Dufresne says:

The reason why Gwyneth got that role from Shakespeare in Love was because she “allegedly” stole the script from Winona Ryder. Gwyneth eventually won as Oscar for her role. Yes, they were BFFs before and their friendship ended because of this movie.

So saying/joking that she now uses her Oscar as a door stopper kinda sounds like entitlement to me.

  9. Kristen from MA says:

    Insufferable

  10. Debbie says:

Frankly, I’ve heard a lot of celebrities say such things. Funny, but they don’t make these claims about their Emmys or Tonys, it’s just their Oscars and I think that it’s a humblebrag, as stated above. We all know how much they campaign for it, and we see their heartfelt speeches at the actual ceremonies, so I think that it’s really disingenuous and pretentious to suddenly act so blaze about it.

  11. Lux says:

I just finished reading “The Guest” by Emma Cline, and Gwyneth and her ownership of this Amagansett estate for 18 years is the epitome of what the “protagonist” (if you could call her that) was up against. While wealth disparity is disturbing to the degree with which it divides, the novel makes a compelling case for why the “haves” do create them own worlds to guard against the “have-nots,” but it also illustrates how easy it is for a grifter or hanger-on to infiltrate it, if you’re pretty, young and white.

  12. Teddy says:

Lol that bit in the garden. She had no idea what was actually growing there. And it was hilarious how naming a solid food she like to eat tripped her up. She’s so very strange.

  13. Grant says:

If the Oscar should have gone to anyone besides Gwyneth, it was to Fernanda Montenegro NOT Cate Blanchett — and this is coming from someone who thought Gwyneth was exceptional in Shakespeare in Love.

    • Deena Farah says:

Absolutely. Fernanda Montenegro was robbed. I really wanted her to win and I remember the disappointment on her face when Gwyneth’s name was called.

  14. Louise says:

Just how has she become so rich? is it Goop? its not from “acting”.

    • Bee (not THAT Bee) says:

Nepo baby. She started on 3rd base. And she ain’t messin’ with no broke…

    • kerfuffles says:

I was thinking about the same thing. That estate is not just rich but mega-rich. She’s from family money and she’s made money from Goop. But she was also married to Chris Martin during Coldplay’s most successful, prosperous years. She likely received a huge settlement in the divorce. And she’s married to a very wealthy producer now. And of course, money makes money. She’s probably invested millions in all the best funds. I guess that all ads up to mega-rich.

On a side note…I always think her skin and hair looks so dry and not well-cared for. She seems to have gotten way too much sun. Yet she runs a skincare line and has access to all of the best treatments and products. It’s so odd to me why anybody would buy her products.

    • ABCD says:

She didn’t buy it, she got it in the divorce from Chris Martin.

      • CL says:

She and Chris bought that house while they were married. I remember it being featured in a home magazine after they finished decorating it.

    • KathyRo says:

She’s been rich at every turn. Her parents were rich, she married rich ( 2x ) , her acting roles made her rich, now her company, which caters to rich people, is also rich. She’s been rich for so long she thinks she’s middle class.

  15. Mel says:

She is insufferable but a lot of celebrities keep their Oscars in weird places. Someone kept theirs in the bathroom, some people shunt them off to places that are never seen or give them away to parents or donate them to schools. For all the ridiculous things she’s done, this is the least ridiculous.

  16. Ameerah M says:

It’s so funny how outraged people get about the things Gwyneth does- she’s TROLLING Y’ALL. She knows it will get people upset. And like clockwork people get all huffy. Also- it’s HER Oscar guys she can use it as a doorstop if she wants. It’s a gold statue – not the Holy Grail. A couple of famous actors keep theirs in the bathroom above their TOILETS – that’s far more offensive IMO if you want to be offended.

    • Deanie Loomis says:

Yeah, I think some of the outrage here is because people don’t like her. Plenty of celebrities keep their major awards in strange places. I highly doubt that she keeps her Oscar as a doorstep permanently. But even if she did, it’s far and away better than keeping it in her BATHROOM (which some celebrities have admitted to doing).

      • UpIn Toronto says:

This is WHY ppl don’t like her! She scoffs and turns her nose up at the things others would work their fingers to the bone to have: the Oscar as a doorstop, the Marvel movie role she forgets, the first role in a film given to her by Uncle Morty aka THE Steven Spielberg lol. Is there anything to explain why she is so disliked. This person has had pretty much everything handed to her. She has no clue how utterly lucky and blessed she is and she shits on it daily

    • Kebbie says:

I think Kate Winslet said she keeps it in her bathroom so guests can give their acceptance speeches in the bathroom mirror lol

  17. T-Rex says:

    She’s a lot.

  18. Kat says:

    This woman is exhausting.

I am *exhausted* by her and her look at me bs since the 90s.

    What an a-hole.
