Kelly Rowland on Duchess Meghan: ‘She was royal before she was in that family’

This year, there have been several Sussex outings which have not sparked too much discussion in the British media. That’s called “seething” and “ignoring any evidence to the contrary of their preset narratives.” The British media wants to pretend that Prince Harry and Meghan didn’t get invited to Kevin Costner’s first responder fundraiser in Santa Barbara, where Costner invited the Sussexes on stage to present awards, and the Sussexes hung out with A-listers and wealthy people. The British media wants to pretend that Prince Harry wasn’t really invited as a guest of Mercedes to the United States Grand Prix in Austin. The British media wants to pretend that Harry wasn’t hanging out with celebrities and A-listers at an Inter Miami-LA Galaxy game. And the British media absolutely wants to forget that Meghan went to Beyonce’s special birthday concert in LA, and that Meghan hung out with Ted Sarandos, Jeff Bezos and Beyonce’s inner circle, like Kerry Washington and Kelly Rowland. Well, Hello Magazine asked Kelly Rowland about it and Kelly is a big Meghan fan. I don’t imagine that these quotes will be picked up by many British outlets:

Legends only! As previously reported, Meghan Markle celebrated Labor Day at the Sofi Stadium in Los Angeles, taking in Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour concert on September 4 with some very famous seatmates: Kerry Washington and Kelly Rowland, with dazzling pics of the trio to prove it. For Kelly’s part, the singer and actress was impressed by the Duchess of Sussex, she told HELLO! at a WaterWipes event in Brooklyn on Saturday.

“It was my first time meeting her,” the Destiny’s Child alum said. “It was just nice being there with other great women and being able to just simply talk.” It turns out Kelly and Meghan, both 42, and Kerry, 46, have more in common than a love of Beyoncé: all three women have spent a considerable amount of time in the public eye, and are married moms to two young kids each.

“I don’t know what people expect to see or to know, but she just felt very cool and very down to earth. She is very warm,” the “Motivation” singer enthused — and added that Meghan had a regal bearing independent of her very famous husband and in-laws.

“She was royal before she was in that family,” she told HELLO! “I think that we are royalty before anything. And we have to hold ourselves in that regard as humans, as people.”

[From Hello]

YES! “She was royal before she was in that family” SAY IT LOUDER. Of course, Kelly softened it a bit with “I think that we are royalty before anything. And we have to hold ourselves in that regard as humans, as people.” The Windsors aren’t going to like that but it’s especially true in Meghan’s case. She was royal before was part of that family. She has a regal bearing regardless of her title.

    Where’s the lie?

    • theRobinsons says:

I say can I get an AMEN

    • MoxyLady007 says:

She has also carried herself every single step of the way with true elegance and dignity. She has a truly relatable and embraceable presence while also being regal through and through.

      She’s an icon.

      • Agreatreckoning says:

I wish Kelly would have stuck with the word ‘regal’. Regal, to me, is greater than royal. Meghan is regal. On a different post, I believe it was Nick G that brought up Meghan’s Black Regal Peacock tea cup from the 40×40 initiative. Believe that I responded that she looked/was more regal in her casual wear than the others did on big hat day.

pg.331 also pg.330 of SPARE: (picking out music for H&M’s wedding)
“Meg evoked so much in him, qualities I’d rarely seen. In her presence Pa became boyish. I saw it, saw the bond between them growing stronger, and I felt strengthened in my own bond with him. So many people were treating her shabbily, it filled my heart to see my father treating her like the princess she was about to-maybe born(in italics) to-become.”.

Meghan has always understood the hierarchy. It’s not her fault that her natural state of being & intelligence, multi degrees from a very highly respected University and gorgeousness, eclipsed other married ins.

And then, Charles decided to f*ck them over. Bad Dad. Heat of the CoE.

      • Agreatreckoning says:

correction: Head of the CoE, Though Heat might work too?lol

      • nona93 says:

She dared to ridicule stuffy protocols like how you sit, wave, curtsy and so on. She was articulate and confident and a perfect foil for loveable larrikin Prince Harry. She got on well with the Queen and was headlined as “The new People’s Princess’ after Diana. Anti-monarchy activists have hailed Meghan Markle as the ‘People’s Princess’ during their protest against the Coronation.
Supporters of the campaign group Republic assembled in Trafalgar Square in London to express their opposition of the crowning of King Charles and Queen Camilla.
The protesters held up placards saying ‘Not My King’ and showing their support of Meghan who they claim is the ‘Princess of our Hearts.’ US Weekly had her on their front cover described as the People’s Princess.
        AMEN!

    • MoxyLady007 says:

I know she’s going to get so much hate for that but I can’t help but acknowledge how true it is.

She came to then a fully formed amazing woman with her own career, interests, philanthropic areas of expertise and a willingness to work so flipping hard to make the commonwealth a better place in every way.

She was better than them upon arrival. Because she works – on herself, on her relationships, for the things she believes in.

She is the definition of class, elegance and what it should mean to be royal. That family was just anchors made of hate, trying to hold her back, hold her down, drag her under. How is that in anyway an upgrade.

Except for Harry. Harry made it all worth it for her.

I’m so glad they found each other and got out to freedom together.

  2. Maxine Branch says:

Meghan was active with her philanthropic work prior to entering “that family.” She led a full life and was also very active in her community. Entering “that family” from a philanthropic perspective for her was a down grade.

    • Ash says:

People don’t talk about this enough, Meghan downgraded her life when she joined that family.

      • Amy Bee says:

That’s because for most of the people who have married into the Royal Family it was an upgrade. It was really was a downgrade for Meghan.

      • B says:

Facts! I know Kelly’s overall point is that we are all equal, royal & important. But I genuinely believe Meghan being black while also being smarter, prettier, more popular, more regal, noble, impactful and respected made them want to destroy her because she was literally better than them.

More importantly she was all those things before she even met Harry or that family. Meghan isn’t a unique unicorn she made herself through hard work like millions of others and that tells me there are a lot of people in this world that are superior to that family

      • ArtHistorian says:

I definitely think it is a downgrade to marry into that family. A downgrade to your quality of life. Yes there privilege and money – but lack of freedom, a toxic institutional + family structure and an intrusive press. The fact that the most recent brides in that family has had mental health struggles proves that it is bad to marry into that family.

Both William and Harry had very real troubles finding someone who wanted to marry them. Yes William clearly has an awful personality but Harry hasn’t – but the British press is so toxic and predatory that it scares most women away. William had to settle for a vulgar social climber and Harry married a woman who didn’t really know just how toxic the British press is. I think William’s children will find it very hard to find decent people to marry them because of the toxic press and what has been revealed to be a deeply toxic royal institution after what it did to both Diana and Meghan. It is clear that the BRF learned NOTHING from the fallout of how they treated Diana. And that leaves the field open for very mercenary people.

      • Becks1 says:

And that was a really big problem for the royals. If Meghan was smarter, prettier, more popular, more noble, more impactful BEFORE she was a royal – and marrying into the royal family was a downgrade for her – then what is so special about being a royal? If the royals actually aren’t the most popular, the most impactful, the most special…….then what good is that special bloodline?

      • Shawna says:

@Becks1 — which is why they felt they had to destroy her. She was and is an existential threat to the monarchy, just by being herself.

      • KASalvy says:

@Becks1 THIS!!!! That’s the issue the RF is facing. Marrying into royalty isn’t an upgrade and it’s a huge problem for that “anointed royal bloodline”.

And the world has started to acknowledge that.

      • aftershocks says:

@Becks1: “If Meghan was smarter, prettier, more popular, more noble, more impactful BEFORE … marrying into the royal family … then what is so special about being a royal?”

^^ Quite right @Becks1 💯 This realization of how Meghan entering that family at the ‘top of the pyramid’ shook the monarchy to its core, was perfectly outlined by Royal Suitor (R.S. Locke) in her 2021 article on Medium:

        https://royalsuitor.medium.com/will-the-house-of-windsor-turn-into-a-house-of-cards-d344db7076d9

“What happens to British society when the class structure that underpins it, is challenged?” 🤔😲

    • Miranda says:

This. If anything, she probably married into that family under the impression that it would only help her expand the scope of her philanthropic work. Instead, she was told to stand down because her work ethic made her lazy-ass sister-in-law look bad.

      • Christine says:

That would have been the most shocking to me too. Before Meghan, I would have thought the royal family would love someone who is EXCITED to focus entirely on philanthropic efforts, but nope.

Somehow, I missed that the problem with Diana was also that she was very, very good at her job, and I was paying attention during the Diana years. I thought Chuck was raging because she was so much more popular than him, but it’s both.

      • aftershocks says:

^^ For sure @Christine. I followed Diana too back-in-the-day. I too didn’t recognize certain things that were unfolding at the time. Looking back, I have recognized for awhile that Diana not only brought fresh interest and popularity to the fuddy-duddy yucky Windsors, she also showed them how to do walkabouts effectively. Plus, among other things, she instructed them in what caring service is all about! #ServiceIsUniversal, not the exclusive domain of the British monarchy. 🫷🏻

Both Diana and Meghan did their utmost. They each bent over backwards to do substantive work, and to fit in with that family. Neither were ever truly appreciated by the royal principals, aside perhaps from Philip who advocated for Diana; and the Queen, who respected Meghan.

      • Agreatreckoning says:

@Miranda, she married into that family because she fell in love with Harry. Meghan, I’m guessing, also believed, that being in the BRF spotlighted charities and goodwill across the world. Which, furthered her philanthropy.

Until,….she learned, that’s not how it works. I’m guessing, Harry has questioned the BRF’s “philanthropy” and Meghan posed questions that the ‘The Firm’ didn’t like.

On a different note, I had one more copy of the Together cookbook to give out. Kept it in my car. We had a customer discussing their dining experience at a Middle Eastern restaurant in Milwaukee. They loved it. Offered the cookbook to them. “Oh, yes”. was the response. They wanted to give me/us money for the cookbook-after looking at it. (it is a really well done cookbook). Are you sure we/I was asked? Yep, I’m sure. Share amongst your friends is the best payback.

    • Chantal says:

+1 to all of these comments. She definitely downdraded. And a Black American woman saying “I think we are royalty before anything else and we have to hold ourselves in that regard as humans, as people” has really got to sting, esp for those who claimed to be ordained by God to “rule”.

I’ve always thought that Kelly Rowland and Kerry Washington were classy and regal. I also think Kelly has a very beautiful and underrated voice and should have had more hit songs. I’m glad Meghan continues to embrace such wonderful people and vice versa.

      • aftershocks says:

Kelly Rowland apparently doesn’t remember, but she did meet Meg before (just not as The Duchess of Sussex). There is photo-proof that made the rounds on social media. It was circa 2013 – 2015 (one of those years, BTS at NY Fashion Week). Kelly and Meghan were pictured with a NYC lifestyle talk show host. It was most likely a brief interaction when Meg was a star on Suits. It probably escapes Kelly’s memory, since she comes into brief contact with numerous people at such events. I wonder whether Meghan recalls that brief pre-Harry rubbing of shoulders with Kelly? 😊

      • Angie says:

Diana and Meghan humanized the royal family. They made people comfortable around them which clashes with the image the royals want to maintain of being above everyone else. They don’t seem to realize that people aren’t going to continue to bow to them just because of their ancestors.

  3. I’m sure the tabloids will think differently. Be ready for all the negative 💩about how she isn’t and could never be royalty in 321…. They will not let this go that she behaves and works better than they do. Cry harder that you let your jealousy get the better of you and you let go of a true Queen.

    • Ash says:

They talk about Meghan more than any other member of that family therefore she is royalty. They don’t realize they’re still promoting her even when they’re smearing her.

      • Amy Bee says:

I was just thinking about that. If the press had stopped talking about Harry and Meghan after the had left they wouldn’t be as big as they are today.

      • equality says:

@Amy Bee I disagree. The press talks about them because they are popular. They talk up Sophie, but nobody cares. Once upon a time before SM, the press might have had that power to ignore and have someone out of the public eye. They have to mention H&M in articles about the rest to get the clicks and engagement.

    • Maxine Branch says:

The gutter British tabloids cry so hard re the Sussexes. At this point in their journey only supporters pay attention to what they print. You can only hear or read so much nonsense re the Sussexes until you get to the point of realizing even the small amount of good they print is just nonsense and noise.

      • snaggletooth says:

Truly. One of the reasons I appreciate the public service Celebitchy does for us: letting us hate read and bitch about the British press without giving them a single click. Cuz I agree that at this point we’re the ones following this crap the most lol.

    • Kristen from MA says:

If the “we can all live lives of service” line upset them, the “we are all royal” should cause a total freak-out. 😀

      • AC says:

100% agree @snaggletooth . Thanks to CB and @kaiser as I haven’t clicked on British tabloids and media for years because of their poison and obvious bias towards HM(except I do browse the Guardian and most recently the Byline Times as of last year as they were a bit more fair). And the comments section from these poisonous articles from the tabs were also deranged.
I am looking forward to tomorrow’s blogs(prob the biggest story of the year)… 😀

  4. Chloe says:

    “… that family”

    Exactly kelly.

  5. JT says:

KP must have google alerts on H&M What does the Sussexes vacation have to do Keenshot? Did KP really include that in their briefing or did the Telegraph just need to mention h&m because nobody will read a story about Peg?

  6. Sam says:

Meghan was and is more royal than this inbred family ever was and ever will be.

  7. Jais says:

That family is dull and mean. Meghan is not any of those things. She’s more regal than the made-up regalness that they claim.

  8. Becks1 says:

Damn right she was! And I love that now an old clip of Abigail Spencer saying something very similar, before H&M got married, is now making the social media rounds.

Meghan didnt need “that family,” that family needed her and they made a big mistake when they drove her out. Huge!

  9. Blackapinay says:

    “…that family…”

    That’s gotta sting Chucklef*CK & the Error

    Good.

  10. CatMum says:

as if I could love Kelly any more! she is absolutely correct, and the incandescence coming from that family whenever Meghan breathes proves that they know it.

Harry won the lottery when he met Meghan and I love it for him. after being treated like garbage for so long it must feel really good to be appreciated for who he is.

Harry preferred being in a war zone to slouching around the palaces with his horrible relatives in his TK Maxx clothes. consider that. he’d rather be shot at with real armaments than be sniped at by his worthless brother, Camz, etc.

people like to say that Meghan “caused the rift” but it was actually the attitudes of his relations, long before the two met.

the pics from the Beyonce concert make me really happy!

  11. Ameerah M says:

No lie detected. It’s why she took so easily to royal duties – it was who she was already. REGAL.

  12. aquarius64 says:

The BRF and BM are going to very salty about this: an American “commoner” is basically saying the Windsors aren’t special. Kelly is right with her overall comment, everyone is royal in their own content and wearing looted jewels don’t make you better than anyone else.

    • diANNa says:

Don’t know how the BM could attack this without looking racist. . . I’m betting they will ignore Kelly’s comments.

  13. libby says:

what is royalty anyways? basically a fam of thieves/conquerors/murderers that passed on made up titles and amassed land and a crap ton of wealth. i agree with Kelly, true royalty is based on spirit, personal integrity and actions. there are so many more “royal” than the royal fam.

  14. wellyaknow says:

    “that family” *chef’s kiss*

  15. LocaLady says:

just wanna say it louder for those in the back

    ROYAL 👑

  16. Kitty says:

Just like Diana! They both were more royal than the born royals lol.

  17. Retro Junkie says:

Marrying into that family. That quote is everything. *chef’s kiss*

  18. QuiteContrary says:

Both Meghan and Doria carry themselves like the true queens they are.

I think that’s partly why Kate and Carole were so threatened. The innate elegance, inner serenity and dignity of Meghan and her mother exacerbated the Middletons’ feelings of insecurity.

Kelly Rowland spoke the truth about Meghan and “that family” (just perfect phrasing).

  19. Jaded says:

Meghan doesn’t need all the fake uniforms, medals, ribbons, cloaks, crowns, tiaras, massive jewels or any of the royal frippery to make her regal. She oozes it just by being her wonderful self, and that makes her far more regal than any of those puffed up, sham royals.

  20. Beverley says:

Oh boy! Heads all over the UK are exploding! Not only at the mere suggestion that Duchess Meghan was royal before she met Harry, but the fact that she is half Black will upset the class consciousness on Salt Island. When you are indoctrinated with the relentless class system of the UK, it’s not just absurd that before her marriage to Harry Meghan could be considered royalty, but downright offensive.

Well too bad Saltines! The Duchess of Sussex is classy, educated, focused, wealthy, AND regal. And she was all of that and more, long before Harry came into her life.
    STAY MAD, HATERS.

  21. Saucy&Sassy says:

This is the art of insult. Kelly didn’t resort to the trash that the bm (with the aid of the brf) writes nonstop. This was so very elegantly stated. She just showed some people what true class is.

  22. AC says:

First off , it’s embarrassing already that the State Dept had to be involved in “their” family drama and had to provide a statement for the world to see.
2nd No One cared in the US media (except Murdochs very own outlets) about the Family Guy show that had a satire of HM(normal for anyone who’s in the mainstream here.). Apparently they are clueless on American pop culture. Late night shows and SNL have also taken digs at other members of BRF before(they should Google it).
3rd- the BRF is just “that family” trending all over Twitter yesterday 😀

That’s back to back within 24 hours..

  23. Sof says:

Completely agree, by joining the family she only gained international visibility. And that’s it.
I obviously don’t deny their racism, but sometimes I wonder if a big part of the resentment they feel towards her comes from their inability to match her. She is on another level.

  24. J.Ferber says:

Kelly is right on this one. But she was/is absolutely wrong in supporting that P.O.S. Chris Brown.

  25. KLO says:

Another proof of how people from the states have no idea what a nation state or a royal family is. 😀

  26. Johannes Bols says:

A royal what, exactly? We don’t have royalty here in the United States.
