King Frederik & Queen Mary stepped out for a service at Aarhus Cathedral

Here are some photos of the Danish royal family on Sunday, attending a special service at Aarhus Cathedral. The service was “celebratory” for King Frederik X’s accession to the throne, following his mother’s abdication. Queen Margrethe did not attend but Frederik, Queen Mary and their children were all there and they did what amounted to a photocall outside the church. Fred and Mary’s first weeks as king and queen have seemingly gone well. By that I mean that they’re not dealing with a rash of newly-discovered mistresses popping up all over the place. Whatever Frederik was up to, it’s been handled discreetly, at least that’s what the Danes hope. Speaking of, yet another royal reporter has chimed in, confirming what is already widely believed: that Margrethe abdicated specifically because of Frederik’s infidelity.

There’s nothing quite like a meddling mother-in-law – and it appears even a Queen isn’t above trying to interfere with her son and daughter-in-law’s relationship if it arguably means it will save the future of her country’s monarchy. Or at least, that’s how Queen Margrethe II’s abdication in favour of her scandal-hit son Frederik, now King of Denmark, may seem to some onlookers.

For royal reporter Kenth G. Madsen, the former monarch’s decision to step back from her role on January 14, when her eldest became ruler following his accession to the throne, and her daughter-in-law Mary, became Queen, was ‘damage control’. Mr Madsen suggested that to secure the monarchy amid the ‘affair’ rumours, Margrethe was left with ‘no other choice’ but to abdicate to ‘remove the focus’ from the speculation and ‘at the same time give Mary the status of Queen’ to perhaps avoid ‘a royal divorce scandal’.

Speaking to FEMAIL, the royal reporter claimed: ‘It can be difficult to forgive alleged infidelity in a relationship unless the price for turning a blind eye is suitably high. Against the background of the disclosure of Frederik’s visit to Madrid and the documentation of the meeting with Genoveva Casanova, it is reasonable to believe that Queen Margrethe found the time to throw out a lifeline, before the relationship between the Crown Prince couple completely cracked due to the scandal.’

‘The Queen actually had no other choice: in a strategic move, the monarch succeeded in removing the focus from the affair rumours, and at the same time giving Mary the hyper rare status of queen. A royal divorce scandal of that magnitude could break the strongest royal house forever. The risk that the popularity and reputation the Queen has built up during her 52 years as monarch could be destroyed forever if she had not done damage control on the matter.’

[From The Daily Mail]

I’ve gone back and forth on this and, at this point, I genuinely believe that Frederik’s dalliance/affair with Genoveva Casanova was a huge factor in Margrethe’s abdication, but it wasn’t the only factor. I also believe Margrethe’s health and her recent back surgery were factors too. I just don’t see how Margrethe would abdicate solely to ensure that Mary sticks with a philanderer, especially when European monarchies are littered with scandals bigger than “an unfaithful heir” and/or “an heir going through a messy divorce.” Still, I really wonder what happened in the months between “Frederik’s affair being outed in the Spanish press” and Margethe’s abdication. Did Mary actually threaten divorce? Was she really considering it?

If she really was considering divorce and being made queen was all it took to get the divorce talk shelved, then I am afraid that Mary has no self respect for who she is . What’s to stop him doing it again? He got away with it making her queen. So now what ? She gets to keep her crown and he can keep his side piece? No thank you. This is not my definition of a happy marriage or a sacrifice I will ever make. However I am but a peasant. A peasant who values herself and believes that one’s husband or wife should be faithful to you and you alone and that my values and morals are not for sale regardless of how shinny the payment would be .

For a royal woman to maintain access to her children, I think it usually necessary to maintain the marriage. She’s making the best choice for her children.

    • Andy Dufresne says:

@over it, I agree with you!

However divorcing a cheating husband is probably not an easy solution. What if Mary’s situation is similar to Princess Charlene whereby she might lose custody of her kids after the divorce/separation? Mary’s son is heir to the Danish throne, so custody- wise, the decision will be on Fred’s favour.

    • Lulu says:

I give Mary more grace. She’s built this life for almost 2 decades and if she doesn’t want to walk away from it I respect her decision.

      • NotSoSocialB says:

I think this is the only answer. She has made her decision. I’m gonna assume that we don’t know what we don’t know. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Queen margrethe was there actually. And i find it hilarious that these British tabs are so eager to talk about this alleged affair while they won’t touch upon william. While Fredrick having an affair is definitely news worthy it is not the affair i am most interested in.

She can keep her crown and get her own side piece. I love her fashion choices. Her colors are gorgeous.

    • Curmudgeon says:

I think it’s the same purple coat dress from Charles’ coronation? Great outfit. I’m loving all the posts about the Danish royals for the fashion alone – Mary’s style is probably my favourite of all her counterparts. Her daughters are both wearing her old coats which is very cute – makes me want to invest in better quality pieces that last a long time.

      • Lauren West says:

You’re right, this is a re-wear from Charles’ coronation just minus the veil on the hat. I was actually hoping this is what Mary would wear, its a great outfit in a very appropriate purple.

    • Lauren West says:

One of the more interesting rumors I’ve heard is that they have an open marriage and Mary has been having her own affair with a Danish politician.

  4. Becks1 says:

She looks great here – love the colors she’s wearing.

I don’t think QM would have made a decision as serious as abdicating bc of her son having an affair. But, I do think it might have influenced the timing – maybe she wanted to wait another year or something but decided to announce it/abdicate this year. I think we’ve seen her making moves over the past year or two that make more sense in the context of planning to abdicate.

    • Brassy Rebel says:

No, she wouldn’t abdicate over an affair. But if the affair or its revelation threatened the monarchy, she certainly would and it appears she did. There may be backstory we don’t know about.

  5. Brassy Rebel says:

As happy as she appears, it must have worked. Maybe a few kroner were thrown in for good measure. 🇩🇰

A bit off topic but is Mary wearing thermal/insulated tights/pantyhose? It’s snowing there and normal pantyhose are tissue thin, not for cold weather at all. As someone who lives where it gets cold in the winter and who runs cold as well, I’m dying to know how royal women dress for the cold.

    • Vik says:

Having the money for the best materials is how they do it.
I read that allegedly the guy who first climbed Mt Everest had a layer only 7mm thickness, which I can’t imagine. But he dressed in several layers consisting of wool and silk and those insulate and make you toasty warm. It is also essential that clothes aren’t skin tight, because it works by trapping and warming air, so at least 2 layers will always be warmer than a single layer.
She has the resources and money to have thin wool or silk tights (cotton doesn’t work in cold weather).
Though I do think they sometimes freeze for fashion’s sake, because I can’t imagine those shoes being comfy, warm or practical for that weather.

Edit: I think Mary’s feet are freezing, but the body is probably toasty. Her kids all look like they are not freezing, the trousers of her daughter sure work better than Mary’s shortish skirt.

  7. YeahRight says:

Getting divorced from an heir with children involved isn’t easy. Look at Diana she had to stick around the UK because of her children if she didn’t have them or if Willy and Harry were 18 then she would’ve left that place. Having kids with the heir doesn’t mean you can up and leave because the royals will dangle your children over you so sticking it out is probably in Mary’s best interest.

  8. Charfromdarock says:

I hadn’t noticed before but QM looks like Carrie Fischer.

  9. Iz_Q says:

Here is a tip – stick to the trashy BRF – the Danish royals are WAY out of the league of anyone on here. For many on here that claim to know NOTHING about the DRF all of sudden some of you surely have some sudden in-depth knowledge of all things Danish royals! And talk about selective reliance on royal rota – when it is about the Sussexes, it is all lies but other times they are the paragons of truth and accuracy. Some of you are just as bad as those you drag all the time. Like I said – stick to the BRF and their toxic mess. Leave the rest of the royals alone.

    • Becks1 says:

      🙄🙄🙄

    • Saucy&Sassy says:

Iz_Q, I agree. I read the article closely. This is just the opinion of someone who doesn’t know anything about the abdication. It’s speculation.

I believe that QM has been making moves to abdicate because of her health, and I wouldn’t be surprised if she understood that a younger royal couple is desired. All she had to do was look at the brf to know the pitfalls of hanging on to the bitter end.

I hope that QM will be able to do the things she really enjoys and that I’ve read she’s really good at. I hope that she’ll be doing more for the theater, etc. I also hope she lives a long life without excruciating pain.

    • Lauren West says:

I have also been disappointed at the willingness of some on this site to accept the narrative of the British media. Anyone who watches the DRF’s events could see that QM was still in considerable pain several months after returning from spinal surgery.

No idea what’s going on and don’t really care but love those blue gloves!!
