This is the new 50-second trailer for The Runaways, the film based on the early years of Joan Jett. Kristen Stewart was controversially cast as Joan Jett, and even more controversially, Kristen chopped off her “Bella hair” for the role. First, let me say this: this film looks cool. It looks hip and interesting, and it looks like the kind of rockin’ girl-power movie that would give Kristen Stewart a chance to stretch her acting muscles. In the fast clips, you see Kristen (“Joan”) being yelled at, and yelling, throwing bottles and being a hell raiser. Unfortunately, Kristen can’t go 50 seconds with falling into her well-publicized acting crutch, the lip-bite. It’s her go-to actorly movement when she needs to indicate an emotion. A few months ago, College Humor put together a hilarious montage of all of Kristen’s lip-biting throughout her films:

Other than the lip-biting thing, I will say again that the film looks great. Little Dakota Fanning, just 15 years old, plays Cherie Currie, lead singer of The Runaways. In the fast editing of the trailer, I caught sight of what I think is a barely-dressed Dakota, which might be sketchy. You know what else is strange? I just now noticed that with lots of makeup, in moody lighting, Dakota could totally pass for Diane Kruger – I actually thought it was Kruger in the film for a second. Dakota is also the one belting out “Cherry Bomb” by the way. Her voice kicks ass.

I have a sneaking suspicion that whenever the film comes out, people might pay more attention to Dakota than Kristen. Which might be fine with Kristen – from what I’ve read about their relationship, they’re very close friends, and they treat each other like sisters. But for now, it’s the Kristen Show. After saying some slightly mean stuff about Kristen’s casting a few months ago, Joan Jett is now singing Kristen’s praises, telling MTV: “She’s an actress of weight, honesty, integrity and depth, and she’s very serious. She takes it as art.” Let’s hope these girls do the story justice!
