Jack Antonoff: ‘It’s been a long time since I would’ve taken Kanye’s call’

It’s remarkable to think of Jack Antonoff’s unlikely trajectory to one of the music industry’s most in-demand producers and songwriters out there. It’s also remarkable to think that most of his decade-long win streak comes from his work with pop princesses like Taylor Swift, Lana del Rey, Lorde, St. Vincent and Florence Welch. Jack isn’t just a producer either – he’s friends with all of his ladies and he’s very much part of the gang. His work with Taylor alone just earned him his third producer-of-the-year Grammy in a row, and Taylor’s Midnights (produced by Jack) won Album of the Year. He’s got two big things coming out: he produced Taylor’s The Tortured Poets Department, and he’s gone back to his band Bleachers and they’re releasing a new album. He recently chatted with the LA Times about all of this and more. Some highlights:

He doesn’t like LA’s music industry vibe: Artists and producers “are expected to fly into all these rooms and mine the deepest parts of their soul, then throw it out there and go to the next one,” is “kind of bulls—. It’s not how good things are made. Great things are made by a small group of people yes-anding each other all the way to the moon.”

When he described Damon Albarn as a “herb.” It was after Albarn suggested in an interview with The Times that Swift doesn’t write her own songs. “I’m a little bitch sometimes. But you come after my friend Taylor, you’re toast to me.” Questioning Swift’s songwriting, he adds, “is like challenging someone’s faith in God. You just don’t go there.”

On Kanye West: He’s had harsh words for another of Swift’s antagonizers, Kanye West, whom he says “just needs his diaper changed so badly.” Does he ever think twice about roasting a well-known musician he might someday want to work with? “It’s been a long time since I would’ve taken Kanye’s call. I’m so incredibly bored when someone doesn’t have the sauce anymore, so they go elsewhere to shock. It’s just a remarkable waste of space.”

He’s also been working on Del Rey’s next LP, which she’s said will be a country album titled “Lasso.” “We’ve been cooking. It’s f—ing brilliant.” (Of the current country craze that’s also drawn Beyoncé and Post Malone toward the genre, Antonoff says, “The bubbling is about to blow — I feel it everywhere.”)

He’s about to turn 40: “To me, you express your age the way you express it. Look at Bob Dylan: ‘Rough and Rowdy Ways’ felt so bitchy and cool,” he says of Dylan’s 2020 album, “whereas when he was young he was being such a little poet.”

He wants kids with his wife: Antonoff wants to have children with Qualley, but he knows the demands of parenthood will fundamentally alter the life he’s built in music. “I see that as the next big shake-up. The first time in a while I’ll be doing something I have no idea how to do.”

[From The LA Times]

“It’s been a long time since I would’ve taken Kanye’s call. I’m so incredibly bored when someone doesn’t have the sauce anymore.” F–king brutal and true. Like, we can debate Jack’s work and yeah, it gets repetitive when you listen to the stuff he produced for Lana and Taylor back-to-back, but Jack knows what he’s f–king doing and he’s got his finger on the pulse of pop music. He has relevancy in a way Kanye simply doesn’t have anymore. Kanye is worse than a has-been, to the point where someone like Jack has no qualms about making sure everyone knows that he does not f–k with Kanye.

As for what he said about Albarn… Albarn has been a full curmudgeon for years now, I remember when he had sh-t to say about Adele too. Of all the criticisms to make about Taylor, don’t try to say that she’s not writing her songs. Sometimes I wish she would actually work with a lyricist just to give her music some maturity, because she’s going to be in her 50s and still writing songs about high school, but I digress. She actually writes those songs.

Man, it feels like his relationship with Lena Dunham was a million years ago…..
On that note, did Lena and Taylor have a falling out that I missed? Was it because of Antonoff?

RE: Kanye. He’s worked hard to alienate himself from both the music industry and his fanbase so I’m not surprised at Antonoff’s comments. The man just cannot stop self-sabotaging and it’s sad AF to watch for those of us who used to be fans.

    • Slush says:

someone will have to educate me on the timeline here because I truly loathed Girls so I steer clear of anything Lena – is it possible Taylor was only friends with Lena bc of Jack, and when they broke up, that was that on the friendship?

      • Kitten says:

        I shamefully watched Girls mostly–ok, completely–because of Driver 🙁
But yes it does seem like their friendship was more because of Jack than anything else but maybe some knowledgeable Swifties can clear this up for us?

      • VoominVava says:

Lena lived in the UK when Taylor lived with Joe, and Taylor was in Lena’s wedding to a british musician a few years ago. I would think they just don’t live in the same country anymore so they don’t see much of each other?

I do wonder about Lorde and Taylor’s relationship .. It feels like Taylor sort of swooped in and took ownership of Antonoff after he made some fantastic music with Lorde. I even felt a bit of a Lorde-ish tone with her first Antonoff collaboration album.
I love Antonoff and think he’s super talented and seems like a cool guy. I also love how supportive and collaborative he is with mostly female musicians. They all seem to feel safe and supported with him.

  2. Slush says:

Kanye’s not only looking to shock us for attention, the treatment of his new wife is just sexual abuse IMO. Making her “dress” so that she’s basically naked, having to cover her vag with her phone.

    He’s really vile.

    • VoominVava says:

THIS! He disgusts me. Mind you, I was never a fan because he always gave me the ICK, he is just so miserable and controlling. I know a lot of it is mental health issues, but he’s also just an asshole. The way he treats his wife is disgusting. It seems like such a demeaning relationship .. I think if he wants her to parade around half naked then he should do it too. She’s in a thong and a clear raincoat and he’s covered up right to the top of his head.

      • Third comment says:

Maybe his wife is an exhibitionist. None of you, nor I, know her, and it’s not like she’s some naive 18 year old. She’s a 30-something year old mature woman with an impressive career and
I think we really infantilize her when we treat her like some sex trafficked teenager. We don’t know her and so we really cannot purport to know her real feelings about prancing around almost naked. She could very well be into it.

  3. sevenblue says:

I think, Jack is Jewish? It would be weird if he wanted to work with an outspoken antisemite. I wonder why the interviewer didn’t make a point of this.

  4. Amanda says:

Ummm…Taylor’s songs have definitely matured. I don’t think it’s fair to say she’s still writing songs about high school.

    • Tara says:

I completely agree and came here to say the same thing.

    • Lisa says:

Exactly, people should actually listen to them before they make these comments.

    • VoominVava says:

Agreed! I think if people are going to be writing about a topic, they need to study it. Same with music. If you want to state or form an opinion on an album, maybe listen to the whole thing. Midnights was a great album (with a few songs referencing the subject’s youth in there for sure but they were a full story to show where they have grown to the moment the song was written) with some really thoughtful, mature lyrics and messages.
I didn’t listen to folklore and evermore when they came out over the pandemic as I thought they were too moody and I was already depressed. But I’ve revisited them and there are some incredible songs on there too. Champagne Problems is a perfect song. Just fantastic … My Tears Ricochet is so damn clever and beautiful. “If I’m dead to you, why are you at the wake?” Is one of my favourite song lines of all time.

My friend in Italy just took her daughter to one of his concerts in Bologna, I was shocked he even had concerts anymore. (I truly hope the daughter gets better taste in music soon) I guess he and his wife were also refused service at a restaurant in Milan due to their shocking attire. There were videos circulating but it really hasn’t made news in the states that I’ve seen. How his wife dresses (or doesn’t dress) in public is very unsettling for everyone including the general public imo.

    • kif says:

I think its due to HER shocking attire. He is always fully clothed while she is in various states of undress to titillate, call attention, shock. He cannot even do it himself but has to use a woman (as he dressed Kim when they were married). This is not about a woman’s agency. He is using her as an accessory. As @Slush said in the comment above – this is sexual abuse.

  6. Lizzie Bathory says:

Whew. His take on Kanye is so accurate–the man is just existing on outrage fumes at this point.

I’m not a pop music person, but I can appreciate how much he seems to care about artists & creating good work.

  7. Miss617 says:

Forget what he has to say about Taylor’s detractors, I really want to know what happened between him and Lorde. They made one of the greatest records of all time together, set the rumor mill ablaze about a potential affair, then four years later they make a massive pile of garbage, and then she books a leg of festival appearances in Europe for the same weekend as his wedding. Is Margaret threatened by her? Apparently she’s replaced Jack with Dev Hynes (Blood Orange) for her upcoming record.

  8. Lisa says:

Taylor isn’t writing about high school, her music is mature. In her last album she wrote about miscarriages, being groomed, self doubt, realizing that maybe you gave away a good life because you wanted something different.

If you mean the new songs in the re-records from “the vaults” well she wrote those whenever the album came out so of that age.

People do need to actually listen to her work. This she is immature but they only know the stuff she wrote as a 15 year old is a bit embarrassing for the commenter. .

And Jack is spot on about Kanye.

    • Third comment says:

Why is it embarrassing for the other commenter to only know the stuff Taylor Swift did when she was 15?? Not everyone is a fan and/or follows her music, I personally can’t stand Taylor Swifts music and off the top of my head can probably only name some of her very first hits and I am not in the SLIGHTEST bit embarrassed by it.

Also, I can’t help but wonder if Antonoff is simply enjoying the hell out of becoming as famous as he has, (he was definitely not a household name with Lena Dunham. And didn’t Margaret Qually just RECENTLY date Shia La’Bouef??) and his over the top defense of Swift reminds me of that of a loner kid in high school who has suddenly been befriended by the most popular kid in school, and is like, all GRATEFUL to the popular kid for “elevating” them.

  9. MY3CENTS says:

Those suits are hideous, and unflattering.

    • Christine says:

Has he ever been about wearing anything trendy? He looks like every man I have ever known who doesn’t want to wear a suit, but sometimes begrudgingly puts one on.

  10. JC says:

I love Kanye. I don’t care. And I love how people are so disturbed by him.

    • kif says:

Don’t worry. A lot of people love Trump, too. They don’t care and especially love, love – practically lives for it, that he disturbs people. In spite of the abusing of women, the crimes, the graft, etc. etc . . . You’re in “good” company.

      • Slush says:

LOL very much this kif. What I love is watching someone self-own while acting like they’ve really proved something.

  11. Eden75 says:

I only heard my first Taylor Swift song a couple of weeks ago, so I can’t comment on her music. It’s not my thing, so I will trust those in the know. I appreciate the woman’s business suave and that she does write her own stuff. Good on her.

I never did understand the appeal of Kanye. Again, not really my music but there are several artists in the genre that I know and can appreciate, he is not one of them. I’m not sure what happened to him over the years, whether he is ill and it has been a slow march to this or if it’s for the exposure but I do know that he needs to be told to sit down and shut up. Someone get his wife a coat while they are at it. That woman needs a Katie Holmes level of rescue.

  12. Lola says:

His comments about Kanye make me feel the need to point out the ominous misogyny of conservatorships. The time when men could get their wives locked up in a mental institution for life or even lobotomized, because they wanted to take over her money or take a new wife, is still within living memory. Meaning, there are people still alive who recall the time when men could and did do that, legally, and women had no recourse. Britney Spears spent the majority of her adult life and reproductive years under one, it took the public scrutiny of millions of people to get her out of it, and even now, people still say she should go back under one because of things like how she dances in her own house and the kind of attire she wears or doesn’t wear.

MEANWHILE, Kanye West gets to parade around nonstop showing off the fact that he is not only out of his f*****g mind, but that he can hurt and abuse others in any bizarre fashion he pleases and never answer to it. Ranging from his constant public sexual abuse of his “wife,” all the way to threating to go “death con” on Jews and everything else he has said and done. He’ll never get put under a conservatorship because they aren’t about wanting the best for the mentally ill. They’re about the exploitation and control of women.

  13. Libra says:

Off topic. Love the talented Margaret Qually. She was so good in Fosse as well as her other roles.
