Millie Bobby Brown’s fiance proposed underwater and almost lost the ring

Millie Bobby Brown is a 20-year-old powerhouse who is engaged to Jon Bon Jovi’s son, Jake. Millie and Jake appear to have a healthy, drama-free relationship, although they do have the traditional disagreement over Christmas trees. While Millie and Jake may be a lowkey couple, their engagement story is anything but. And boy, is it a story. During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show, MBB, joined by her adorable dog, Winnie the Poodle, recounted what happened when Jake proposed to her. It involves deep sea diving and a ring that almost went the way of the Heart of the Ocean.

Jake Bongiovi’s underwater proposal to Millie Bobby Brown nearly went very south. Brown shared the “crazy story” with Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show” Thursday. The “Stranger Things” star announced her engagement to Bongiovi, the son of musician Jon Bon Jovi, in April last year.

Brown said she and Bongiovi had bonded over diving and got their diving licenses together, prompting his decision to propose to her under the sea.

“We were on vacation and he was like ‘Mill, you gotta be up at 8 a.m., we’re going on a dive,’” she said. “So we go under, and we’re like many meters down, and he … gives me like a shell, and I like turn it over, and it’s a ring.”

Unable to speak underwater, Brown said she struggled to communicate that she was saying yes. He put the ring on her finger, and she tried to show it to him on her hand.

“As I go to show him, the ring falls off my finger. Plummets, like so fast. It was like a cinematic movie,” she continued. She said Bongiovi “threw himself” into the deep in pursuit.

“The diver was like, ‘You can’t do that,’ like your ears ― you literally, your brain will explode,” she said. “He does a cinematic, like, grab, opens, and he saved the ring.”

She said she felt the moment was a reflection of who he is, “and I feel like we’re always gonna have each other’s back, and if anyone drops the ball, we got it.”

When they surfaced, Brown said, her fiancé explained that he had asked for her mom’s ring, but Brown’s mom had said “absolutely not,” predicting he would drop it.

He gave her that ring above the surface.

That story is wild! I know Millie may have been slightly exaggerating the whole he plunged down after it so fast that his “brain will explode” part but I do believe he went and grabbed it. The adrenaline he must have tapped into, my goodness. Her mom was definitely wise not to let him use her ring. It’s a great story for late night TV and she’s very funny when she tells it. Also, now I literally cannot stop hearing the dialogue portion from “Oops I Did It Again” in my head. “Well, baby, I went down and got it for you.”

I love hearing people’s engagement stories! I almost ruined mine. When Mr. Rosie was going to propose to me, I was supposed to visit my sister in London the following day. My flight got canceled as we were on our way to the restaurant where he planned to propose, so I was on hold with the airline, trying to reschedule it. I was still on hold when we got there. That wasn’t the worst part for him. I didn’t know it was coming, so I changed restaurants right before we left. When we walked into the new one, his parents were there! As I was still on hold with the airline, we said hello to them and his mom said, “I just want you to know that we really like you and if you choose to join this family, we know you’ll fit right in.” Needless to say, Mr. Rosie almost passed out on the spot lol. The restaurant portion was so stressful that he ended up not proposing there. Instead, he did it when we got back to our apartment. This isn’t as fun as almost losing an engagement ring to Davy Jones’ Locker, but I still said yes and at least now there’s a new bar for stressful proposals.

  1. My future husband (now husband). Went ring shopping together because he wanted me to pick it out. So we did and he planned to give it to me when it was ready at our favorite restaurant. So I got to the restaurant first and he was late. He finally arrived and we ordered dinner and he says to will you marry me? The store was closed so he couldn’t pick up the ring and he handed me the money for the ring lol.

I was proposed with a …bracelet. It was made of gold and had 3D little hearts. It was cute (the bracelet). The guy “loved” me and wanted me to understand that it was an engagement thingy. The problem was that I had just learned that he had cheated on me with another girl. So I gave the bracelet back through a friend as I didn’t trust myself to behave. His justification for the cheating: I hadn’t accepted to have sex with him so he took his revenge like that, multiple times, with other girls (yes plural, that was news to me). We were 19. Needles to say we never got married and never had sex together.
