Cut Avatar sex scene will be included in DVD, script is online

Star Zoe Saldana has confirmed that a “sex scene” was cut from box office juggernaut Avatar, probably to ensure a PG-13 rating. She described the scene recently and it sounds just like the scenario in which the Návi pacify by the flying banshee creatures by melding the tentacles from their tails. (Those scenes, to quote a review I can’t find again, were somewhat “rapey”.) Director James Cameron recently put the entire script online, and you can read the deleted scene. (In an image below.) It’s not that racy and sounds less worthy of an R rating than any of the violent scenes. It’s a shame that some simulated alien sex using tails as genitals is considered more offensive than people killing each other and blowing things up. Here’s Saldana’s explanation of the way the Návi do the deed:

Zoe Saldana: If you sync to your banshee and you’re syncing to a tree, why not sync into a person? I almost feel like you’ll have the most amazing orgasm, I guess. It was a very funny scene to shoot because there were so many technical things that sometimes you have to keep in mind that paying attention to all those might disrupt the fluidity of how a scene is supposed to take place.

And because Jim was shooting for a PG-13 rating, we couldn’t move in certain directions. The motion would look a little too past the PG-13 rating standards. So it was really funny for Sam and me. We had a lot of giggles there.

We had it in and we cut it out. So that will be something for the special edition DVD, if you want to see how they have sex.

The scene reads kind of cheesy in the screenplay (below) but they surely made it fit well with the rest of the film. As moving and amazing as Avatar was there was that undercurrent of schmaltz. Cameron skirted a fine line between laying it on too thick and creating a compelling story that transported you to another world. He succeeded brilliantly, in my opinion. After finally seeing Avatar yesterday I have to say that I’d easily go see it a couple more times in the theater and I never do that. Many people agree with me. Avatar has surpassed box office records to quickly become the top grossing film of last year and the second highest worldwide grossing film of all time.

That reads really cheesy and stupid…but the whole movie was sort of like that like you said so…ick.

  2. GatsbyGal says:

I keep hearing about the odd tail-rape of things in this movie. Just kinda makes me wanna see it more, frankly.

I can almost hear the frantic clicks of fanfic writers’ keyboards all across the country.

Smurf sex- what a turn on.

  4. Dingles says:

    *reads screenplay, nods decisively*

    Human sex is way better.

  5. Dorothy says:

I loved the movie!!! But I do think the Lord of the Ring trilogy was better!

  6. No Sensi says:

This is what the DVD has to offer? Blue 3d sp@nk?!

  7. LolaBella says:

@GatsbyGal: Hey there, nothing wrong with a little fanfic! 😉

I haven’t seen Avatar as yet and will wait to see it on DVD which will more than likely contain the deleted ‘tail rapey’ scene.

OT: Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington are hot…maybe if the sex scene was of them in human form…

I have seen Avatar, and it was a very pretty movie. The colors and special f/x were amazing.

As for the deleted sex scene, I am sure the film is better without it. I am not that interested in seeing what the Na’vi do behind closed doors.

I saw the movie. I found it to be political. Yes, visually arresting as well. It doesn’t need the scene or to be any longer.

  10. Hellen says:

    “explore each other,” “spent”…

    People still write like that??

  11. Firestarter says:

This is getting out of hand:

(CNN) — James Cameron’s completely immersive spectacle “Avatar” may have been a little too real for some fans who say they have experienced depression and suicidal thoughts after seeing the film because they long to enjoy the beauty of the alien world Pandora.

    WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE??

  12. Praise St. Angie! says:

Firestarter, when I read that article on people being depressed “to the point of being suicidal”, I thought the exact same thing. Also agree on the scene being deleted. The movie was fine without it and it’s clear that the two of them “mated”.

Lola, if you have a chance, I def recommend seeing on the big screen. I was also going to wait for DVD, but the bf INSISTED that we see it in the theater, and I was NOT disappointed.

  13. dizzybenny says:

the movie is in a nut shell is a western wraped in $400 million CGI.
a white guy comes to save the natives against the evil white army, because in the future they will be no blacks according to Mr. Cameron.
so an added ”sex” scene will not make me buy this piece of junk!

  14. Daniel says:

Ugh! this will make me NOT want to buy the DVD, lol!

Just found your site through yahoo. Glad I found it I’ve learned a lot.

I didn’t particularly see what was pretty clearly implied in the cinema version, but hey.

I loved Avatar. It’s Pocahontas in Space, but UNBELIEVABLY PRETTY Pocahontas in Space. I just wish they’d given a leeeetle more attention to characterisation and especially dialogue, as the cheese was strong in large parts of it…
