Jennifer Lopez: trying too hard or fabulous at 40?

Scott Barnes' About Face Book Launch Party

Here is Jennifer Lopez, who was attending a book party for About Face written by one of her makeup artists, Scott Barnes. Jennifer is also the cover model for the book, and she wrote the forward. Fancy! When I saw these photos, my first thought was “Jennifer looks pretty good, mother of God is that a miniskirt?” My second thought was “Tan lines, diva!” And now all I can see are the tan lines on Jennifer’s chest. Perhaps she should have gotten a makeup artist to blend in the skin tone a little? Rookie mistake, diva.

But beyond the tan line quibble, I do think Jennifer looks good. Since everyone seems to be on a “Fabulous at 40” kick this week, I’ll say that Jennifer’s body is still kickin’ and that she’s rocking that miniskirt. Should miniskirts be left to younger girls? Well, personally, I don’t care for miniskirts on anyone (I’m always afraid of a vadge attack), but I think miniskirts should just be left to those with the legs to pull it off, and Jennifer fits that bill.

By the way, does anyone think Jennifer is Botoxing? I didn’t think so in some of the other photos of Jennifer we’ve had the past few months, but she’s looking particularly waxy and a touch frozen in some of these photos. Maybe she’s just trying to remember how to make her “DIVA” face.

she does seem to be straining to be hot and it’s wearing thin. she should drop the career moves and focus on family.
there’s far too many younger women who can do whatever she does much much better.
find a cause, Jen — and give something back. Stop being such a selfish snit.

  2. bella says:

Umm, yeah, I think she’s botox-ing. And “Fabulous at 40” yes, in this dress. Desperate, yes, in the rest of her attempts to stay relevant.

  3. lrg says:

I’m not a huge fan of Jennifer Lopez, but I think she looks great!

  4. Annabelle says:

    Terrible hair!

  5. Schwety says:

Just throw on your Louboutins and walk away from the limelight, you hasbeen

  6. EMV says:

She needs to stop wearing those skirts…too short! They certainly aren’t flattering. She does look good, but who wouldn’t with that amount of money to help out, ie. just about every celeb man or woman.

  7. sara says:

she looks Fab, love that look and no i don’t think she does botox, there is a bunch of pix of her laughing at this even and everything seem to be moving lol

  8. mik says:

She’s still beautiful. I think we should give her a break already. She seems to have humbled a bit.

  9. kermit says:

She looks nice, the pics are pixelated. 40 is an artificial line, nothing that significant happens at 40. It’s like 38 or 42. Mid 40s is more significant. She’s a mother of twins, so her body has changed in some ways. Hair is light mid strands. I like natural hair color and not the lightening as you get older trend.

  10. Enonymous says:

Jennifer Lopez is a latina women so why does she always insist on wearing fake tan. Natural is always best girl. And that constant posing and pouting and making sexy faces to the camera needs to stop because she does not pull it off well without looking unnatural and forced.

  11. Really? says:

She does look great in the dress, but really, the two toned hair and the furry eyebrows. Yuck. Not to mention the orange base of her makeup and that pale pink lip gloss. JLo has turned into JNo.

  12. Toe says:

If u are 40 or 50 and you have the legs (Tina Turner), why not? . She looks FAB.

  13. Brooke says:

I didn’t read this article but she deffo tries too hard. Relevance check!

  14. lucy2 says:

Her whole career has been her trying too hard. She’s not that great an actress or a great singer, but keeps pushing on forward. To a point it’s admirable, but she’s beyond that point and is now kind of annoying.

  15. marge says:

    Trying too hard.
She could totally look 40 AND great, but first has to assume her age.

And not all latinas are naturally tanned… I’m so pale that you can totally see my blood cells streaming through my arms.

  16. Ana says:

I was going to say “tries to hard” but I actually like her here. The dress fits decently. Not a big fan of the hair but othwerwise thumbs up.

  17. QB says:

Love the shoes but the dress does not look good on her , her hair is not looking that fabulous and is weird because because her hair was always fabulous.

Jlo is a pop star , not a soprano . If she wants to hang with the 20 year old she needs to find a new look because this is not a good one or she should change career.

For a 40 year old mom of twins she looks great but lets cut the crap she is not a regular person this is a celebrity that is known for her looks and that build her career on it so to keep it going she needs to meet certain standars.

Is like models , your work is your looks , so don’t bitch when people call you out on gaining weight or having cellulites on your ass when you are parading your ass in a catwalk and I don’t feel bad for it and people should not feel bad for them. You work on your craft and their craft is looking good.

  18. GatsbyGal says:

She’s definitely botoxing or something similar, and those heels are like WOAH, way too high. I guess she’s wearing them to keep her legs flexed and taut, but damn…ouch. She’s almost on her tiptoes.

  19. Maritza says:

Thank goodness she is not doing the puckered lip look anymore, it was so annoying! She does look beautiful but that short is way to short, it makes her look desperate for attention.

  20. Cinderella says:

Definitely trying to hard. Not botoxing but certainly spackling on the foundation.

Her pout is ridiculous. Her glue-on eyebrow wisps are crazy. Her wig is busted. She needs to remove it from her collection asap. Her legs in no way resemble Tina’s, so bring that hem down about a foot.

I think she is throwing herself out there because if her career doesn’t revive soon, someone’s headed for the block…as in auction block.

  21. marie says:

She looks fine. You are nitpicking to find something wrong with her. I don’t care much for her new music but she looks good here.

  22. bigelle says:

she looks ungroomed and uncomfortable in that dress. Shame she isn’t confident enough to move onto a new stage in her life/closet.

  23. Oenix says:

The thing I most dislike is when celebrities want to maintain the image they had 10, 15, 20 years ago. What happens to growth? Personal and professional? Like branch out and do something that reflects your age, experience/wisdom acquired. Why still trying to pull the scarlet look and attitude? What’s the point of acquiring all this wealth and fame and look/act like you’re still trying to make it? She should be an old pro by now?

  24. bite me says:

i guess only rachel from friends can be fablous at 40… La Lopez looks fab

  25. LolaBella says:

I think JLo looks good. She just needs to accept the fact that in the eyes of the public her heyday was in the early 2000s. She is not that age anymore and trying to dress/act like it just makes her look a bit desperate and sad NOT sexy or edgy as she hoped it would.

  26. nAynAy says:

She looks good, but I think she’s trying way too hard. She wasn’t that great to begin with.

  27. andrea says:

well, i think J.Lo is “fabulous at 40” (whatever that means) and that she’s been trying too hard since she was, i dunno, 12? i just think it’s an ugly outfit.

  28. MaiGirl says:

She is looking better than she has recently, but people aren’t particularly interested in buying what she’s selling, since the expiration date has already passed. It isn’t her age that’s the problem, it’s that she has nothing new or interesting going on. Tons of other stars are just as fit and pretty, if not more so. She needs to find a new way to stay relevant, since this ain’t it!

  29. snowball says:

I don’t know who said it, but I always thought it was a good adage – wear a low cut neckline, a low cut back or a mini mini skirt. Pick one and only one.

Strapless push-up uncomfortably tight micro minis really are for different body types than hers. Her legs are pretty muscular looking, but they look a little stubby, which I guess explains the skyscraper heels.

As for the face.. she looks different somehow, but my face changed a bit after I had kids too. She may have done some botox though, she does look a little waxy.

She needs less orange makeup and fake tans and darker lipstick in the right shade. And do something about that fried hair!

  30. Sumodo says:

Did you see her on George Lopez Live? She was hot AND telling jokes. Any of you out there currently doing THAT? (*crickets*) I didn’t think so.

  31. bite me says:

La Lopez should host a late show

  32. guest says:

    trying waaaay to hard…

  33. dando says:

she definitely uses Botox. Im not a fan but I think she looks great.

  34. benny says:

She’s too old for that skirt, which makes her look pathetic. If she admits her age and dresses appropriately, she can look wonderful. But she doesn’t.

By way of example, suppose a woman is a size 6. If she wears a size 6 dress, she looks great. But she insists on wearing a size 2 dress, so she looks hideous.

Jennifer is 40. If she dressed like a 40-year old, she would look great. But she dresses like a 20-year old and looks hideous.

  35. amanda says:

Something “yesterdays news” about this chick. She does not look fresh at all Whenever I see her I am reminded of the Latin pop-music trend centered around her and Ricky Martin circa 1999.

  36. Tru says:

She is doing herself in, she has been hanging w/Kim KarTRASHian, so its all down hill from here..

they are new BFF’s–so she had to try to outdo Kim’s plastic-ness, not to be out-shone by a reality trick..

JLO you are better than them, age is nothing but a number.

  37. Solveig says:

She has the most beautiful features in Hollywood IMO, but unfortunately she looks unstylish and hick.
Seems that her face isn’t frozen with botox, latin people have often a great skin.

  38. Cindy says:

It’s a no win situation you look like jennifer garner and they call you old and frumpy and you look like jennifer lopez and they say you are trying too hard, what’s wrong with trying too hard, she looks fab.

  39. mouth.like.a.sailor says:

actually, i like the dress. i think it’s a little daring, but it’s not too young, it’s a sophisticated mini-if there is such a thing i guess.

it seems like maybe she is going for a Kate Hudson sort of look with the hair and the short little dress and stuff. the hair isn’t really doing it for me, i think it’s just the color tho- if it was her normal dark i think it would have looked FABULOUS cuz it would have really complimented the stone detailings on the dress.

…now that New Years Eve outfit is a totally different story….. yikes.

  40. Sakota says:

“It’s a no win situation you look like jennifer garner and they call you old and frumpy and you look like jennifer lopez and they say you are trying too hard, what’s wrong with trying too hard, she looks fab.”

It’s the industry they’re in. It’s about looks, not being your own person, and being criticized. Their job is dependent largely on looks and if they don’t have that, talent.

  41. thepickle says:

She’s supposed to try hard, that’s what she gets paid for.

  42. Tia C says:

She’s definitely botoxing, but she doesn’t look as waxy as others. She looks great for her age. I agree with lucy2 that her whole career has been trying too hard, but we could probably say that about almost any celebrity. Guess she just wears her heart on her sleeve more than most.

  43. Cheyenne says:

She looks damn good, but that dress is ridiculous. At 40, you know you’ve got it, and it isn’t necessary to flaunt it.

  44. Dhavy says:

Ok so she has a good body but anyone with that much money will look good too

I guess she can’t accept the fact that she’s aging like the rest of the world (boo hoo)

She’s another Aniston, hanging on to her the last string of her youth because that’s when they were popular

If she was that good to begin with, she wouldn’t be trying this hard to stay afloat. She looks ridiculous, she should take lessons from Demi Moore, she’s older and she’s managed to look good without having to dress like a twenty year old

  45. anon says:

I doubt any of you cows look better than her. Also, you are going to be “old” sooner than you think and you are going to like hell because you were ugly to begin with. Forty isn’t old. One person said she would look good if you factor in her age. That’s just nothing but hating. She isn’t dressing like a 20 year old. She is dressing like a thin person who can afford it.

  46. lisa says:

I think it has something to do with the name..

Jennifer.. all of them have some kind of problem. I get confused when someone says Jennifer..Which one are they talking about.
JLO is a Diva.. has always been. so she is doing what she had been doing for years.. But I agree with another comment.. Jenny Aniston does not own Fabulous at 40.. but hey People Mag gave her a different title.. Flirty at 40.. so maybe JLO can now be FAB at 40.. Plus she is a mom of 2..

Her body looks great after carrying twins. Some people have never carried kids. And they should be fit. especially since they don’t have to run around with children.

She was really cute and funny on George’s show.. I can’t wait for her movie.. The Backup Plan.. looks cute.. but I’m just judging by the trailer

  47. Tobie says:

Basically all that can be said about JLO these days is that “she looks good for a 40-year old mother of twins”, but that is getting so old, especially since she’s seeking fame and success as a “popstar” and a “movie star”, and her good looks sure hasn’t pushed her latest music on top of the charts, and it remains to be seen how her next movie “The Backup Plan” comes out.

  48. Seer says:

Those shoes look painful! I bet you when she took them off that night, she just went “aaaaaahh…”

I’m glad she doesn’t like those absurd anorexic women, but makes muscles and being in shape sexy.

Also, while she’s not a classic beauty, she’d VERY sexy (and she knows it and she exploits it.)

I’m not a fan of JLo, but she does like better than those stick figures lurking around these days that look like concentration camp surivors. HOW can people find that appealing??? 20 years from now (or maybe sooner), Hollywood will be making news about “remember the days when celebrities had to look like skeletons? How disgusting!” Indeed.

  49. vasculitis symptoms says:

I’m not good with computer just learning I hope this is the right place to leave my message. RE; Your urticaria treatment, the first two weeks showed little improvement in my urticaria, however by the third week of using your information my urticaria symptoms appear to be getting better (less frequant). I’m very pleased and look forward to even better results to come.
