VF: Prince Harry wants to hire a PR expert to rehabilitate his image in the UK?

I missed this story last week, but it’s got a few pieces of “news,” to me at least. Katie Nicholl at Vanity Fair wrote about Prince Harry’s birthday, and Nicholl was one of the few royalists to actually get quotes from people saying sh-t like “Harry’s really happy in California, he has no desire to ‘go back’ to that island.” Which feels notable, because many of us can sense that is the truth of the matter, a truth which many British reporters refuse to acknowledge. But then Nicholl adds something I haven’t heard before: Harry is looking to hire a PR person in Britain. The hell? Some highlights from VF:

Harry’s low-key b-day. “Harry is quite low-key when it comes to celebrating his birthday,” says one close friend. “This will be a special occasion, but not over-the-top and with the people he really counts as close friends.”

Happier than ever: [Despite leaving the firm] the Duke of Sussex is “happier than ever,” according to those who know him best. “He feels he has ticked all the boxes: He’s married, he’s a dad, he’s living the life he always wanted to live away from the media at home, and he’s really happy,” says the close friend. “He and Meg are really content, the relationship is good, and he loves how they are raising their kids in the sunshine and without too much pressure.”

Making peace with his father & brother? But Harry’s new life has come at a price. The prince remains estranged from his father, King Charles, and his brother, the Prince of Wales. “The problem is that the trust has been broken. The king and the Prince of Wales worry any private conversations with Harry could be leaked,” says a former courtier. “Charles is keen to keep the door open for Harry so that they can see more of him and his grandchildren, but as for William, that’s going to take a lot more time.”

Harry’s never coming back: Following Charles’s cancer diagnosis, Harry has hinted that he wants to repair the relationship with his father, but reports that he is keen to return to Britain are wide of the mark. “He misses his father and the close relationship he had with his brother, but I get the impression he’s relieved to be away from some of the toxicity that came with being in the royal family. He’s living a simpler life now and, I would say, a happier one,” the former courtier continues. And despite recent reports about the prince wanting to return to royal duties, sources close to Harry say he has no intention of resuming his official royal role, while those close to the Prince of Wales insist it would not be an option.

He’s looking to hire someone in the UK: However, rumors that Harry is looking to recruit a high-profile individual in the UK to help with the rehabilitation of his public image are correct, with Harry taking advice from various sources.

[From Vanity Fair]

In March, the Telegraph announced that the Sussexes had already hired a UK-based public relations executive to hold down the fort in British and European media relations, one would assume. That might explain the slight shift in how the Sussexes have been covered over there – there’s more pushback in real time, more denials from the Sussex camp when someone makes a particularly egregious claim. So is Nicholl confused? Is she saying that Harry wants to hire someone else, in addition to the UK-based person they already have? Or is she conflating?

“Sources close to Harry say he has no intention of resuming his official royal role, while those close to the Prince of Wales insist it would not be an option.” In fact, sources close to William have constantly insisted to anyone who will listen that Harry is just dying to come back and do William’s work but William is simply too angry and incandescent to allow Harry to come back. Harry’s constant refrain is: it would be nice to visit a few times a year to see my family and do some charity work. That has broken William’s brain and Charles’s brain too.

Is the guy Harry hired to do his comms in Britain still there? For some reason, I feel like I read that he wasn’t still working for them? Or am I getting him confused with someone else? Either way, imo, idk it feels like a useless endeavor. The tabs are so huge there and they’re not going to relent on their campaign against Harry. But maybe I just being too cynical?

The chief of staff no longer works for Harry but trust me the minute the comms person in the UK leaves the British press will tell us. So he’s still there.

    • Saucy&Sassy says:

Jais, I though he had someone for comms in Britain, too. Is this who she’s talking about? I can’t for the life of me figure out why Harry would need a PR person there. Really?

      • Amy Bee says:

@Saucy&Sassy: The comms person deals with press in the UK and Europe and reports to the Head office in the US. It makes sense given the time difference and the constant barrage of emails they get from the UK press. It’s good to have somebody who knows the media landscape in the UK.

      • Jais says:

Having a comms person there makes sense to me but I don’t think that’s necessarily the same thing as a pr person? But I also don’t think Nichols knows anything😂

      • Amy Bee says:

@Jais: Katie is the same person who said Harry first saw Meghan on Suits. She’s not a reliable reporter.

  2. Amy Bee says:

I think Katie is fudging the truth since as Kaiser points out a UK based comms person has already been hired for months now. Furthermore she’s still pushing these Palace myths that Harry leaks to the press and that he had a close relationship with his brother. Katie like the rest of the British press, has no information about Harry. She knows as much as I do.

Karie N has no sources with H&M. She’s just making up stuff again based on other reporting. VF should be embarrassed for paying for it.

Since Harry was NEVA close with William and he ALREADY gave the rules of engagement his Father & Brother has to do…said it out his OWN mouth…I think this is more fanfic

As soon as I saw the headline above I knew it would be a Katie Nicholl piece. She is someone who can just make up stuff and be publicly oblivious to contradictory evidence. For example, she is the one who stated that Harry saw Meghan in suits and fell in love with her and wanted to meet her. She comes across as disarmingly upbeat and perky, and manages to fool a lot of people. It’s not hard to believe that Harry would have a Comms person on stand-by in the UK just to deal with the unbelievable shit that gets flung around by people like Katie. Some of the smears are downright dangerous, and not just misleading and demeaning. I mean, Harry realizes that the Rota creatures can’t be allowed to run completely amok without some checks. Harry has himself, his family, and his work to protect.

Katie Nicholl is the US version of Camilla T. #katienichollisaliar.

She talks out of both sides of her mouth. She went on all those UK TV shows pretending she’s a real Hollywood insider, expert, knowing all things Susex. She’s jealous of Duchess Meghan & a low-key racist without moral & integrity. Years ago she used illegally obtained materials from UK (hacking, blagging) in her reports. VF continues employing her just shows there’s few legitimate media left.

Betrayed his abusers… by leaving 🙄

Flipping the script is a good idea, he’s involved in international things and when there’s an entire country hell-bent on smearing him, it makes sense.

    • HeatherC says:

To abusers, that is the ultimate betrayal. The singular role that Harry was assigned at birth was to be the proverbial whipping boy for his father and brother, because they are the direct heirs and he is not. His sole function was to allow them to use and abuse him as they saw fit.

So when Harry left his designated role and moved on with his life, it has left the abusers flabbergasted. How could he? Doesn’t he know his place? How dare he?! To the abusers, they had put their trust and expectations that they would always have Good Ol’ Harry to kick around and then he removed himself from the situation.

She must an electricity bill to pay, or perhaps the rent.
