Colin Firth “feels complicit” in Hollywood’s homophobia

I’m still glowing that so many of my imaginary boyfriends got nominated for Oscars this morning! One of my favorites was Colin Firth’s nomination for Lead Actor, for his critically-acclaimed work in A Single Man, directed by first-time director Tom Ford. Can you believe this is Colin’s first Oscar nomination? He’s been in two Best Picture Oscar winners (The English Patient and Shakespeare In Love), but Colin has never gotten recognized for the big one before.

Before the nominations were announced, Colin admitted to a British publication that he was trying not to get “swept away” saying: “God knows…. I’m trying not to think about it. You don’t know how much you’ve vested in something until you have a disappointment. Years ago when I had a Bafta nomination in my mid twenties I was very blase and I didn’t go because I was filming at the time. I lost. I thought I was cool about it but I was absolutely shattered. I was astonished I was so shattered. I was very surprised. I’m getting on a bit and I’ve been up and down a few times. I’m too old to get swept away in it completely and I’ve had little enough experience of it to feel too jaded.” Once Colin heard that he got nominated, he told People Magazine: “I thought I was managing my expectations, but on hearing the news I discovered new and unfamiliar vocal tones. Perhaps I should do another musical.”

Meanwhile, Colin is still promoting the hell out of A Single Man. He and his wife Livia (in these photos) just attended the UK premiere of the film, and Colin is currently doing a round of interviews. Colin recently spoke out about the double standard that still exists for gay actors, and Colin humbly admitted to feeling “complicit” in the double standard:

The actor, who stars as George Falconer, a homosexual college professor, in A Single Man, said at the film’s UK premiere in central London that there are still ”invisible boundaries” that homosexual actors struggle to cross.

He said: ”There might be risks for a gay actor coming out. The politics of that are quite complex, it seems to me. If you’re known as a straight guy, playing a gay role, you get rewarded for that. If you’re a gay man and you want to play a straight role, you don’t get cast – and if a gay man wants to play a gay role now, you don’t get cast.”

”I think it needs to be addressed and I feel complicit in the problem. I don’t mean to be. I think we should all be allowed to play whoever – but I think there are still some invisible boundaries which are still uncrossable.”

Nicholas Hoult, the young British actor who has been nominated for the Bafta Rising Star Award, said he did not feel he was taking a risk by playing the role of student Kenny, who takes an interest in Firth’s character in the directorial debut of Tom Ford, a fashion designer.

”There was no fear [in taking the role],” said the 20-year-old. ”It was a very interesting character and when you get the chance to work with Colin and Tom, you’d be stupid to turn it down because you’re scared of playing a character who’s potentially gay.”

Ford joked that he had a ”crush” on Firth and Hoult and admired their acting abilities, tipping them both for awards success – with Firth expected to get an Oscar nod when the nominations are announced tomorrow.

He said: ”I have a crush on Nicholas but I have a crush on every actor in the film … I think as a director you have to have crushes on the people that you cast in your movie.”

[From The Telegraph]

Don’t you love him? I don’t agree with him 100%, but I know he has a significant point. However, Colin said it the right way, I think. Unlike someone like Rupert Everett, who just comes across like he’s whining and being a big, nasty, vicious prick. Colin comes across like he’s trying to stand up for his gay actor buddies. And you know he probably has a lot of gay friends. And they probably swoon over him, just like me!

*Le swoon* He’s gorgeous and conscientious. What else could one want in a man?

  2. Ally says:

“A Single Man” is one of the most boring and ineptly made movies I have ever seen. Tom Ford even managed to stifle Colin Firth’s charm under his blanket of slo-mo, black/white, and lighting effects nonsense. Add to that no sense of timing, storytelling or psychology. Colin Firth should only feel complicit in helping Ford make a terrible, pretentious failure of a movie.

  3. snapdragon says:

now that’s what i call a man. yummy!

  4. Carrie Thompson says:

    His wife is gorgeous!!!

This nomination makes me really happy- though Jeff Bridges probably has it locked up (and deservedly so, after all of the amazing performances he deserves the recognition) Colin Firth is amazing and deserves this long overdue recognition.

One thing I like about Colin is that he LOOKS like a MAN, a GUY; he’s not a revolting pretty boy.

Now, what was it my old British pal, Mary, used to say about her taste in men? Ah, yes, she claimed she wanted a man who had the brains of a Cambridge or Oxford scholar, and the body of a long-distance lorry driver! Sadly for her, the twain did not meet!

    Tea and crumpets time.

I totally forgot Colin Firth was in The English Patient! Ooooh, I loved that movie. I’ll have to rent it again to marvel at it all over again. Kristen Scott Thomas doesn’t get enough either. She was great in I’ve Loved You So Long.

I believe that Colin is going to win the Academy and Oscars Awards. He had worked very hard on this role and A Single Man is the best Drama movie. Although he has many talents and he is talented for many years. That’s why I love him.

  14. abbizmal says:

He’s so hot. Been in my top 5 for a long time. I’d hit it. 😀

  15. buckley says:

    What a handsome couple.
    Swoon indeed…

  16. Uzi says:

What a class act…as an actor and a human being! I’m so glad the Academy rewarded talented “good guys” like Colin, Jeff Bridges and George Clooney with nominations. We women need more men like these!

  17. Kim says:

I dont buy that gay men in Hollywood dont get hired esp. since majority of them are gay. Many are out but most are in the closet. If they dont like not getting roles because gay and are in closet i have no respect for them.

I dont lie about my sexuality to get more $/better job nor should they. If they believe being gay is ok then they should be open about it or it provides bad role model of people thinking there is a reason they are ashamed of it.

  18. Kim says:

He well deserves an Oscar. Maybe not for this role but hey we give token Oscars out every year. For his past work alone he deserves one.

  19. PJ says:

I saw “Single Man” last weekend and it was incredibly moving. Colin’s performance is amazing; he deserves an Oscar for it. He was in every scene in the movie and the part was very difficult.

It’s the best drama I’ve seen in I don’t know how many years.

  20. Ursula says:

I love this man. And he right about gay in Hollywood, nothing nice comes out of coming out.

  21. Phowie says:

If you really want a ‘FirthFest’ you have to watch his performance as Mr. Darcy in ‘Pride and Prejudice’. God, the scene where he walks out of the water in his wet breeches even the made the pond water boil!

On a less rapacious note, he has a point about the movies. Why was it in the film ‘In & Out’ Kevin Kline and Tom Selleck, two heterosexuals, played the 2 gay lead characters? Wasn’t it possible to actually cast 2 gay actors (if there are 2 who aren’t closeted)? Likewise for ‘Brokeback Mountain’, all aspersions about Toothy Tile aside. It seems like the only actual work for gay actors to play gay characters is to do caricatures of themselves. Even ‘To Wong Foo’, 3 great roles. Okay, I loved that movie and Swayze, Snipes and Leguziamo were wonderful, but as long as the studios feel that the public is homophobic the closets in Hollywood will remain firmly shut.

  22. Me says:

To Phowie and all the female fans of Colin’s: The real panty creamer is his Valmont in the Milos Forman’s film. Teamed up with Anette Bening. Great film, excellent cast and direction + the one and only Colin Firth.

  23. Phowie says:

@ Me, I forgot about that one! That came out right about the same time as ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ and got totally eclipsed. That was also one of the first time I remember seeing Annette Bening.

  24. juan says:

you people are crazy, stop dreaming over people you will never have! Especially you women, get a life!
