Bradley Whitford is currently promoting the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale. Originally, he was supposed to be a guest star, but it turned into a major role for him, as Commander Joseph Lawrence, “the architect of Gilead.” Whitford sought the role because he knew Elisabeth Moss from The West Wing, and in his new Variety interview, he is brimming with paternal-like pride for Moss’s development into a major actress and producer. That’s great and it’s interesting to me, but what’s more interesting is Whitford completely going off on MAGA politics and how The Handmaid’s Tale is basically optimistic compared to our new political reality. Some highlights from Variety:
He wishes that someone inside Trump’s cult would turn revolutionary: By Season 6, Lawrence has evolved into one of Gilead’s secret revolutionaries, ambivalent as he may be. Whitford wishes that someone in our own world would follow suit. In part, he blames his former and current network bosses for enabling the destruction of our democracy and the dismantling of our Constitution. “It’s interesting, especially when you look at all the people who I’ve worked for over the years lined up at the Trump inauguration, staying silent while their daughters’ rights are being torn away.”
The end of democracy: “It’s the end of democracy, and the planet’s on fire. But we’re focused on a renaissance in shoe comfort and cosmetic dentistry.”
He’s angry and he’s fed up. “You know, misogyny is at the reptilian brain stem of these right-wing Christian white nationalists. It’s punitive. And, man, I’m pissed at all the people I work for. Like, ‘F–KING. SPEAK. UP. I mean, if you run Disney, which I guess I work for now, I’ve sat through” — here, he imitates a studio head before the death of DEI — “‘We really care for you and want to make sure you have access to health care.’ Speak the f–k up! And Jeff Bezos, f–king speak up!”
What happened to Jeff Bezos: “I don’t want to be a punk attacking, but I would really like to ask Jeff Bezos — who, when I worked on ‘Transparent,’ was talking about the importance of supporting this vulnerable community who has been turned into a political football — ‘What the hell is happening here?!’”
Margaret Atwood is an optimist: “A year ago, there were 65,000 pregnant rape victims without access to abortion care. Now it’s way up from that. This is not a drill. It’s not a story. This is happening. Margaret Atwood said that she almost scrapped the book a couple of times because it seemed too far-fetched. Turns out Margaret Atwood’s an optimist.”
The point he makes about Bezos is interesting, because for years, Bezos was genuinely interested in becoming a cultural figure and someone who stood up for the “right things” – free speech, freedom of the press, woke/liberal politics. Then a switch happened in the past six or seven years. Bezos was not a fan of Joe Biden from what I understand. But I don’t get how “I’m not crazy about Biden” turns into this extreme right-wing turn. I also don’t get how all of these allegedly smart CEOs and business leaders simply didn’t figure out that the leopards would eat their faces too. They honestly thought sucking up to Trump would spare them, they thought Trump heralded the post-woke golden age. Well… I hope all of them get exactly what they voted for.

What would Bezos even be able to say? Considering the state of the WP, he’s probably not even letting anyone near him who might deign to question him.
I genuinely did not understand this character until now. He’s the architect of a society he’s now horrified by and secretly supporting the rebellion? But now I get it. He was an old school conservative republican who got swept up by the MAGA wave, genuinely believed in a return to “traditional” values but didn’t mean to create a society of sex slaves.
“The [Bezos] switch happened in the past six or seven years” – as in, when he screwed around and lost the level-headed, progressive, actual do-gooder woman in his life?
💯, @minnie
I’m not sure he would have left his wife only MSB used peagasus to hack his phone and found out he was cheating
The rich (and the businesses they own and PACs they control) have always supported “both sides” meaning they have given money to both Republicans and Democrats, often in the same races. That being said, there was a turn with Bezos, but also with Musk. They no longer support both sides as a pragmatic business move. They are all in with Trump. Trevor Noah has a great episode of his What Now podcast on Elon Musk and his turn and it is fascinating.
I get what you’re saying but I object to the use of the term “support”. They’re trying to buy influence, that’s all. Being a billionaire is antithetical to the most fundamental aspect of Democratic ideals which is the narrowing of the economic wealth gap.
Mackenzie is the only one that’s ever seemed to genuinely give a shit TBH.
Not surprising at all. I appreciate his vocalization, but he’s STILL a sparse voice amid this attack on women’s rights. Very few men were saying anything at all, let alone encouraging each other to speak up during Me Too when the focus was on sexual VIOLENCE against women, and for decades before. Why would anyone expect that to change when the topic is voting or abortion rights? I’m so tired of being sick and tired.
Bradley Whitford has been a real one for a long time. Josh was my favorite character on The West Wing, mostly because of him.
Gawd I was in love with Josh, and he plays Commander Lawrence with a similar wisdom and warmth, which is why I find this character so puzzling.
If only this country was full of Brad Whitfords. Sigh.
Obama pointed out at his recent Q&A that when there was public outcry about George Floyd, BLM became trendy and of course the corporations glommed on to the movement, exploiting it for marketing purposes. Now? Crickets. LGBTQ folks have been dealing with the corporate exploitation of Pride in the form of rainbow capitalism for at least a decade or more. It’s all just tokenism and corporations should never be revered or respected for using important social movements for aesthetics while not adhering to corporate policies that genuinely work to uphold values of equity and inclusion and a concerted effort at facilitating upward mobility for marginalized folks.
The corporations, the CEOs, the shareholders, the billionaires…do not trust them.
As is the nature with capitalism, all social movements are defined by their impact on profit. Susan Faludi carefully details how mass marketers orchestrated a backlash against feminism because they were threatened by a loss in profits to women chasing idyllic domesticity. When they realized that working women are powerful consumers, feminism arrived. Ditto for people of color and LGBT being recognized as consumers to be marketed to.
Profit is always the goal. Always. I am convinced that the reason marijuana was illegal for a century was there was no way to turn it into a profitable business.
So what’s the answer? Do we overthrow capitalism or continue using it to our advantage?
Money and greed bring the worse in people, simple as that. The only billionaire who doesn’t seem to be evil is Mackenzie Scott, she is the exception who confirms the rule.
Chicken-egg. Does money make people evil or is there something fundamentally flawed in the pursuit of money at all costs?
I wish more people would be honest with themselves that’s really what is driving most of this. It’s misogyny. The boys are mad the girls got good grades and better jobs and now aren’t as easy to force into miserable marriages. They’ve got a million TikTok and Instagram videos feeding them a narrative that a good little housewife/slave would fix all their problems and make them happier, rather than any self reflection on their own internal issues or who’s actually responsible for us all losing the economic game.
Even a lot of LGBT people won’t own up to it. Why do you think they hate trans people so much? Gay marriage? These things shatter the preconceived notions of gender roles being rigid. It upends the idea structural stability through social place. Trans people cannot be free until cis women are, simple as that.
