Teyana Taylor wore custom Ruth E. Carter to the Met Gala: perfect?

Vogue Met Gala livestream host Teyana Taylor worked with Oscar-winning costumer Ruth E. Carter for her custom zoot suit last night. There were so many thoughtful design elements including a headpiece they called “a durag on steroids.” The roses are a reference to her “Rose in Harlem” song. Ruth and Teyana did a video for Vogue in which they showed the layers to this look as Teyana got dressed. They said they had about six fittings. There’s also a matching purse! I was floored by this look and found it perfectly on the Superfine theme. Ruth did the costuming for Sinners, which everyone should see before it leaves theaters. It’s one of my favorite theater experiences of all time.

Look at the drama of this outfit.

Teyana’s cohost Ego Nwodim was in archive Christopher John Rogers. I love the exaggerated fit and her kicky red pumps. Ego and Teyana were great co-hosts last night and had a lot of fun with their guests.

LaLa Anthony did some excellent interviews on the blue carpet for Vogue, as we’ve come to expect from her. She was in archive Off-White by the late Virgil Abloh, and worked with his widow and team for this striking tribute. This has so much glamor with the elegant pantsuit accented by a dramatic tulle half gown.

Vice President Kamala Harris was also in Off-White! This was her first Met Gala. I’m having a hard time finding a photo of her to embed so here’s a Tweet from the Democrats official Twitter. She was in “a black and cream cady silk dress, complete with a silk scarf and dramatic sleeve.”

    She looked amazing

  2. SUN says:

The Off-White looks don’t spark joy for me but the Ruth E Carter and Christopher John Rodgers looks are SUBLIME.

I’m surprised (in a good way) at the number of people committing to maximalism for this theme. If not now, when?

  3. Jais says:

    Dramatic! Teyana is gorgeous.

  4. antipodean says:

LaLa’s dress is gorgeous, and such a lovely tribute to Virgil. If I had to encapsulate a description, I would call it “meringue on the side”.
Seeing Kamala looking fine and beautiful makes me want to weep! We coulda had a bad bitch, and someone who is actually presidential. I despair for the future of this great nation. 5051!

  5. outoftheshadows says:

Knowing what an insane body Teyana has under this suit, and seeing her commit fully to this level of gorgeous androgyny, makes me feel really inspired. I loved the vibe she and Ego had when interviewing people as well.

And those rainbow buttons on Ego’s suit cuffs are perfection. (So much of that outfit is perfection–but the buttons were a new pleasure this morning.)
