Miley Cyrus released her latest album, Something Beautiful, on May 30, and the accompanying visual film will be in theaters starting June 12. The big premiere happened on Friday at the Tribeca Festival, who billed the film as “a one-of-a-kind pop opera featuring thirteen original new songs.” Miley showed up (with her mother!) donning Veronica Lake wavy hair and a sheer dress that I thought was the winner of a Project Runway unconventional materials challenge — the materials being fishing boat netting and ropes — but apparently was Schiaparelli. Tickets were fairly steep at a few hundred bucks a pop for the 55-minute screening and following Q&A with the filmmakers, including Miley. Some audience members, though, acquired their (still expensive) tix on resale from links that made the event seem more like a live concert. So when the movie was over and the Q&A was unfolding, sans live performance, those misled attendees got restless; they heckled Miley until she did some impromptu a cappella singing. I would not describe those fans’ behavior as something beautiful.
The Tribeca Festival premiere of Miley Cyrus’ new film Something Beautiful — which accompanies her recently-released album of the same name — was interrupted by hecklers who wanted to hear the star sing.
The actress and singer, 32, premiered her new project at the Beacon Theatre during the annual New York City event on Friday, June 6.
At one point, while she was onstage taking part in a Q&A with producer Panos Cosmatos and co-directors and co-writers Jacob Bixenman and Brendan Walter, audience members yelled at Cyrus to perform.
“We paid $800. Sing,” one attendee screamed, as another later shouted, “We thought this was a concert.”
Cyrus ended up appeasing fans’ requests to hear her voice, as she sang an impromptu a cappella rendition of “The Climb” — her popular tune from 2009’s Hannah Montana: The Movie.
Cyrus’ supporters came to her defense after videos of the moment went viral on social media.
“She’s so nice and patient. Those ‘fans’ are soooo rude and entitled. They should be ashamed,” one user wrote, as another said, “She owes these people nothing. She handled this with such class and grace. Shame on them.”
Added one other commenter: “Maybe do your research before attending then. She’s not an object, you don’t demand someone to sing 🫠.”
A representative for both Cyrus and the Tribeca Festival did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Saturday, June 7.
Cyrus released Something Beautiful, her ninth studio album, on May 30. The accompanying visual film will be released in theaters later this month.
At this particular juncture in my life, I would not spend $800 on either a movie or concert ticket. This is the one point I’ll concede to the heckling fans — the tickets cost too much. One fan went so far as to post on Twitter the link they clicked to purchase the tix, which listed it as “concert tour tickets.” That language alone should’ve tipped off the so-called fan, though, considering Miley’s been vocal about no longer touring because it wasn’t “healthy” for her, and because she ended up paying for them because something something people don’t support her vision. But even if Miley being on a tour out of nowhere didn’t sound any alarms, I’m surprised these ticket-purchasers didn’t look at the Tribeca website! I know they were buying from a third-party, but wouldn’t you still check out what the host venue says about its own event? And regardless of any of that, the behavior of the hecklers was just abhorrent. Some people have no manners!
People are really so rude, especially after Covid, it feels like people forgot how to behave. If it is too expensive, don’t go, that will decrease the prices. Unfortunately, as long as people pay, those resellers are gonna buy these tickets to make a nice profit off of it. Miley handled it like a pro though.
Miley was performing as a child even at her own birthday. It isn’t surprising she doesn’t want to tour anymore. I liked her latest album, there are a few songs stuck in my head for days. Her voice is really mesmerizing.
I saw video of her singing and it was impressive off the cuff. She was v kind in spite of their rudeness.
Too many people can’t be bothered to read or look up anything these days. It would have taken only a couple of minutes to find out where this was held and what it actually was.
Miley was far too nice to those very rude fans.
This is why popstars don’t do events anymore or meet and greets!!!Let this woman rest ,she already said that her vocal cords are very fragile which is why she doesn’t want to tour!
The ticket price doesn’t justify the heckling. It was their choice to purchase and not check what the event was.
Imagine spending that much money without doing any due diligence to be sure what you’re buying.
