Katie Holmes wore Prada at the Tony Awards: one of the worst looks of the night?

This is nowhere near a comprehensive fashion list for last night’s Tony Awards, I’m just trying to highlight some of the best or worst fashion moments from people I recognized! I covered George Clooney’s appearance separately – go here to see. Katie Holmes went to the Tonys in this two-piece Prada ensemble. In my opinion, the house of Prada has issues and this is a glaring example of those issues. They have color issues – they put funky colors together and when they do bicolor or tricolor looks, it’s always jarring. The top part of this is also just… awful, it’s like a wrinkled sack.

Nicole Scherzinger surprised everyone by winning her first Tony Award for Sunset Boulevard, beating out Audra McDonald in Gypsy. It was also a surprise because Nicole’s time on Broadway has been marred by some off-Broadway gossip, like her coziness with MAGA. She wore a custom Rodarte, which looked lovely (albeit slightly dated).

Cynthia Erivo was the Tonys host, and she had a lot of outfit changes. She wore this Schiaparelli look for the red carpet. Eh.

Sarah Snook won her first Tony! Her gown was Richard Quinn.

Michelle Williams wore Bibhu Mohapatra – I LOVE the skirt. I feel like the top could have been different?

Sarah Paulson wore Schiaparelli as well – this is so “1950s.”

Bonus Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter. Keanu practically got a lapdance from Jonathan Groff!

  1. Eurydice says:

Katie looks like she forgot to take off her hairdresser’s cape.

    • Kateeee says:

This!!! Like the beading of her real top got stuck to the cape and this was the best improvisation they could manage!

  2. Alicky says:

    OMG, that Prada is tragic!

  3. Katie’s top does no justice to the bottom piece. It’s a mess.

    • Josephine says:

And what is going on with the waist line? It almost looks like the top is tucked in, but you can see that it is not from the back view.

The skirt looks like it doesn’t fit — I refuse to believe it was meant to be a low-rise formal skirt.

Not one thing works about that outfit.

  4. yellowy says:

Katie Holmes’ dress would have worked on someone like Angelina Jolie or Tilda Swinton or a younger Cher or Grace Jones. Women can who can wear ensembles consisting of disparate pieces (with even an ugly element) with a certain casualness so it looks chic rather than an eccentric failure.

  5. Miranda says:

It’s like a “drag on a dime” challenge and Katie tried to gussy up a Dollar Tree poncho.

  6. Smart&Messy says:

Katie’s dress doesn’t fit and looks like cheap wrinkly nylon. The skirt could have been lovely, but the waist line is at the wrong place and it looks like the train is fixed with a white hair elastic. Nicole is A+. I love Cynthia’s dress, very theatre costumey. Sarah Snook and Sarah Paulson are too short for the structure of their dresses. Mihelle Williams is very pretty, but I would have saved that dress for a fall/winter event.

  7. k says:

Armchair designing here, but I would have made Katie’s top a corset in that green. I like the colors together, and its giving Wicked.

  8. Lady Digby says:

FARROW: And mostly it was me, because if you read the script, I initiate just about every conversation.
Did anyone else read Mia Farrow ‘s interview about her Tony nom for The Roommate. It is a two hander with Patti Lupone but the above quote makes it clear why Mia felt ‘ it was all about her character?” Probably just as well Patti is in her repentance era because otherwise she’d have a firecracker response to this bold claim!

  9. Chaine says:

When my siblings and I were very young, my mom used to put us in these billowy over shirts for meals so that we wouldn’t get food splotches on nice clothes. This I what Katie’s blouse reminds me of.

Cynthia looks gorgeous. Not sure why this ensemble is questioned?

  10. Amy Bee says:

I love Kate’s skirt not the top. Everybody else looks nice but I wish Sarah Snook’s dress was in a different colour.

  11. Walking the Walk says:

How did Katie say yes this is the look. What the heck. Also boo to Nicole. At least their MAGA queen won something. Eyeroll.

    • Honey says:

Is it for sure about Nicole S. being MAGA? I’ve never read as much, but who knows? Her Sunset Boulevard song was outstanding.

  12. GiveMePizza says:

I think Katie has aged beautifully. This outfit is not good, but I feel like she’s never really dressed very well?

She won’t be getting any applause for her sad fashions, but she will forever get my slow-clap for deftly escaping Scientology. Nobody can be awesome at all the things! Except maybe Pedro Pascal.

  13. Mel says:

The back was nice, but the front looked like she tucked in too much and she could barely walk in it. That was a huge fail.

  14. phlyfiremama says:

Cynthia’s dress is an absolute dream!! Wow!

  15. HelloDannie says:

    Love Michelle’s dress!

  16. Tis True Tis True says:

Worst look of the night? I sure as hell hope so.

Fuck Nicole’s MAGA ass self, but I thought Audra’s performance as Mama Rose was awful. Maybe Rose going mad works in the context of the production, but it just came across as deeply odd. Not really a fan of hers, overly enunciated singing is fingernails on the blackboard to me. Kristin Chenoweth, all of them. It’s what’s in fashion now, what they teach in musical theater programs, and Audra probably does it the best, but I just prefer a more casual, conversational style. Don’t go to many shows these days, LOL. Went to a lot when younger.

    • mizzelizz says:

Even worse about Katie’s awful look is that she couldn’t walk in it – when she went to present an award she had to take teeny tiny steps and it looked just….so silly. Plus the outfit was…awful.

  17. Nanea says:

The powers that be are really hyping Bill & Ted’s Existential Stage Adventure, aka KR and AW do ” Waiting for Godot”, right?

Not that I mind. And until Felon47’s Maladministration happened, supported by Magas Are Governing America, we were planning on going, as it was already announced last year in August.

Now we’re even boycotting doing any kind of job-related trips.

Katie Holmes either doesn’t seem to own a mirror, or… I don’t know. It’s beyond tragic.

  18. KC says:

Do these actresses not have enough sense or backbone to say this looks terrible? Holmes skirt was potentially gorgeous, but the top looks like Talbots.

  19. FYI says:

What’s the deal with Katie Holmes, can someone tell me? She is splashed all over the mags for her outfits — with walks down NY streets that look pre-arranged? But every single look is awful. Uniformly awful. Who decided she is some kind of trend-setter? I don’t get it. “Katie’s gorgeous coats! Katie in elegant black! Katie in baggy jeans!”

And every time she looks like she is wearing pajamas from Forever21.
    I. Am. Baffled.

  20. jais says:

Saw a red carpet clip and found out that Alex and Keanu will be on Broadway in Waiting for Godot…which honestly sounds perfect. I hope there’s a video of it for those who can’t see in person.

  21. Libra says:

Katie Holmes could have picked an outfit from her c!oset, any old outfit, and she would have looked better than this.

  22. RainyD says:

Katie has no sense of style. I never think she looks good in terms of what she’s wearing, but she is beautiful.

    The colors were OK.

I think the back of the top would look better if it were the front. Like she has the top on backwards.

  23. J.Ferber says:

Audra McDonald’s performance was magnificent. Did Trump elect himself president of the Tony’s too? That might explain why Scherzinger won the Tony. If she’s Maga friendly, she wins, right?

  24. J. Ferber says:

I didn’t like Katie’s dress, but I like Katie a lot. I wonder why her romance with Jamie Foxx didn’t work out. It would have been nice for both of them if it did.

  25. kyra says:

Nicole Sherzinger cannot sing. Not for theater. She has never been able to sing. Her entire career in theater is a mystery to me. (Actually, no, not a mystery; was a pop star, dated a famous producer, became famous herself. Blergh.) Unlike Audra, where her vocal messiness could be justified by the acting and she always comes back to a fully realized sound, Nicole just never developed hers, had no heft or technique or special musicality. That’s not what broadway is for, famous beginners; it’s for experts. Audiences should know the difference, but with microphones they just don’t. Oh well. Audra at least has six tonys already and I guess she doesn’t need another, but it’s a shame for the industry.

  26. blue says:

Katie’s skirt is a miss. The fabric is too stiff for the back inset to softly drape, as it should. The top is just bizarre & not flattering.
Erivo’s dress is gorgeous, even though it doesn’t fit at all with her vibe.
