Kylie Kelce shares a lot of great stories on her weekly podcast, Not Gonna Lie. She keeps it real about societal things, parenting, and marriage. This week’s ep was no different. When talking to her guest, Olympic medalist Ilona Maher, Kylie revealed some solid advice from her mother. As their conversation was winding down, Kylie brought up a story from Ilona’s podcast, House of Maher, in which Ilona revealed that she called her mother after she lost her virginity. Ilona explained that her mother never tried to make anything taboo for her or her sisters. Things like sex and drinking were always more of a discussion about what you need to know to make safe, informed decisions. Kylie then shared that her mother was the same way. In fact, when a younger Kylie told her that she planned on “saving herself” for marriage, her mother had a different response than most people may expect.
Kylie Kelce is opening up about how her mom, Lisa McDevitt, approached their conversations about sex before marriage.
On the June 12 episode of her Not Gonna Lie podcast, Kelce told guest Ilona Maher about how her mom, whom she refers to as “Lil Lis,” reacted when she told her she wanted to wait until after she was married to have sex.
“There was some point in my life when I was younger where I told my mom during one of our deep mom talks, a.k.a. when I, like, bombarded her and came in and sat in a room while she was doing something… I told her. I was like, ‘I think I’m gonna save myself for marriage,’ ” she recalled.
Kylie, who went on to marry now-retired NFL star Jason Kelce in 2018, noted that her mom didn’t encourage the practice, telling her daughter, “I think you’re gonna change your mind.”
The now-mother of four added that her mom “doubled down” telling her, “You gotta test drive a car before you buy it.”
Kylie said that her mom’s reaction kept their relationship open and honest as she continued into the dating world.
“If my choice is not to stay pure towards marriage — news flash, didn’t stick — but if it wasn’t that, my mom was like, ‘You’re good.’ ”
Kylie, who shares daughters Wyatt, 5, Elliotte, 4, Bennett, 2, and Finnley, 2 months, with Jason, added that she looks to her mom as a parenting role model.
“I’m trying to recreate the Lil Lis situation,” she said. “I want my girls to be able to tell me things.”
As for her own relationship with her mom, Kylie says they’re “very close.”
“I just this morning described our relationship as codependent because I love my mom,” Kylie said. “When my car starts, I’m pretty sure that it calls my mom. It’s the weirdest phenomenon, but it happens every time. It’s weird. So I’m going with it. I love checking in with her.”
I cannot tell you how refreshing I find this. Kylie has always talked about how great her relationship with “Lil Lis” is, and now I see why. I love that Lisa didn’t try to shame her daughter or give her a lesson on purity. She just offered an honest opinion. And although Kylie does say she “doubled down,” she did stress how her mom made her feel like she would be okay with whatever choice she did make. Ilona and Kylie also talk about how kids are going to experiment either way. The ones with parents that are more open about taboo subjects are more likely to have realistic expectations and be safer about it. It sounds like Lil Lis was a great role model for Kylie and her sister, Audrey, as they were growing up. I bet she’ll have helpful wisdom as Kylie’s daughters get older too.

I am not a mom. Kylie is funny and blunt, and her guests are amazing.
This is great, but it’s annoying that purity is even still a topic of discussion. If someone chooses celibacy that’s a perfectly valid choice. But purity is an ancient tradition of controlling women’s sexuality and lives. Because a woman who has survived sexual assault is not pure. And a celibate person with a sexual history is not pure. It’s gross.
Just some context for those who are confused by “Lil Lis” – Kylie’s dad is 6’9″ and her mom is 5’2″ (I think I have those numbers right – definitely in that range if not exact) and so at some point everyone, kids included, started referring to them as Big Ed and Little Lisa (which clearly got shortened over time)
