The Duchess of Edinburgh attended several events around Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to the UK. She was there for the state banquet at Windsor Castle, alongside her husband Prince Edward. Soon after the dinner, Sophie traveled solo to Bosnia for a multi-day tour focused on the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide. Sophie went to the Srebrenica Memorial, and she also had events around some of her core causes, like refugees, women’s empowerment and the end to sexual violence in conflict. Sophie’s trip to Bosnia barely got any attention whatsoever, but interestingly enough, The Sun had a reporter in Bosnia, and Sophie ended up giving an interview on the record. I wonder if she even had a press secretary with her or any staffers setting this up? Because the way the Sun reported it, it felt like a pretty informal chat.
The Duchess of Edinburgh brushed off suggestions she is the ‘Royal Secret weapon’ but admitted “I like to fly under the radar”. She was speaking in Bosnia, where she hugged mothers fighting for justice after 30 years and laid flowers at a cemetery where 7,000 genocide victims are buried. She read a message of “hope” from the King and said “I hope that I make a difference”.
Despite marrying the King’s younger sibling Prince Edward 26 years ago, she has often been dubbed “The Royal Family’s secret weapon”. Speaking to The Sun on Sunday at the Srebrenica Genocide Memorial this week she laughed off the nickname, saying: “It’s all very well being a secret weapon but if no one knows, maybe it’s too secret.
She then added: “I suppose I should take it as a backhanded compliment. I don’t see myself in a frontline position per se, that said, admittedly there are fewer working members of the family these days so I suppose more and more are becoming less secretive. I just wonder what they are going to describe me as next.”
Sophie became Duchess of Edinburgh after Edward was named Duke on his 59th birthday in March 2023. Asked about losing her former Countess of Wessex title she joked “I quite liked her”.
But speaking about taking on the late Queen’s title, said: “It was quite large shoes to fill. For me it was quite an emotional thing to sort of step into her shoes. It felt like quite a big moment. But of course being practical, my role and my husband’s role is to support the King, as it was to support the Queen, and we are fortunate because we are able to not be in a front and centre role. It allows us the flexibility to explore our own interests and then also be available to do things like this where the King asked if I would represent him here. It so happens it also covering an area of interest personally for me too. But yes, we are there to support and that will continue.”
There have been calls for Sophie to be given more responsibility and The Sun understands there are motives behind palace walls for her to have a greater role after the deaths of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip and the banishment of Prince Andrew, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, which all left a heavier workload for the rest of the family.
Now it’s “the banishment” – they still haven’t decided how to describe what happened in the Sussexit – either Harry and Meghan “abandoned” their “duty” or they were forcibly exiled, banished, thrown out, tossed aside. Which is it? As for Sophie… she comes across well here, but I still wonder if this was her way of pointing out that she’s been hard at work for the Crown for years with little attention. She keeps trying to force this “secret weapon” narrative too, she must have been so pleased to be asked about one of her very own talking points! Anyway, good for Sophie for actually working and traveling. A trip to Bosnia to mark a major 30th anniversary of a humanitarian failure… it should have been the heir making the trip. Alas, the heir wanted to fly to Switzerland for football instead.

Within five years Edward and Sophie could be the only full-time working royals during William ‘s reign so both will maintain significant roles. Edward may even become King in his own right if both Will and George resign?
Edward? With Charlotte and Louis, the Sussexes and all the Yorks before him, how should Edward be king??? Or did you mean regent?
@Blubb I was being very mischievous and suggesting that as they are claiming only WORKING royals count these days; that they can also ignore the line of succession in the event of William and George resigning their hereditary right to the throne. They bypass the line of succession and therefore only Anne or Edward would be eligible as working royals to take over the crown 👑👑!!
That is how BRF likes it. If she got attention, they would get rid of her ass quicker than her alleged motorcade.
I have no beef with Sophie. She does the job. But where is Edward? HE is the actual royal in this couple, why is Charles not asking his brother?
We do see him on occasion but it seems as if Sophie travels a lot by herself. Just curious.
I sincerely hope they are budgeting for all the royal funerals they will have in the next decade and not waiting to spring those bills on their taxpayers after the fact.
He had royal engagements both 7/12 and 7/13, he just gets even less press than Sophie.
They don’t send them to this stuff together b/c they don’t have the manpower to do so! The bench is too sparse, they need both of them in different places every day.
The 30th anniversary of this genocide needs far more attention, particularly given that locally history is being actively re-written. The royals could have done something good here by using their titles/profile to draw attention to it but those with decent name recognition DNGAF and stayed home. They are useless.
Sophie knows if she gets more attention she will be ostracised by the senior royals.
@Amy Bee at one stage Chuck kept them waiting for the Edinburgh title.
Again the pecking order is rigidly adhered In that family: know your place at all times. Be competent, do bread and butter engagements along with Kents and Gloucesters but don’t steal thunder belongings to the big four!!
A lot of heavy causes are in Sophie’s brief, and she has spoken and appeared on their behalf for quite some time. I don’t know if she has had any effect on any scale, although I think she has done some good work on eye health. However, the royals measure work in terms of number of appearances or engagements. Notice that those stats are released annually. I know impact is hot easy to measure, but their job is only to listen, learn, and draw attention to. Obviously, Sophie is a trusted hand, more so than her husband it seems.
Something is going on with Ed’s health. He has looked like death warmed over these last few years. Perhaps they send out Sophie because Edward is too frail?
The image of Sophie shunning Meghan at QEII’s funeral will always stay in my mind.
Other than that, Sophie’s a nobody. One can hear the gust of disappointment Charles used to hear when crowds realized they weren’t going to meet Diana up close.
The Commonwealth and the Crown need H&M if they want eager, excited crowds.
She’s literally describing being half-in half-out, right? What H&M wanted? Pursue their own interests but being available to attend things when asked? Curious.
Taking over The Queen’s title? Stepping into her shoes??? Philip may have been given that title on his marriage to Princess Elizabeth, but I don’t think I ever saw her referenced as the Duchess of Edinburgh. She was always known as Princess Elizabeth until she became Queen Elizabeth II.
I had to double-check. So here’s Charles’ birth announcement:
“It has just been announced from Buckingham Palace that her Royal Highness, Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh, has safely delivered a Prince at 9:14 pm and that her Royal Highness and her son are both doing well. Listeners will wish us to offer their loyal congratulations to Princess Elizabeth and to the Royal family on this happy occasion.”
So yes, her DoE title is listed, but when later referenced she’s Princess Elizabeth. Princess first.
No fan of the BRM, obviously, else I wouldn’t be such an avid fan of celebitchy.com. However, points on to D. Sophie re acknowleding the massacre of 8000 men and boys. It’s never wrong to highlight the horrors of the Bosnian-Serb war. Totally separately, I read how close she came to dying when she gave birth to her daughter, and I’m glad they both made it.
