Benedict Cumberbatch is currently promoting The Roses, a (modernized) version of The War of the Roses, about a wealthy couple’s chaotic divorce. I was going to say that Benedict sort of fell off, but that’s not true. He’s part of the MCU (as Doctor Strange), and he’s working constantly. But a decade ago, Bendy was definitely a more buzzed-about, obsessed-over actor. It’s just not the same now. He probably prefers it that way. Well, as he promotes The Roses, he decided to talk about how Hollywood is very “wasteful.” He cites… food consumption, set-lighting and lack of recycled materials…?
Benedict Cumberbatch called Hollywood a “grossly wasteful industry” during an interview on “Ruthie’s Table 4” podcast. The Oscar nominee is no stranger to massive studio productions given his role as Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Cumberbatch loves undergoing a “body transformation” for his work, he also says “it’s horrific eating beyond your appetite.”
“Going back to responsibility and resourcefulness and sustainability, it’s just like, ‘What am I doing? I could feed a family with the amount I’m eating,’” Cumberbatch said, noting he would eat five meals a day while getting into Doctor Strange shape, in addition to snacks like boiled eggs, almonds and cheese in between meals.
“It’s a grossly wasteful industry,” he continued. “Think about set builds that aren’t recycled, think about transport, think about food, think about housing, but also light and energy. The amount of wattage you need to create daylight and consistent light in a studio environment. It’s a lot of energy.”
Cumberbatch admitted that actors are routinely slammed and branded as hypocrites when they speak out in support of sustainability in Hollywood given how wasteful the industry is, but the actor noted that he tries to “push the green initiative” on his film sets as both an actor and a producer.
“You don’t have to give the crew plastic bottles,” he said as an example. If you’re in the middle of a desert and you can’t get glass bottles there, fair enough. But we’re in the 21st Century.”
I’m sort of fine/whatever with Benedict talking about the lack of recycling and Hollywood’s energy-consumption, but I find it bizarre that he’s talking about his personal food consumption as an example of Hollywood’s “waste.” Like… first off, you’re playing Doctor Strange, not Thor. I’m sure Benedict wants to be in good shape, but is Hollywood “forcing” Benedict to eat five meals a day to be a ripped wizard? He’s not even complaining about the “waste” of craft services. Is it really wasteful if… people are actually eating the food and making the choice to bulk up for their jobs? Also: one of the most environmental-wasteful aspects of Hollywood currently is all of this AI sh-t and I kind of wish more people would talk about that.
Also: since Benedict cited “eating food to bulk up for a role” – which is really a personal choice – it’s kind of crazy that he doesn’t self-identify another personal choice with consumption/waste implications: having three children, like Benedict. I’m not against people having kids, but hey, he’s complaining about eating food for work!

Bendy, I will love you forever for “pingwings” and going with the joke, and you’re a great actor… but how many private jet rides and helicopter flights have you taken courtesy of Hollywood studios? You’re like Clooney : no one cares, shut up and act.
Shades of William Wales with his “I turn off lights in whatever one of my palaces I happen to be in.” GTFO
I’m with you on the pinglings I still laugh at that from time to time @lady Esther and also feel like, Bendy if you don’t want the role that requires you to gain weight and eat a lot then…don’t accept millions of dollars to perform the role.
Why does he need to bulk up for a movie that’s going to be 90% CGI. Throw him in a green suit and create the muscles in post production.
Has he ever said no thanks, I don’t need a whole Winnebago trailer for myself? I don’t need to be driven to the studio in a suburban, I’ll take the bus, thanks? Or I can share with the foley operator? Bulking up for a part is hardly an example of food waste. Dude’s kinda dumb–never realized that.
The combination of a posh accent and his original fame coming from what was a pretty intelligent show (aired on PBS stateside) gives him a veneer of intelligence, but ITA this interview suggests otherwise.
Why TF is Hollywood so wasteful?! But food waste kinda made me chuckle because most stars aren’t known for eating a lot. The crew as a whole probably does I suppose.
I wonder if he’s referring to on set food trucks and catering. At the end of the day does the unused get thrown out?
If it was about craft food, then his comments are even more unforgivable. Stop taking food out of other people’s mouths!
AS IF a month or two of extra chicken breasts for Bendy will move the needle on climate change and sustainability… sigh. These people
Food waste absolutely disgusts me. If they’re over ordering for the crew, they need a plan to ensure people with food insecurity are benefitting (which might be their own staff, TBH).
But, like, snacking on eggs and almonds to bulk up is not food waste.
Paul Rudd has talked about the “bulking up” too — he’s made jokes about it while sitting next to Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth; that he has the same kind of routine but you get what you get.
I don’t feel like BC is being too preachy, just that it’s something that he worries about and maybe there are places where things can be better.
He sounds so douchey and out of touch. Don’t take the job if you don’t want to adhere to the physical protocols.
LOL, bad case of sour grapes after all these years, huh? So nasty.
War of the Roses is one of my favorite movies. I was getting a divorce when it came out and I identified with it way too much. LOL
I’m sure I’ll watch the remake but I’m not really a fan of Benedict Cumberbatch, and this article makes me even less so. I just can’t see him in the Michael Douglas role.
Thanks Kaiser for this article. I miss the days when there were lots of Benedict stories. I will always love him no matter what. Sometimes he seems to just say whatever is on his mind at the moment and not self edit much. The trailer for The Roses is a hoot. Can’t wait to see it.
I guess I just assumed — don’t the 100s of production staff get to eat off the craft services table? If my assumption is wrong, I’m horrified. Sure, water coolers and reusable bottles are always better – not a Nobel prize winning thought there, although I’ve been known to grab a plastic bottle at the gas station when desperate.
I’ve never understood the “he takes a lot of flights so stfu about sustainability” mentality. Are we saying he has to be 100% sustainable in every facet of his life in order to request no plastic water bottles on set? He has to fly for his job. Movies don’t make enough money without premieres.
IMO attention to the environment needs to be on whatever you can change, whenever you can change it, with the understanding that we can’t all be Greta Thunberg. He’s trying to do a good thing and some of y’all are armchair criticizing him. (Is the armchair thrifted? Do you clean it with eco-friendly materials in glass bottles? Is it seated next to a fan, not an air conditioner? Do you watch hours of tv in front of it? I assume you give yourself an environmental pass for some of these things and do your best elsewhere, which seems to be what BC is doing.)
