Sandra Bullock takes home the Oscar for Best Actress

Sandra Bullock has won the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in The Blind Side as Leigh Anne Tuohy, a tough interior designer who takes in a homeless teen, changing the boy’s life and her family in the process. The race was thought to be between Sandra and Meryl Streep. Meryl gave a sublime performance in Julie & Julia, but she has two Oscars already and has been nominated more than any other actress. Sandra claimed she wasn’t going to take home the statue, but she was wrong. It was Sandra’s turn to shine and she definitely did.

Did I really earn this or did I just wear you all down? I would like to thank the academy for allowing me in the last month to have the most incredible ride with rooms full of artists that I see tonight and that I’ve worked with before and that I hope to work with in the future who inspire me and blaze trails for us, four of them that I’ve fallen deeply in love with, I share this night with and I share this award with. Gaby, I love you so much. You are exquisite, you are beyond words to me. Carey, your grace and your elegance and your beauty and your talent makes me sick. Helen I feel like we are family… I don’t have the words to express what I think of you. Meryl, you know what I think of you and you are such a good kisser. I have so many people to thank for my good fortune in this lifetime. And this is a once in a lifetime experience I know.

To the family that allowed me to play them, the Tuohy family, I know they’re in here and you’ll probably hear her in a minute. Maybe not. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to… the family that made this film that gave me the opportunity to do something different John Lee Hancock, Gil Netter, Alcon, Warner Brothers, the actors…

Everyone who’s shown me kindness when it wasn’t fashionable, I thank you. To everyone that was mean to me… George Clooney threw me in a pool years ago, I’m still holding a grudge. But there’s so many people to thank, not enough time. I would like to thank what this film is about to me, which are the moms that take care of the babies and the children no matter where they come from. Those moms and parents never get thanked. I in particularly failed to thank one.

So, if I can take this moment to thank Helgibe for not letting me ride in cars with boys until I was 18 because she was right I would have done what she said I was going to do. For making me practice every day when I got home, piano, ballet whatever it is I wanted to be. She said to be an artist you had to practice every day, and for reminding her daughters that there is no race, no religion, no class system, no color, nothing, no sexual orientation that makes us better than anyone else. We are all deserving of love. So to that trailblazer who allowed me to have that and this [holds up Oscar] and this… I thank you so much for this opportunity that I share with these extraordinary women and my lover Meryl Streep. Thank you.

[From Sandra Bullock’s acceptance speech]

Sandra also earned the good sport award at the Razzies this weekend by picking up her two awards, worst actress and worst couple for All About Steve, in person! Sandra even had a charity event to host at the same time but skipped out for a short while to head over to the Razzies. In her acceptance speech she joked that she had vowed ahead of the awards to show up, and that “I said I would show up and then I miraculously won!” Oh Sandra, it really is your year, you just forgot to thank your husband in your Oscar acceptance speech! Will you be making a veiled reference to it next year like Sean Penn did when he presented your Oscar?

Update: As a lot of you pointed out, Sandra thanked her husband when she said she thanked her mom for making her Oscar possible. She said she “who allowed me to have that and this [holds up Oscar] and this” at which point she pointed to Jesse.

Well, she said that she thanks her mother for this and that and this, while pointing at her husband (who was in tears) – that’s enough reference, no?

  2. bite me says:

and this is one of the reason the Oscars doesn’t mean shit

  3. Did I really earn this or did I just wear you all down?

Well, that’s a nice way to acknowledge the elephant in the room. No, you don’t deserve it. Years from now, that’s what people are going to remember.

  4. raincoaster says:

She didn’t thank my imaginary boyfriend, Michael Lewis, the guy who wrote the book in the first place. Guess he’s not her type.

  5. nona says:

This is a joke. But I don’t completely hate her, so… enjoy it,Ms.Bullock!

    peace

  6. Kiki says:

The best acceptance speeches were given by women. Bravo girls! Monique was so honest and Sandra kind of reminded me that I should be thankful to have such a great mom, she made me weep

  7. JM says:

Duh, she said how blessed she is and pointed at her husband . . . he was crying happy tears so I think he was fine with that.

I wanted Meryl to win but am ok w/Sandy taking it . . .her speech didn’t suck and she seems pretty real.

  8. JM says:

    Sandy looked gorgeous, btw.

  9. Sunnyjyl says:

I was hoping she would win. She did acknowledge her husband with a gesture, which the camera captured. I thought she was gracious and kind. I also agree with Forest Whitaker’s words about the ease she conveys in her performance, and not always getting recognized as an actress with depth.

  10. vic says:

She thanked him when she said she should thank her mom for this (her oscar) and that ( pointing at her husband). She did more with that subtle gesture than sean penn ever did for robin wright.

  11. bluejeanblues says:

I love her to death and think she’s a classy lady. She’s more “real” than most of the people in that room and her thank you made my eyes tear up.

don’t care what the cynics and haters think, she’s always top of the list in my book.

  12. Trillion says:

Loved Bullock’s look tonight and really liked the way she came across in her speech. What exactly was Sean Penn referencing with his cryptic comment about what he and the Academy had in common? Did anyone catch that? My husband and I were baffled. I’m pretty sure it was something assholeish.

  13. CB Rawks says:

Before he said her name I was whispering “Sandy Sandy Sandy!” and crossing my fingers. Then I jumped around the kitchen for a few minutes, squealing. My husband could tell who won even though he was upstairs. 😀
I did the same thing earlier going “JeffJeffJeff!”
    This is an awesome day!!

  14. CB Rawks says:

Trillion, I agree, Sean was being an asshole, and I also want to know who he was referring to.

  15. CB Rawks says:

And Sandra looked absolutely beautiful! Her hair, makeup and dress were all just heavenly! I’d vote her best dressed.

Miley Cyrus looked like hammered s***, eh. What did you guys think of her mis-shapen medieval undergarment/dress?

  16. Chana says:

I’m glad she won, but not glad she won for this particular film.

It really is grating watching film after film with the white savior coming in and helping the various ethnic peoples out of their struggles. There are plenty of stories of people bringing themselves out of struggles. There are plenty of stories of Black people helping Black people, Asian people helping Asian people, Hispanic people helping Hispanic people and so on.

Again, very happy that she won because she has deserved one for years. She’s an excellent actress.

The fact that the story is true does temper my annoyance a bit, but this will just encourage more movie-makers to make more films that basically tell minorities that they can’t help themselves.

And before anyone tells me that it isn’t true, just look up White Savior movies.

  17. Carrie says:

It’s been said already, but I thought Sandra’s gesture to her husband was very loving and sweet, without being overly showy. She pointed to him and said “this” meaning that he is one of the things in her life she is most thankful for. She has been effusive in her thanks for him in all of her other speeches, so I’m sure he isn’t feeling snubbed at all!

  18. Awww I’m so happy for her. I hope I’ll be able to see a video of the acceptance speech soon 🙂

  19. Confuzzle says:

I love that she turned up at the Razzles and gave an awesome speech. Hilarious. I watched All About Steve after reading that she would go to the Razzies, and found it hysterical, great and silly film.

  20. CeeCee12 says:

I love Sandra. I liked Blind Side because it was a good true story. The film was not as good as some others but she shone like she always does.

She has such a good career. She has managed to age, be appealing and likeable. She also doesn’t pimp out her love life for fame.

When she pointed to her husband to thank her mother for him it spoke volumes about their love.

  21. Mairead says:

Aww what a lovely speech 🙂 But her dress makes her look stumpy in the photo above. And that’s some feat considering Sandy’s so tall!

I haven’t seen the film (it’s only just out over here), so I can’t judge her performance. But I will say something sacrilegious here – I’m glad Meryl didn’t win. I don’t think she deserved it for “Julie & Julia”. In fact I much preferred Amy’s performance. Meryl generally leaves me a bit cold anyway, but as someone who didn’t grow up watching Julia Child, when I saw the film and then saw clips of Julia on YouTube, I thought her performance was a caricature, but nobody wanted to say anything, because, it’s y’know, Meryl.

  22. Gemma says:

I agree with Mairead on Meryl Streep account. I usually love her but thought she wasn’t that great in Julie & Julia and just got a nom because its standard procedure for Meryl. Amy Adams was definetely better.
I was rooting Gabourey or Carey mulligan. Its a shame Bullock won.She seems to be a classy lady but she was far from the best actress this past year.

  23. Jane Q. Doe says:

In her speech, I think what Sandy says is “Helga B.” in regard to her mom. As soon as she mentioned there was 1 mom she neglected to thank, I knew she meant her own mama and got a little teary. Her speech, and how gracious and funny she’s been all award season, was simply awesome.

Can’t speak to who really deserved it (not seen any of the performances), but I’m sure there was a feeling that Gabby and Carey are young and will have their whole careers ahead of them to garner awards, so the nomination is the win for them. The ‘grand dames’ Mirren & Sweep were both very recent winners, and will probably be nominated for something as long as they continue their careers. Maybe Sandy split the difference?

  24. Jane Q. Doe says:

Also, was Sean Penn referring to the fact he forgot to thank his wife when he won the Oscar? That seemed really odd, especially since they’ve divorced since then. He seemed a little wasted to me.

  25. anon says:

i really love sandra bullock and love her even more everytime she opens her mouth and i’m glad she won but this movie was not a particularly interesting performance and the movie itself is just so self righteous and like someone else said a “white saviour” movie.

  26. CB Rawks says:

Sean Penn said another person that had been forgotten by the Academy. I took it to mean that someone was not nominated who should have been.

  27. bellaluna says:

I love Sandra and am thrilled she won. She seems like a very “real” person, doesn’t take her drama (or create drama) to the press for publicity, and is refreshing to watch. How nice for her to have won.

Her dress was beautiful, and as for her hair, it wasn’t the best I’ve seen it, but it HAS been pouring rain all day here.

  28. Dannni says:

Wow…didn’t expect this at all. She was pretty good in a mediocre film at best.

  29. bas says:

Anyone? Why did she say: ..And my lover Meryl Streep??????

  30. bellaluna says:

@ bas – they shared a kiss at one of the awards announcement thingy’s, I think, as a joke.

  31. dee says:

oh no, now Sandra is sporting that ‘frozen-I had too much Botox in the forehead look’. She’s starting to resemble Nicole Kidman’s frozen face.

  32. Cheyenne says:

    Love the dress.

  33. mollyb says:

Look, I like her as much as the next guy/girl, but there is no way her performance in that movie was the best preformance of the year. Please.

  34. Jillian says:

I really wanted Meryl to win. Sandy’s speech did end up making me tear up.

  35. Carol says:

bas, Sandra and Meryl tied for the critics’ choice award. Sandra got to the stage first and started joking that it was BS that she didn’t win it outright. Meryl got to the stage and they were still joking around. Sandra grabbed her to kiss her and Meryl went along with it. It was quite an internet sensation. That’s why Sandra called her a great kisser and her lover.

  36. Stephie says:

Love her. Glad she won, she gave a great speech.

  37. Iggles says:

    @ Chana:
“I’m glad she won, but not glad she won for this particular film.

And before anyone tells me that it isn’t true, just look up White Savior movies.”

I agree. I’m happy for Sandra, but I don’t like the film.

Same thing with Mo’Nique. I am so glad she won because I think she became the role. However I really dislike the movie she won for, “Precious”.

  38. Me says:

She’s great and I’m glad that she won! She looked beautiful.

  39. oia says:

i think she really deserved the oscar she is a very talented actress both mostly used to choose bad scripts she is also a very classy lady and very kind and smart congratulations sandra

  40. snapdragon says:

i have loved sandy ever since “speed” and i am happy to see her getting recognition for her acting. i haven’t seent his movie so i have no opinion about how “worthy” she is for the oscar, but i do think she is a good actress who gives thougthful performances, even in crapfests. she looked great, and i thought her speech was sweet and funny, and i teared up when she talked about her mom. i also like when she talked about “mothering babies, no matter where they come from” – is that a reference to her stepdaughter, i wonder? if so, SNAP!

  41. SamSam says:

I’m a huge Streep fan, but honestly don’t believe her performance in Julie & Julia was even worth an Oscar nomination, let alone a win. I didn’t see all of the movies nommed either, but I really did like the blind side, and I think it was an amazing role for Sandra, and Tim.

I’m also on the same wagon with George, like him but didn’t think his little airplane movie was worth being recognised with a nom. Jumped for joy when Bridges won.

  42. EMV says:

    white savior movie….interesting

  43. corine says:

I really think Sandra displayed true class and humor throughout the awards show season. She has been selling movie tickets without selling her love life, talking about sex/her exs/ relationships, doing nude shots in men’s magazines, no PR stunts, nor adopting some fake image. She seems like the real thing to me, and I’m very happy that she won. She deserves it.

  44. gen says:

Her dress was one of the best of the nights if not thee best.

Regarding White Savior movies, let’s not forget all those Old Black Wise Folk movies, or as I call em, Bagger Vance movies.

  45. Musey says:

I agree with everyone who’s torn between being happy for her and regretting that she won for a cliched White Savior movie. I adore Sandra Bullock and always have, and I really wish I could be completely happy for her, but Chana is right–this is only going to encourage people to keep making movies about Saintly White People Rescuing Troubled Non-White People, and we don’t need more of those.

Nor do we need any more Heroic White Person Joins Tribe Of Indigenous People And Becomes Better Than Them At Everything movies, which is why I am so very glad that Avatar didn’t win Best Picture. If it had, I’d have been utterly disgusted.

I am happy for Sandra, and I do think she’s a fantastic actress. I just wish she’d been nominated for something else. Hopefully, now that she’s an Oscar winner, she’ll have much better projects to choose from in future.

  46. CB Rawks says:

    @houseofbrat
Sandra is self-deprecating and not full of herself, so she is surprised and overcome by huge successes like this.
She is a wonderful actress and totally deserves this, and it was a really competitive category this year.
The best actresses are the ones that feel completely real, like Streep often does too. Maybe that’s why you don’t appreciate Sandra, she’s not over the top or ham-fisted like Miley Cyrus.

  47. Laney says:

her southern accent was truly horrible. the movie was not very good.

    wth?

    show is a scam

now go home and run into the filthy tattooed-up grease monkey porn dirty d*ck husband you are so proud of…

    lol

Sandra Bullock has absolutely no talent! Along with Cameron Diaz and Katherine Heigl, she’s the worst actress in Hollywood!!! Her winning the Oscar was a joke. It’s also an insult to talented actresses who actually EARNED the Oscar, like Charlize Theron in “Monster”. It’s pretty grim that the Oscars are getting this bad, handing out Academy Awards to people who can barely tastefully appeal, much less act.
