‘And Just Like That’ series finale ended with a whimper, and fans are not happy

SPOILERS for the And Just Like That finale.

A few weeks ago, Michael Patrick King announced that the final episodes of And Just Like That’s Season 3 would be the final episodes of the series entirely. He claimed that they had told the story they wanted to tell and that he and Sarah Jessica Parker had agreed to end AJLT. Reportedly, though, the ratings were in the toilet and HBO Max pulled the plug because the show was so expensive and such a flop. Still, AJLT had devoted “fans” who hate-watched every episode, and those fans were worked up about the series finale, which dropped last night. Apparently, the end for these beloved characters involved poop, Victor Garbor and sadness? Anyway, SJP spoke to the NY Times about the end of the show, and the Times didn’t have the guts to ask her why she was so hellbent on ruining SATC’s legacy.

NYT: Why end the show now?
SJP:
Because that’s where the story ended. We could have gone on doing coffee shops. There’s a million ways to do it that are easy and familiar and fun, but feel exploitative to us. We felt this was the honorable thing to do. It’s very easy to stay. It’s where we’re all happy. But you have to be principled when you make these very difficult, agonizing decisions because there’s a lot of people who are affected.

[From The NY Times]

“There’s a million ways to do it that are easy and familiar and fun, but feel exploitative to us…” Like, this WHOLE series was exploiting the love and familiarity we have with those characters from Sex and the City. It felt like such a narcissistic exercise. But whatever. I stopped watching after Season 1 because it was so awful. My timeline is full of hate for the finale though:

Dammed if you do…Dammed if you don’t! I can’t WAIT to watch this season of AJLT…which I haven’t seen because I’m not giving HBO/Netflix and NOBODY else a dime until I pay down these bills! I ✨️ADORE✨️ Carrie & her messiness and her fashion…EVERYTHING ❤️ about her…and will miss her and her crew that rode with her until the end…and quite frankly…I ❤️ the way the show ended…which aligned PERFECTLY with my OWN reality I have chosen to embrace & ❤️ like I did so many Men in my past

The sh!tshow (quite literally) of a finale, is all the proof needed that this was a cancellation and not a mutual parting of ways.

The AJLT writers could not have given a more middle finger salute to the audience, than with that scatological epilogue.

    The mind truly boggles…….😯😯😯

  3. Tessa says:

I wonder if the writers planned a real relationship between Carrie and Duncan, other than the one night stand after the writing sessions. He faded out very quickly. and disappeared. The writers tried to “wind up” plots to no avail.

Mario Cantone has moved on to co-host movie presentations on TCM. He’s fantastic and I look forward to these shows and his other appearances.

I’m sorry, maybe I’m the only one but this TV series has always been ludicrous. Never enjoyed even when it was called Sex in the city.

    • Paintergal says:

You are not the only one. I never understood the love for such unlikeable characters.

    • Tarte Au Citron says:

Same. I wanted to love SATC though but Carrie just got sooooo whiny and annoying.

    • Mrs.Krabapple says:

I hated SATC. To me it was a show created by misogynists who wanted to portray women in the worst possible way. So it wasn’t just bad, it was offensive.

  5. Grant says:

I haven’t seen the finale yet. Controversial opinion perhaps but I thought the third season was finally starting to come together into something that sort of resembled the OG series. Sad to see that they weren’t able to stick the landing!

  6. Nicki says:

There’s a good essay in The Atlantic, where the writer suggests ajlt just couldn’t forgive the characters for aging. Satc became a train wreck starting with that first film, imho, and even the series finale, that had Big suddenly be madly in love with Carrie, just never rang true.

    • Tessa says:

I cringed over the finale with Big begging Carrie to be with him saying that he was like a “needy chick” in that scene in front of her apartment.. Totally out of character. The ending was very rushed. with Carrie moving from one man to another in a nanosecond.

  7. Carnivalbaby says:

I can’t say I am unhappy this trainwreck is done. A forever fan of SATC I too watched AJLT and cut ties after Season 1. The movies were bad enough, but seeing what they did to Miranda, Steve and Brady; no Samantha and Stanford (RIP Willie Garson) I bailed early. Now I can forever think that Sam got back together with Smith and they are having the time of their lives in Europe. I would indeed tune into that show. Cheers to Kim Cattrall!

    • Chrissy says:

I’d like to think that Kim Catrall is laughing her ass off as we speak! She was always the best part of SATC.

  8. Gemini says:

I thought it was a good final episode. It was a realistic end to the Carry Bradshaw saga which is an accomplishment considering how unrealistic and out of touch the whole AJLT series has been.

I couldn’t help but wonder how marriage as an institution takes so much space as a building block of capitalism and is served to us as entertainment. The Gilded Age, AJLT, Royal family and their 50 shades of marriages, the reality dating shows, etc.

    • ParkRunMum says:

this is to @Gemini, you made my day with that one particular observation!!! “ how marriage as an institution takes so much space as a building block of capitalism and is served to us as entertainment”…. 100% and then some. That *was* the genius of the first series, or, to be correct, series 1-7 and a half, that started 25 years ago or thereabouts. It is difficult to convey just *how* radical and groundbreaking it was to see a show about four single women just cycling through men and mining the experience for life wisdom and hilarity without the idea that any of them would either a) settle for a suburban sort of quicksand vs personal integrity & autonomy, or, b) get bitter. And then mine that for comedy. This is what was *so* revolutionary about the show: embracing autonomy vs codependency opened the arc of the show, the storylines and the characters, up to *so* many other dilemmas — personal, financial, cultural, sexual, political — that simply did not register on a popular platform with the heft of HBO. Not before SATC. It really did break the mold. They had to break new ground in order to render these characters’ lives in a way that was realistic, given the premise, which was that they were *not* married, and yet not for one moment were they playing the little lost girl who just hopes for one day to dawn with a man or whatever. It’s so often the case that sitcoms portray women in unhappy or half assed marriages for laughs, as a kind of consolation prize. Which begs the question, consolation for what? For not being alone? Cause. Being single does not mean being alone. So the relationships these characters had with each other set the standard for all the others. They kept each other honest. They did not enable each other to make bad choices. And that was really inspirational, for a while, when I was just out of uni. It’s not so revolutionary now. But there are moments in AJLT, especially season 3, when they really get their mojo back. Not so much the other two seasons. Not as much. But this season, it really did feel like they managed to dig deeper, and they did not swerve the hard choices. They did them justice, they just hit their stride too late.

  9. Tessa says:

Sarah Jessica Parker series called divorce was better than and just like that but it got canceled.

  10. wow says:

The episode was brutal and boring somehow. Mia is not likeable. Miranda seems to go out with a life of regret which is such sad to her fiercely independent original. Charlotte stay Charlotte I will give her that. But the toilet scene was horrible. How Steve still takes jabs at Miranda was not the sweet Steve I grew to love. Mark should take his plane far from all of them. Carrie KNOWS how to use and ipad and NO in no way in hell would anyone get shamed in NYC because you’re eating alone.

    Fans? This show has fans?
