Charlize Theron on her rose boobs dress “I loved it!”

I’m not really familiar with designers or labels if they don’t have obvious logos, but I said to Kaiser that I was pretty sure Charlize Theron was wearing John Galliano for Dior last night at the Oscars. That’s because I remember Charlize’s disastrous 2006 emerald Oscar gown with the giant bow on the shoulder and reams of fabric. She wore it with a bouffant ‘up do and too much sparkly jewelry and looked like a little girl’s idea of how to dress for the ball.

Charlize wasn’t as overdone last night, but she did look ridiculous in a lilac strapless gown with giant pink flowers where her boobs should be. Unsurprisingly, the dress was designed by the same man responsible for her 2006 monstrosity, John Galliano. Charlize is good friends with Galliano and accompanied the designer to the Costume Institute Gala ball in 2006. (Galliano was dressed as a sneering pirate for that event.) Now she’s gracing many “worst dressed” lists and will be forever known as Charlize “rose boobs” Theron, but she doesn’t seem to mind. Charlize says she just “loved” that dress.

Charlize Theron wasn’t so chic at Sunday’s Academy Awards … according to fashion critics.

Bloggers ripped on her amethyst and lilac bustier gown with rose and draped detail, created specially for her by John Galliano for Dior.

“Almost every year somebody wears something off-the-wall crazy to the Oscars, and this year the unfortunate honor goes to Charlize Theron,” sniped Eonline. “Yep, those are her lady lumps wrapped in lilac rosettes, courtesy of Dior Haute Couture. This one’s going down in the history books along with the swan dresses and pirate costumes.”

Added The Orange County Register: “We hated the weird rosebud pasties on her strapless, flowing lavender and mauve gown. All the attention in the wrong place.”

Critics at New Jersey’s Star Ledger said the outfit make them “gouge” their eyes out. The Oscar winner “should have taken her bulls-eyes, er, gown and gone home,” they wrote.

But Theron, 34, likely won’t be offended. Asked on the red carpet about her gown, she told UsMagazine.com: “I just loved this dress!”

[From US Weekly]

Charlize loved the attention that ridiculous dress got her. If she wore something elegant but forgettable we wouldn’t be talking as much about her. As it is, she wore something butt ugly but not hideous, and it drew our attention to her chest. That dress was a win-win for Charlize, even if her involvement with Dior has cost her other sponsors in the past.

In other news about Charlize, there’s still buzz over her maybe-romance with Jeremy Renner, but as far as we can tell there was only anticipation about their appearance at the Oscars and we haven’t heard about them canoodling at any after parties -yet. Renner previously admitted that he hangs out with Charlize but said she’s just a “friend.” “We’re crazy about each other. I can go hang out with her and play her piano and sip Scotch.” Sounds like more than just friends to me. I bet Renner got to experience those roses up close and personal after the Oscars.

Well, she’s the only one that loved that dress!

  2. Oenix says:

It could have worked with larger breasts, fabulous neck jewelry and perhaps with her hair down….

  3. Rachel says:

It was very Princess Leia/Slave girl attends the ball.

  4. EMV says:

I usually lover her dresses, but this one is BAD.The style,color..everything is just not becoming. Sorry Galliano

  5. Ron says:

When she first flashed on the screen last night at the party I was at, there was a silence. A silence of shock. I broke the silence by yelping, “Fire your gay!!” That dress was a avante garde project from sophmore design 201. Why didn’t Galliano just put a third flower on her snatch and call it the Georgia O’Keefe dress to make it perfection? Awful.

  6. kelbear says:

I am trying to tell myself that maybe it would have looked much better on someone else…

  7. Tia C says:

I don’t see what’s so terrible about this dress. I think it’s kind of pretty, even though the boob roses are a bit odd. Of course I know pathetically little about fashion, so there you go.

  8. leah says:

The dress seems odd, but whatever.

What I don’t get is this: if she and Stuart Townsend did break up, and she and Jeremy Renner are dating, does no one in Hollywood grieve? Don’t these people need time to get over long term relationships? They “all” (gross oversimplification, I know) seem to bounce from one relationship to another, which I just do not understand.

I think to say she wore it for attention is stretching it a bit. Maybe she really did just love it. She has always seemed a little nerdy to me (despite her cool beauty) and this kind of ensemble (and the other dress/hair combo at previous awards) shows that whoever is styling her needs a telling off. Many of the world’s most ‘beautiful’ celebs have zero sense of personal style and are dressed to suit the designer. Even if she picked it, someone should have told her the hot cross bun boobs were a no no.

    Lol @ “fire your gay!”

  10. Linda says:

I really loved both those dresses! Sorry.

  11. Stephie says:

The side angle view (pic 3 in the thumbnails) doesn’t look half bad but the rest just make me giggle. I’d be mortified in something like this. She has cajones.

  12. LOVE ANGELINA says:

If Theron liked this dress then she has ZERO taste. It was a terrible ugly dress that did nothing for her. It didn’t make her prettier or anything…if you get dressed up for the Oscars and your dress does nothing but make people go WTF, then what was the point sweetie?

  13. Novaraen says:

The lilac colors were pretty…but yeah…the roses on her boobs were too much. I imagine the dress without them and it would have been gorgeous. They kinda look like giant labias…lol.

  14. Ellen Smith says:

Dress – horrible. Red lips with mauve dress – terrible mistake.

  15. Maritza says:

    Ugly dress!

  16. archiepelago says:

Talking about fashion, I noticed the trend for women was the strapless dresses and for those without boobs and with protruding collar bones (ie most of Hollywood), all this does is accentuate any top of arm or underarm fat. I have noticed that fake boobs seem to be passe now, with so many flat chested actresses (me being one of those, I rejoice!) but those strapless numbers need a bit of boob to fill them and when the bust part of the dress has 3 inches of room gaping between skin and dress, it’s not flattering.

Also, what is with the guys chewing gum, not only on the red carpet (I’m looking at you Jake Gyll and Morgan Freeman) or worse, while presenting Oscars (Sam Worthington). Eew, just eew.

  17. Kim says:

Shes beautiful and peole would have talked about her had she worn a nice dress. Wearing this for attention? At the Oscars? Seems a little desperate.

  18. Mairead says:

I love the colour – it’s different and refreshing from that blah beige so many of them insist on wearing. The bodice detail was awful. It would be marginally less horrific if there were more rosettes perhaps, but better without that class of embellishment at all.

Charlize, you’re a goddess, but perhaps it’s time to get Stuart back if John Galliano is going to have this much influence over you. Looks like she needs the grumpy-paddy counterbalance.

  19. Camille says:

I can’t decide what was worse, the rose boobs, or the bright red lipstick with a purple and pink dress. Hideous.

  20. Chana says:

She loves it because her friend made it and because it’s getting her attention.

The dress is ugly. It looks like a prom dress. It looks like any number of prom dresses you see around that time of year at the mall-satin, awful color, rosettes.

  21. Eden says:

    Fugly!

  22. ThunderC*nt says:

Very symmetrical face but her doc went overboard on the nose job. Never gonna be an icon or legend b/c her face is waifish w/o special eyes and her fashion choices suck. So much for legend.

  23. ThunderC*nt says:

Please, she’s no Godess. Grace Kelly was a Godess. Chances are you can pull Godess off better than her and Gwyneth Paltrow. Plain Jane ‘Godess’.

  24. Solveig says:

I already wrote in another thread that I liked her dress.
I like the colors, the shape, and I also said that it is classy in a sort of cyberpunkish way.
Thumbs up for a woman who’s never boring.

  25. ViktoryGin says:

Tell me that she and Stuart Townsend didn’t go the way of the dodo. I usually don’t give a flying fuck about celebity coupledom, but I really like those two together. It took me a year to forgive her for stealing my future husband. Sigh…. As for that dress, though forsuredly fug, at least it’s a dress and not a moribund animal, pirate, or 7th grade solar system model.

  26. canadianchick says:

    @ron bahahaha “fire your gay”
Th dress is fug-when I saw it I imagined the outcry and mad typing on the fashion blogs.

Right about the gum, c’mon Sarah Jessica Parker, spit it out and comb your hair!

  27. Eileen Yover says:

If the “roses” would have went all the way together in the middle and then maybe went further down making it more of a bodice, it wouldn’t be so glaringly a booby cover. It could have been gorgeous if they would have done that and made it silvers or a better color. Oh well-she’s still drop dead gorgeous at the end of the day…so no loss for her!

  28. I Choose Me says:

Ya know I don’t know if it’s the angle in that pic or the fact that Charlize is working that dress opinions be damned but I think I might like it after all. It’s a lovely colour and it’s different and I gotta admire her sass.

  29. nana says:

she love it and comfortable with it, period.

  30. M says:

I could forgive the dress if she at least matched her makeup with it. The red lips are awful.

  31. Peter Graham says:

Lighten up. folks. I think the dress was fun. Certainly it was daring and different, but we should celebrate those who are willing to take chances. Charlize is a beautiful woman and certainly made a statement. Guess whose pic is appearing on every website and newspaper aticle discussing the red carpet? And not all of the comment was bad – the Daily Telegraph in London voted it one of the best on show. I also liked the dress, although Cameron Diaz got top marks from me.

  32. brisa says:

Leave her alone you fukers!!!!She’s my imaginary best friend. hahaha I told her not to wear it but she’s so subborn.
    Te dije cabrona!!!!LOL

  33. Katie says:

“I could forgive the dress if she at least matched her makeup with it. The red lips are awful.”
    I agree this!

  34. KateMoss says:

I love her. She’s so fabulous. Thanks for the posting.
