Jason Isaacs gets ‘starstruck’ and ‘always feels like an imposter’

The last time we checked in with Jason Isaacs, he was gossiping to Vulture magazine about his career regrets and how he hopes to land some commercials. Jason is nominated for his first-ever Emmy award for his role on White Lotus, and he’s still giving great interviews. While at the Televerse Festival last weekend, Jason told People that, although he’s been in many mainstream and prestigious projects, he still has imposter syndrome and gets “completely starstruck” at award ceremonies.

“I get completely starstruck by everybody whose work I admire, and not just the other people in my category, in every category, and all the people who aren’t nominated,” the Harry Potter alum said. “There’s a lot of extraordinary talent around. I always feel like an imposter.”

“I will feel like an imposter on Emmy night too, and I kind of look forward to it and I’m kind of scared of it,” he continued, adding that it will still be “lovely” and ”exciting” to see everybody at the awards show.

Despite previously winning awards at the Satellite Awards, Independent Spirit Awards, Empire Awards and other shows for his roles in Case Histories, Mass and Star Trek Discovery throughout his decades-long career, this year’s Emmy nod marks Isaacs’ first Emmy nomination.

“I try not to think about it honestly. I don’t mean that it’s not incredibly flattering and lovely. I just know that I’ve been doing this job for a very, very long time, and very rarely do you get this kind of attention,” Isaacs said. “And it’s not a coincidence. I didn’t do anything better or different than I normally do. I just had a fantastic part. Mike White creates these three-dimensional surprising human beings that behave in the kind of jagged or particular ways they do, and asks of all the actors in it to go to places they don’t normally go. And so it’s such a privilege.”

Let me first address Jason’s comments about being starstruck. I think it’s so endearing that he’s been in some of the biggest franchises in film, television, stage, and video game history, and still shows up at award shows freaking out over the fact that he’s sitting in the same room as people like Harrison Ford, Sterling K. Brown, and Quinta Brunson. That is such a refreshing thing to hear from a veteran actor. As for him always feeling like he doesn’t belong there, Jason having imposter syndrome is also so freaking relatable. I think it happens to a lot of us. I get imposter syndrome all of the time, and I’m truly in awe of those who don’t. Teach me your ways! I used to think about it as a confidence thing, but as I get older, I realize that it’s more deeply rooted in self-esteem.

Anyway, congrats to Jason on his first Emmy nom! His category (Best Supporting Actor in Drama Series) is interesting because out of the seven nominees, three are from White Lotus and three are from Severance. James Marsden is the lone wolf nominee for Paradise. It will be interesting to see how the votes break, and whether or not any of the two bigger show nominees will cancel each other out.

I became a big fan of his after White Lotus, not just as an actor but as a person. Some think he’s too gossipy but I find him refreshing. I think he is being sincere about the Imposter Syndrome. I can relate to that too. I went to law school and often felt that way. For years after finishing I had nightmares where they called me and told me I had technically never graduated and needed to pass one more test or take one more class, lol.

He was pretty memorable as Draco’s dad.

Loved him in Death of Stalin ☺️

agreed!!! Death of Stalin is hysterically funny and decent history to boot. Anyone who can pull of playing Marshall Zhukov and revel in it cannot be suffering from imposter syndrome, unless it’s the kind that attends a theatrical heavyweight in lightweight Hollywood. That cast was brilliant because much of it was British, IMHO.

He’s an incredible actor from Harry Potter to the Patriot. I mean the audience hated his character in the Patriot.
