After the first rush of excitement and buzz about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s engagement, it actually felt like they’re trying to lower the temperature a little bit. For the past week, there’s been a consistent thread of stories in the vein of “Taylor and Travis are not going to have a big wedding” and “this isn’t going to be a splashy affair.” According to Travis – on last week’s New Heights pod – he and Tay haven’t started planning anything yet, and I would imagine they’re still looking at their schedules and they’re stuck on “when” and perhaps “where.” Well, in case you needed to hear it from People Magazine, that’s what their cover story is all about.
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce may have shared their engagement news with the world, but their actual wedding won’t be a such a public affair. A source tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue that the pop star and the Kansas City Chiefs tight end “want to keep it more private” when they tie the knot.
“It will definitely be a private affair and not a spectacle,” the source says. “They both have a close circle of friends, and they’ll respect their privacy.”
Swift and Kelce, both 35, announced their engagement on Instagram on Aug. 26 after two years of dating, sharing sweet photos from the proposal with the caption, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.” Kelce popped the question with an old mine brilliant cut diamond — a ring the source says Swift is “still showing off.”
“She’s incredibly happy,” the source adds. “It’s all just perfect.”
As for wedding planning, the couple are taking things one step at a time. Kelce said on New Heights that he hasn’t thought for “one second” about a bachelor party, but promised that it’s “gonna go crazy” when they do get to wedding planning. “That,” he said, “is the next step.”
One more word about the ring – what impressed me was not the size, cut or price tag. What impressed me was that Travis knows and understands Taylor’s taste. It looks like the kind of ring she would have picked out for herself. Which is the real prize for Taylor and for all women: to be known, to have someone who understands us and knows our preferences and tastes. As for the wedding planning… I’d love a spectacle worthy of their level of celebrity, but yeah, I don’t think Taylor would want that. I really hope we get to see her dress though, because I feel like that’s going to be THE most princessy wedding gown ever.

Have to admit part of me was looking forward to a big affair, but I understand the desire to keep it small.
I hope they pull it off without any of us knowing.
She is pretty expert at being under cover when she wants to.
And his friends and family seem so respectful of that.
And i too would LOVE to see a few pics of the dress, and the happy couple with friends and family at the reception… well after it happens.
I agree with the ring- it’s not MY style or a lot of people’s, but it has Taylor’s name written all over it. He made a very thoughtful choice and that’s why her ring, although EYE would hate it, looks SO good on her <3
Yes, it isn’t my taste, but it is perfect for her.
How do we know she didn’t have input? I mean, I had input on my ring. We looked at different rings and I didn’t know which one I would get, but at least then he knew my tastes. It didn’t take away the surprise or romance, I just knew that I’d be pleased looking at the ring on my hand every day.
The guys I know who did a good job picking out a ring either had some ring conversations with future wife or talked with friends and family who’d had those conversations.
That was the ‘we aren’t going to be throwing a quasi royal wedding or taking over Venice with a pile of celebs we barely know so can you all calm down’ from her team. I suspect if their plans work, we’ll just get an Instagram post that’s kind of the bookend to the engagement one.
Making some predictions now, I suspect the ring will set the tone for the whole thing – it will take place somewhere interesting and not traditionally celeb or used for weddings, just like the ring is from a small IYKYK kind of jeweller. I also think she might pick a smaller up and coming designer for the dress, rather than your usual celeb go-tos – she wore Nicole + Felicia for some gowns on her tour so maybe a designer like that?
He did a really good job with the ring, even if it isn’t to everyone’s taste. It’s big bit doesn’t overtake her whole finger, and because it’s in a very secure setting with a wide but flat cut, it actually looks like she could wear it as part of her daily life. With what his dad spilled, I think she knew the ring had been designed and purchased a while ago, and I suspect she probably at the very least picked the designer. I get the sense Travis left to his own devices would have just run straight at Lorraine Schwartz or Neil Lane with an open cheque book. But maybe I’m underestimating him.
Can you imagine being the ring designer though – going from being an indie fine jeweller to knowing that you’re designing something that will transform your career and could end up being something that could one day end up in a museum or setting records on the block at Sotheby’s or Christie’s? I wonder if we’ll start seeing her work show up on more red carpets etc soon.
I was really impressed with the ring designer when she started blowing up because of the news she posted all these other indie fine jewelry designers to make sure they got known and in on the excitement.
A close friend of mine got engaged while on holiday a couple of years ago. As soon as they posted pictures and then when they returned and I saw the ring in person, I knew it wasn’t going to last. It was absolutely nothing like what she’d always told us she wanted or something any of us would have advised her ex to go with. They got engaged in January and they were done by that autumn. People might find it superficial but if you’re planning on wearing a piece of jewellery for the rest of your life, it’s damn well important that it’s something you love wearing and reflects your personality. As comments above, Taylor’s wouldn’t be something I’d choose but it’s perfect for her and it’s clear that either he knows her that well or they discussed what she wanted long before taking the steps to get engaged.
