It’s been interesting, to say the least, to watch royalists fumble and scramble to criticize Prince Harry’s $1.5 million donation to a worthy British charity focused on helping vulnerable British youths. We’ve already heard variations of: donating to charity is against royal protocol; why is Harry publicizing a donation if he wants privacy; he’s only trying to improve his image because of the emotional-support polls! It strikes me that absolutely none of these dumbasses has admitted that they were lying in all of their palace-encouraged reporting over the Sussexes’ finances. How can Harry be broke if he’s personally donating a seven figure sum to charity? Which brings me to this Royalist piece in the Daily Beast, in which Tom Sykes magically skips the acknowledgement of Harry’s flush finances and rages about how Harry only made his money by selling family “secrets.”
Prince Harry returned to the U.K. this week, ostensibly to promote several charitable causes close to his heart. Unfortunately for him, all anyone in the media wanted to talk about was whether he would see his brother or dad during the trip, which runs until Thursday. The problem was graphically illustrated when Harry himself joked about the difficulties of “challenging” sibling relationships at the WellChild Awards in London on Monday night. The off-hand quip was soon leading royal news feeds around the world.
The Duke of Sussex, of course, would have liked nothing better than all the attention to be on the boy he was talking to, 17-year-old Declan Bitmead. Declan is a hero. He suffered a horrific reaction to what should have been routine antibiotic treatment that resulted in him losing 96 percent of his skin. He was cared for in a specialist burns clinic while his skin slowly recovered; it’s still very fragile, and he has also lost much of his sight.
But Harry really should have known what would happen if he raised the subject of family dynamics while chatting to him. Asking if his brother “drove him mad” while noting that sharing the same school with your brother—as he did with Prince William—can make it “more challenging” was an unforced error. It felt like Harry fell into the trap of trying so hard not to talk about something that you end up blurting it out at the worst moment possible (in Harry’s case, this means in front of the cameras).
What was supposed to be a joke to put Declan at ease became an invitation for the global media to rehash the details of Harry’s resentment of growing up in his sibling’s shadow, or William once telling him to pretend he didn’t know him at school at Eton. And here lies Harry’s curse. His family feud sold spectacularly well for him. Now he can’t unsell it.
Having written books and produced films that monetized the conflict, he now finds himself unable to turn the interest off, no matter how much he might want his philanthropy—such as donating more than a million dollars from his own pocket to youth services on Tuesday—to be the story. While his seven-figure check drew praise in some quarters, others derided it as a self-serving exercise in hypocrisy, noting that it was funded by the very memoir and Netflix deals that tore his family apart.
For all his professed reverence for his grandmother—he made a point of visiting her grave on Monday—it is hard to forget that she was explicitly opposed at the so-called Sandringham Summit in 2020 to Harry and Meghan being “half in, half out” of the royal family. Yet here he is, living off commercial deals while seeking to resume the charitable patronage of a working royal. It is precisely the hybrid role Elizabeth forbade.
First of all, while there was coverage of Harry’s offhand remark about “challenging” brothers, it was a minor story which got secondary play to all of the other stories about Harry’s visit. Keep in mind, nearly every British outlet is doing a live-blog of Harry’s visit, and royal reporters are trailing Harry, not William. Judging solely from the volume of coverage, Harry is being treated like the most important royal, with everyone hanging on his every word and action. It’s insane. Also bonkers? “Living off commercial deals while seeking to resume the charitable patronage of a working royal…” For the millionth time, “charity work” is not exclusively royal. Anyone can serve, service is universal.
Incidentally, the second half of this Royalist piece is all about whether Charles will meet Harry, and how Charles has brought in a seasoned diplomat named Sir Simon Rycroft as his deputy private secretary. Rycroft “is thought to have been brought in at least partly to smooth tensions with Harry that [Clive] Alderton has exacerbated.” Then Sykes mentions once again the real story buried in all of the Harry-Charles speculation: that Charles and William barely speak, that all of their communications run through third-parties and that their relationship is “fragile” to say the least. They constantly make it sound like Charles has to walk on eggshells around Huevo.

Was Queen Elizabeth in good health and able to navigate a messy family quarrel by the time of Sandringham summit? If not, who came up with the all in or all out ultimatum?
William did, not QEII…I commented on this yesterday in another thread
Charles is above Will in rank. Will should have been not allowed to attend.
Do you remember which one? I’d like to read it but don’t want to search each possible thread.
It was that other guy, the one Harry called The Fly (I think) that came up with the Sandringham Debacle. He retired last year I think. I can’t remember his real name.
Was she ever able to navigate a messy family quarrel?
Philip did the lion’s share of that, I think. I think TQ was a person who tried her best to be a good person, but she was very inward looking, and quite jealous at places. I think she probably would have supported half in half out; I think she had regrets for how Margaret’s life went and while she was certainly blinkered, she also did grow as a human – just not enough and fast enough to effect meaningful change for herself or her family. I think her letting William slack was an attempt to do better for him and for whatever challenges he was/is rumored to face. Just nobody dreamed how unrepentant William would be. He’s found the Trump hack – just don’t care when they try to get you to do or not do something and then nothing sticks.
If someone in the government really did take out Diana, they would have done better to hold their fire and choose William instead. There will not be a monarchy after him and who knows what else he’ll destabilize as he takes down the monarchy.
according to Harry in Spare, there were a few different options up for discussion, but somehow that day the only two options presented to QEII were all in or all out. She didn’t really nix the half in/half out idea, she wasn’t presented with it. Remember the lie about the printers or some such BS.
I’m in the UK and everyone was talking about the donation yesterday. Nobody cares about a joke Harry made about siblings!
I’ll second this. All the news channels were talking about Harry, his visit and his donation. William hardly got a look in. When he did it was just a quick clip, a few words and straight back to Harry. 🙂
If this made the news cycle in Canada, I missed it. As for charity work/donations, anyone can do either or both at any time. Imagine donating your own cash money…and being ridiculed for it. WanK should be doing more, but fake hair and clenched fists is the low bar expectation. I do wonder if all the press around Harry is done to rile up Chuckles and Pegs?
Correct me if I’m wrong (just a poor here) but rich people donate for the purpose of tax write-offs. Hence, rich people give lots of money away to charity.
But royalty doesn’t pay taxes. Or maybe they do so selectively. So I can’t fathom why charity is presumed to be the exclusive domain of royals.
Yeah, agree that I hadn’t even heard the “challenging siblings” story so it’s not something that seems to be breaking through. Mostly, I saw cute pictures of Harry with the families at wellchild and then heard about his donation. The majority of people who donate to charities have jobs and work in commercial ventures bc that’s how they make money to be able to give money. It’s not that deep. And at the end of the day, Harry would never have sold his story if the Windsors had protected them. Instead Harry’s family signaled to the tabloids to go full-destruction while leaking and planting against him, his wife and his children. That’s always been the original sin in all of this. As Sykes knows full-well. What information was he given back in the day to stop writing about William and Rose Hanbury?
Hmmm. Didn’t Chuckles write a book about how crappy his mother was to him? Didn’t he monetize that information from his book. Did he donate anything from proceeds of that book? Doesn’t Chuckles have a deal with Netflix? So do as I say not as I do with them. They are so f**king angry that Harry gave his personal money to a charity and that makes the rest of them look bad. The grifters and hoarders of wealth give nothing.
He cooperated with Jonathan Dimbleby. Charles wanted an authorized biography and chose Dimblebly. It was based on Dimbleby having access to Charles correspondence plus hours of interviews. I don’t think Charles donated any proceeds. He never apologized publicly about the book to his parents. It was a Poor Charles themed book,
”Woe is Charles” seems to be a theme he’s invented for himself and his life would have been 1000% better had he not. Pluck yourself up, Chuck, and go forward with your sons instead of into yourself with your vile wife.
So Charles can’t get on with either of his sons, and they have completely different characters. So it isn’t the children, it’s the father who gets it all wrong. William must be too much like his father.
At least its his earned money, not money made by sellinf access via dinners and meetings and its not carrier bag cash given to charites. and its coming from his own earnings. i can’t even, at least he isn’t turning up with a couple of brownies and a smile
Don’t forget the upper echelons of the British class system look down on “work.” It’s so…proletarian, so serf-like. To them, actual jobs and skills are gross.
“Why work for it when you can steal it from someone weaker?”
-The entire monarchy & aristocracy
Wow. Also, at least he’s never been part of a SELLING HONORS for titles.
Right??
Does Tom Sykes really want to start a discussion about the sources of the royal family’s wealth??
They act like the monarchy didn’t profit from slavery and invading other territories to steal their resources from the locals.
Tom Sucks needs to be careful complaining about how Harry made his money. How exactly did the Unroyals make theirs? And how do they continue to make money? Wasn’t there something about moldy rental units and exploiting charities and public services?
Charitable organizations started by celebrities, NPOs and companies exist in the UK correct? Because from their reporting you would think that literally the only money from charity comes from the Royal Foundation or the Kings Trust. Most money donated to charity comes from people giving it after earning it themselves.
And I wish they would stop with the family secrets nonsense. Him recounting his life isn’t a ” family secret”. Meghan recounting a horrible work experience, because remember that’s what The Firm is, isn’t divulging secrets. This idea that they should have gotten permission to discuss their lived experience, while people make money off of commenting on their thoughts and desires and plans is disgusting.
It’s amusing to me though how they write about how his quip dominated Royal news feeds. As if they have no control over what they write. They said it was such sadness too, oh I’m sure Harry would have loved the attention was on Declan like it couldn’t be if they would just write about that instead of rehashing his relationship with William. It bothers them as much as it bothers William that he won’t just come back and become fodder for them.
🎯
Also, Well Child isn’t even a “royal” patronage, which is why Harry was able to keep it. So Sykes is arguing that a private citizen shouldn’t donate to an independent charity?
Apparently no one in the UK donates any time or money to any charitable organization except for the royals. /s
I mean, do these people realize how they sound? How patronizing and condescending? The idea that charity work (and what the royals do barely counts as that IMO) is only for the royals is just…..well, it cuts out all the people who are actually running these organizations on a day to day basis and everyone who donates.
Hey, royalty has survived since the Middle Ages because they controlled the church and the spreading of news, now called media. It thrives in lies, and many people lack reading and critical thinking.
Hey Tom, how is it OK for KP and Jason Knauf to spread lies about the Sussexes in that under-the-table pact with the tabloids, but Harry shouldn’t speak about his family being on the receiving end of that abuse, openly and with his own voice?
Also, Harry donated £1.2m of the proceeds from his memoir Spare to Sentebale. So there’s that.
Sykes tries so hard to straddle the fence between sucking up to William and what he sees with his own eyes that he sort of looks like an idiot. I appreciate that Sykes brings up Bulliam’s Eton behavior, and he doesn’t even try to deny that the “palace secrets” Harry wrote about are real, actual, ugly secrets. But Sykes keeps spewing the palace line that Harry is monetizing his grievances, when in fact Harry wrote Spare and did Oprah with Meghan in order to get their side of the story out after years of private and underhanded abuse from both palaces, including the palaces secretly briefing against them to the tabloids.
It’s amazing that many people don’t see this. They all forget to put on their thinking caps.
Prince Harry pulled the curtains back and spoke his truth. In order for him to be able to live an authentic life, he did what he had to do. Those who bemoan and hold this against him, live in the shadows speaking through palace sources. This is exactly why he can walk among Kings, Queens and the common folks because they know he is authentic.
I totally agree. It was a smart and necessary move to write his book and do the interviews. The absurd axiom ‘never complain, never explain’ went out the window with Charles and William. Their actions have put Harry and Meghan in very real harms way and they have done this on purpose. They are vile people! Neil Basu, the outgoing assistant commissioner of specialist operations at Scotland Yard in 2022 said “Prince Harry and Meghan Markle faced “very real” threats to their safety, including threats emanating from the far right”. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/prince-harry-meghan-faced-real-threats-living-uk-former-top-police-off-rcna59323
This same story was carried in a number of media. Harry needed to provide his record and his words to protect himself and his family.
It’s the media that is making his sibling joke a bigger deal than it is. Also I firmly believe that the queen was being manipulated in the end. She would be thrilled to see how happy Harry is now. You can’t fake real genuine kindness. Harry got it from his mom! The windsors are cold, calculating people.
Cognitive decline at that age – even without dementia – is a reality. She was easy to manipulate because she was to weak and fragile, which impacts the ability to understand information.
What particularly made her easier to manipulate was losing her two stalwart, dependable advisors circa 2017. Philip finally retired, to the country, and very shortly afterwards, Charles succeeded in removing TQ’s long time, respected private secretary, Christopher Geidt, and elevating Edward Young in his place. And Young was Charles’ man from the start. Forget which one he was of the three insects Harry mentions in Spare.
Yes. Yes. Making money off of slavery, the subjugation of hundreds of millions in the UK and around the world, and tax evasion are the honorable, royal ways to make money. Boooo commercial ventures! Boooo supporting at-risk youth! Boooo trying to do good in the world!
And don’t forget how the notion of royalty started! Self-entitled “kings” who plundered and looted lands, murdered, and controlled their vassals. Used the church for legitimacy and lied they were anointed by god during feudalism in Europe.
They have a hard time believing that Harry does charity work because he enjoys it and believes in the charities he participates and donates too. They see it as him trying to “Audition” in coming back. They really are telling on themselves that the RF is only checking a box and doing photo ops because that is what is expected.
They want Harry and Meghan to be the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, living off scraps from the family and sponging off wealthy friends and going to endless parties. Nothing involving any real initiative or generating their own wealth and being independent.
I’m pretty sure the Duke of Windsor received money from the RF. Harry just gets lies…..
What is amazing about this argument that Harry as a mostly private citizen shouldn’t make donations to charities is that it feeds into what it feels like a particularly British point of view that is rooted in its feudal history. The idea that only royals should be about charity is very much in line with that notion that the aristocracy gives alms to the poor as a means of keeping them loyal and subservient. Harry and Meghan showing that they can still have an impact on the public good without the trappings of royalty breaks down that whole bargain: You all stay in your place and allow us to lord over you and we will continue to sprinkle our noblesse oblige around. The class structure in the UK continues to astound me.
Aptly explained. What are royals for if not for that lie, right?
The “half in/half out” was one option briefly considered during discussions about the Sussexes future WITHIN the institution; it was not a blanket ban on their ability to continue with their charitable endeavours outside military and royal patronages.
The media deliberately misrepresent various statements and twists them into the following lines: the “they wanted privacy”, “called the royal family racist”, “no half in/half out” etc., etc.
Writing Spare was serious therapy for Harry. It was emptying. The documentary was to humanise them as perdonsvandcssca couple. As opposed to the BM and rf portrayal of the as commodities and caricature characters.
Now how the british royals honourable made/make money:
1).. gave licence Chartered to pirates (armed robbers of the sea)
2)..huge investments in the slave trade
3).. killing off Pacific island population and outsourcing their slavery to these islands
4) colonialism of Africa, Australia, new Zealand, Asia
5) banditry and thievery of other nations treasures
6) these days, since they are largely contained in their own lands, they sell titles. Honours of a long dead empire.
If Harry’s curse is that he made his money from “Spare,” William’s curse is that Harry still has 400 pages he could publish later.
400 pages of EVEN WORSE stuff.
Spare me, Sykes. Harry could have gone nuclear but he held back.
I’m here for the EVEN WORSE.
So am I. And Meghan one day writing her memoirs. Since she’s much younger than me, I fear I’ll never read it, but oh boy, I’d love to.
If his family feud was a curse that sold spectacularly well for him, does it not also do the same for the very media and royalists whose only real role is to write about the royal family and every aspect of their family dynamic, including family feuds and drama? Syko’s substack is doing the exact same thing that he criticizes the Netflix and book deal for doing for Harry and Meghan, only this isn’t even his family to freely and rightfully talk about. Harry and Meghan have every right to tell their stories about whatever they experienced in their families or life as a whole. The same royal family that they are trying to get sympathy for are the same people who have also written books and given interviews about their own experiences in this family, yet Harry and Meghan are supposed to remain silent about the years of lies told about them or the racist treatment and threats they’ve received because of those lies. No it doesn’t work that way and if you don’t want people telling others about how poorly you treated them, maybe, just maybe you should have treated them better.
If the William and Charles had left Harry and Meghan alone, there wouldn’t have been a book or a docuseries. There was no deal banning Harry from writing a book or signing with Netflix. Perhaps if the Royal Family wasn’t so arrogant to believe that Harry would not have left or that he would coming back after Charles cut his funding and security, there may not have been a book or a Netflix deal.
This is so amusing. So, earning your money is JUST NOT DONE! You should NEVER donate money earned through commerce. I suspect Harry gets a nice paycheck from Betterup and speaking engagements. THE HORROR!
They really are scraping the bottom of the barrell.
The more I learn about the aristocracy, the less I think of them. Many of them sound simply horrid!!
