The ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ singers made their first appearance in an SNL skit

Saturday Night Live kicked off its 51st season this weekend with Bad Bunny as the host and Doja Cat as the musical guest. It was an okay episode with a charismatic host and a bajillion new cast members. One of the highlights of the show was a sketch in which four friends are at brunch. They’re all catching up on what’s been going on with their lives. Everyone has something outrageously topical to offer, including Bad Bunny’s character, who is obsessed with the movie KPop Demon Hunters. Well, one thing leads to another, and suddenly, we had the the inaugural live performance from the three women who sang for Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, aka Huntrix.

EJAE, Rei Ami and Audrey Nuna, who voice the characters of Rumi, Zoey and Mira in the hit Netflix and Sony Animation movie KPop Demon Hunters, made a surprise appearance during an SNL skit in the season 51 premiere. The short performance as part of a brunch-themed KPop Demon Hunters sketch marks the first-ever live performance of the song by the three women.

The ladies of Huntrix are set to make their first official and full-length performance of the song during Tuesday’s episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. They’ll also be interviewed together. The news was announced last week, showing Fallon receiving a special invitation from some familiar faces for fans of KPop Demon Hunters.

The animated feature has become Netflix’s most popular title ever. The project — which chronicles the adventures of Huntrix, a K-pop girl group comprised of three members who just happen to also fight monsters from the underworld — has been a surprise hit for the streamer, and its soundtrack has spent several weeks in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart. THR has confirmed that a sequel film is in talks at Netflix and Sony Animation.

In August, Huntrix ended Alex Warren’s long-running No. 1 streak to take the top spot on the chart. After a flip-flop the following week, the song returned to No. 1, where it remains. Two other songs from the film are in the top 10 of the Hot 100. “Your Idol” and “Soda Pop,” sung by the film’s fictional boy group Saja Boys, sit at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively. Six other songs from soundtrack, including Twice’s “Strategy,” are also charting on the Hot 100.

I’m not gonna lie; I freaking loved seeing Huntrix show up and sing in perfect harmony. I need to have more of them popping up on my screen. They sounded great and I bopped along the entire time. The sketch itself was fun with some very pointed, topical jokes, but when Bowen Yang entered, I burst out laughing. SNL rarely knows how to end a sketch, but I appreciated that this one ended in the way that it did. Even if it didn’t make sense, it was super fun because we got to sing along. I’m a little bit biased, though, because we actually had friends over on Saturday evening to watch KPop Demon Hunters. They left prior to SNL starting, but at least one person was still up to watch it because when I woke up on Sunday morning, our group text was blowing up with jokes about how everyone was happy to now be in the know. I can’t believe that this is the first time we’ve had the voices behind Huntrix perform live. I wonder if Bad Bunny has seen the movie IRL because he seemed really into it. They sounded so good! I need more live performances.
