George Clooney: ‘We’re going to get through it, but a lot of damage is going to be done’

George Clooney covers the latest issue of Esquire, all to promote his latest movie, Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly. Clooney plays a movie star who wonders if he really showed up for the people in his life. I’ve seen some horrible reviews of the film, but Clooney has enough money and power to ensure that Jay Kelly still has “Oscar buzz.” For me, Clooney is permanently sh-tlisted after what he said and did last year (and this year) about Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. This Esquire interview emphasizes yet again that Clooney’s meddling and ratf–king was always just a political abstraction for him, he’s not actually living under the fascist conditions he helped facilitate. He lives full-time in England, France and Italy now. But of course he still has sh-t to say about American politics in this interview:

Performing Good Night, and Good Luck on Broadway: “I was really nervous, as an actor, which I hadn’t been in a long time… I mean, part of it was strictly age related. As you get older—I’m sixty-four—and as you get older, it doesn’t matter how many granola bars you eat; your brain starts to lock up. I had all these long monologues, and I was afraid of blowing my lines. So every single night for one hundred performances, I would do the whole play in the dressing room before I went onstage. I was so terrified.”

His twins are well-adjusted & they’re being raised in France: “Yeah, we’re very lucky. You know, we live on a farm in France. A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid I hated the whole idea of it. But now, for them, it’s like—they’re not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life. I was worried about raising our kids in L. A., in the culture of Hollywood. I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life. France—they kind of don’t give a sh-t about fame. I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids.”

He came to fatherhood so late: “The only thing I feel lucky about is that I’m so much older that the idea that my son would be compared to me is pretty unlikely, because by the time he actually will have done anything, I’m gonna be gumming my bread.”

America will get through the bad times: “I do believe we get through these things, and if you think back to the times that have been really bad in the country—we’ve had them. I think ’68 was as bad as we could have had. Every city in the United States was on fire and rioting, and the capital was surrounded by armed guards to protect themselves. We killed Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy that year. There was the Tet Offensive…So if you look at it, you go, we’ve been in bad places before. Certainly the Civil War. So we’re going to get through it, but a lot of damage is going to be done along the way because of where we are. And it is heartbreaking to see. And Democrats are gonna have to get their act together— And they will. Coming out of the Iraq war and all that is what brought us Obama—brought us a really good leader. And we’re gonna need it.”

Whether he will ever write another NYT op-ed about a Democrat again: “I don’t think so. I think people have heard enough from me. I wasn’t doing it to, you know—I was doing it because I’d been a personal witness to things, and I also, quite honestly—[Clooney was interrupted].”

He did cocaine in the 1980s. “Eighty-two, I tried—I did blow and stuff. I used to make jokes about how I did too many drugs, but the truth is, it was never a big issue for me at all. And look, there was an episode of Taxi where they’re all doing blow. At the time, it was like, No, this is not like heroin. It’s not addictive. But then it was like, Oh, well, it’s actually pretty f–king bad. Plus, it was all cut with mannitol. The baby laxative. Everybody would do a line and then take a s–t.”

He’s always been a booze guy: “I’ve had periods where, I wouldn’t say it was a problem—I never woke up and drank or anything. But I’d have runs where I’d get pretty toasty every night.”

[From Esquire]

I think Clooney and the podbros say sh-t like “we’ve been through bad times before, we’ll get through them” to avoid taking responsibility for their ratf-cking. Oh, so NOW we should all get along, NOW we should come together? Where were those sentiments when we should have come together to stop this Trump authoritarianism from happening in the first place? Why hasn’t Clooney written a NYT op-ed about Trump’s age and dementia, you know? Where is the 24-7 nitpicking of Trump’s policies from that crew? Anyway, Clooney mostly ran back his greatest hits in this interview and it was just sad. He’s too old to function as a movie star anymore, he needs to step down. We can hold a primary to elect the next Clooney.

Clooney caused a,lot of trouble when he ran to the Times aboit about biden.

  2. Bad times you say? Well I wonder how that happened? Maybe you jumping on the Biden is too old bandwagon had something to do with it? Yes it did. How do you like the old facist dementia ridden orange stain you helped put into office? Yes old actor sit down and STFU!!!!

    • Goldenmom says:

Everyone makes mistakes and says the wrong thing at the wrong time. Fair enough. But this jackass doubled down and now can’t seem to shut up, digging deeper and deeper. And oh by the way, he’s too precious to live in the country he knows all about! As you say, sit down and STFU.

  3. Eurydice says:

Who is this “we” he’s talking about? Easy to “get through it” when he’s living in another country. If/when we actually get through it, he’ll be coming back to do a victory lap – “See, we did it!!”

    • PixieButt says:

Exactly. The “we” he is talking about from the riots of 80 years ago or whatever are dead. We did not get through it; we weren’t alive then. And we, unlike George, are young enough & not wealthy enough to avoid the future.

    • Becks1 says:

And that was always what ticked me off the most about his NYT opinion piece. Okay, another rich white guy thinks his opinion needs to be shared internationally. Nothing new there. But he could speak out against biden because he was insulated from the fallout of a second trump administration. Even in the US he’d have been insulated bc he’s rich, and rich people aren’t affected by rising healthcare premiums and higher grocery store prices the way the rest of us are. But in France, italy and England – he’s even more so and he has even more options if he wants to leave those countries.

Many, many of us are stuck here. And we would have preferred an aging and somewhat senile Joe Biden over this disaster.

    • E says:

Yeah, it’s super easy to write an op-ed about a decent man and public servant then f-ck off to whichever European country your family is living in ATM.

Meanwhile, the rest of us are here dealing with the consequences. I would prefer not to give Hollywood Actor Clooney too much credit in influencing people’s votes in 2024, but he certainly didn’t help anything.

  4. Giddyi says:

I saw this headline and his picture and all I could think was…asshole!

    • North of Boston says:

I saw the headline and the thumbnail pic and thought:
      Asshole
      Nope
Hang on … why is he wearing a tan wifebeater for a magazine cover? … ick!

(He was not … but his general rich person mediterranean tan made the camel hair coat sleeve come across like his own skin)

  5. Maxine Branch says:

    Clooney is dead to me.

  6. Ciotog says:

The only thing that’s even comparable to right now is the Civil War, and I don’t think it compares. We are on the brink of authoritarianism. Even during the Civil War there were elections.
Likewise, groups of Americans have been targeted in the past, now we are all targeted.

    • Brassy Rebel says:

1968 was no walk in the park but we didn’t wake up every morning wondering what the Nazis ruling over us were going to do to us that day. We still had agency over our own lives. Now we have less every damn day. “I think people have heard enough from me.” Co-sign.

      • bisynaptic says:

Just to clarify: during the Civil War, enslaved people didn’t have agency over their own lives.

  7. Jill says:

He can sit the f**k down.

  8. seaflower says:

Rich white man living in Europe declares we will all be fine as children go without food, pensioners without medical care and Rump destroys America

  9. Jais says:

He’ll get through it. But will “we” get through it? Really bad things are happening to a lot of people. Ice, health care premiums, the vilifying of the trans community. So, idk George, will we all get through it, or is it more that just some of us will get through it? Hanging on to hope isn’t a bad thing but coming from him it feels disingenuous.

  10. ThatGirlThere says:

He’s so pretentious and clearly loves the taste of his own shit. “I’d been a personal witness to things…” Bitch what?!? PJB is
82 years old, of course he’s going look and act tired. That’s why he has a staff and a VICE PRESIDENT.

If Kamala was Ken Harris he wouldn’t have said shit because he would trust the backup ready to come in and lead. Fuck off.

  11. Lightpurple says:

We can get through it because we got through the Civil War?

700,000 people didn’t get through the Civil War

And 2026 is shaping up to be far worse than 1968. There were elections in 1968; there probably won’t be elections in 2026. At least not in places like DC, Portland, Chicago, Boston, NYC

    • North of Boston says:

And also the country never did get through or over the Civil War … if we did we wouldn’t still be dealing with white nationalist fetishizing the confederate battle flag and insurrectionists carrying INTO THE US Capitol.

Or having people shot, arrested, dragged from their cars, beaten … by armed thugs and LEO’s for existing while black and brown
Or having assholes like Clooney blatantly undermining, trying to run roughshod over, trying to keep from the Oval Office a sitting vice president who just happens to be black because of “reasons”.

    • Traveller says:

“700,000 people didn’t get through the Civil War”.
And I want to add over 400,000 Americans died fighting fascism during WW2.

This is what pisses me off when people say cavalierly “we will get through this”. How many people died fighting to “get through this”? What he really should be saying is that he and his family will clearly get through this unscathed …. the rest of us … oh well.

  12. Tina says:

As a Canadian watching the US right now I actually don’t think you are going to get through it. I honestly think it’s just going to get worse and worse. I don’t see any way out when the bad guys have all of the control and the power and have no intention of giving any of it up ever. Sorry but we are past the point of the voting booth saving you.

    • Brassy Rebel says:

We will get through it but not without horrible pain and suffering. We will finally win the Civil War we thought we already had won.

    • Betsy says:

This seems a little cruel and unhelpful. We WILL get through it, the question is how much pain, death and suffering will be necessary before we are through it though. Telling a nation – who I believe very much did NOT vote for this (and Dr. Walter Mebane agrees with me) – that they’re effed is unsurprisingly unhelpful.

  13. ariel says:

Thanks for playing a small part in the catastrophes that got us here george.
    The North remembers.

  14. MsIam says:

That dark hair color makes him look even more old and dried up. Clooney is finished and he knows it, he knows he fucked up and a good part of his fan base is pissed at him. Way to go George, nothing left for you to do but count your money and do the school run.

  15. SIde Eye says:

I am Canadian but have both citizenships. I ran to Canada when DT got elected. I absolutely believed he would turn the US military against US citizens, lock up dissidents, censor journalists, and disappear people. And even scarier idiots were dancing around with maxi pads on their ears and “dictator on day one” shirts like this is some sort of joke.

I am so tired of people like Clooney gaslighting the American public. No George, I don’t think it’s going to be okay. Ask the families of the people disappeared from “Alligator Alcatraz” if they are getting through this. They are zip tying children and disappearing them! I think those kids are being trafficked. They are invading every major American city to desensitize everyone to hostile military presence in their neighbourhoods. This is going to get so much worse.

I have been thinking about the Holocaust a lot lately and the people who fled. They literally ignored people like Clooney who were telling them no biggie, it’s a rough patch, statistically you’re fine. The people who listened to that BS and stayed, because they had jobs, or family, or they believed things would turn out fine for them were murdered.

Do not listen to this overprivileged celebrity who had a hand in creating this fresh hell but is living abroad on the topic of whether or not you will personally be fine.

Clooney needs to stop talking. He is unhelpful and misinformed. And as someone upthread pointed out we lost 700,000 lives in the Civil War. Not exactly a little bump in the road.

    • ilovethedark says:

People need to look up Mao’s and Pol Pot’s culture revolutions. I fear we’re going into that direction rather than a 1939 Germany (which still can happen). Lots of stupid little men who want to burn everything down in order to start from “zero” to build their empires.

  16. MsIam says:

I think things are really getting scary now. Over the weekend, that South Carolina judge who ruled against Trump had her house mysteriously burn down and her husband and son were seriously injured. The Trump administration is trying to get the voting records from every state and that judge ruled against him. Intimidating the judiciary and judicial and legal system is a big part of totalitarian takeover. Its why he’s going after Comey and Letitia James. You can’t blame everything on George Clooney but for him to act like “We’ll get through this!” is tone deaf.

  17. AA says:

All these celebrities who have the money to go live somewhere else pontificating on how awful the US is need to be quiet. I agree it’s awful but guess what, I and 99.99% of the country have nowhere else to go, and we don’t need you lecturing us from France or the UK (Robin Wright and Ellen) or wherever else you’ve holed up to ride it out. We don’t want your opinion. The rich better stop talking. People are getting more and more angry. I looked into whether I’d be eligible for citizenship anywhere else and my family has been here so long, no. My last “foreign” ancestor were some Germans in the 1860s.

    • SIde Eye says:

If you’re in healthcare, a scientist or a teacher there is a shortage in Canada and they would love you. Some countries (like Portugal) make it a bit easier than others. There are some really helpful Reddit threads where US citizens can get information on what countries have friendlier immigration policies. I know moving is expensive because I just did it and it wasn’t easy.

I have some friends who financially can’t move out of the country right now. They all have current valid US passports though, and have arranged to go somewhere (staying with friends etc) when things really start popping off (in my opinion we’re already there). They are also making arrangements for pets. For the pet situation, the easiest is Canada, because Canada will take your pet if they have a valid rabies vaccine certificate. I drove across the border with my dog.

It was expensive and it rocked my bank account (I even sold my condo at a loss) but I am so so glad I did it and I’m never moving back even if by some miracle, Democrats are in power again. I have 3 different sets of friends (all members of marginalized communities) who have an open invite to stay with me if they feel unsafe or need to run.

People abroad need to start providing safe places to US citizens to run to. I am prepared to have up to 6 people in my place temporarily if I need to. I know a lot of people doing the same. Just make sure you have a passport and it’s not expiring soon, and have all your documents (birth certificate passport etc) ready in the event you need to leave quickly. Before I left I had a bag packed at the door and another bag with my dog’s things.

I hope you never have to use the emergency bag and documents, but it’s best to be prepared to.

      • Mandy says:

He is forever sh*listed after what he did to his “friend” Joe Biden. I used to adore him, now I will never watch anything he is associated with or starring in. Have fun eating crepes George while we are force fed fascism!

      • TurbanMa says:

Thank you for sharing this info. I know there were a lot of people who left the US over the last 5 years and I’m wondering if certain areas are saturated or not as welcoming because so many people have come? I would like to relocate but my high school senior is pursuing college and commercial aviation career and I’m not sure of our ability to support that goal financially while settling into a new country. If you have any thoughts or words of advice on that pls share them.

      • SIde Eye says:

Mandy I am right there with you!

TurbanMa I strongly recommend looking at Canadian Universities for college. We are touring a few now (my child is a junior and was born in the US but has both citizenships) and the cost is dramatically lower even if you come in as a foreign student. Plus with the exchange rate (as long as the US economy doesn’t collapse immediately) you will do okay.

I live in Quebec, but Ontario is probably a lot easier for Americans – it’s almost all English. The cost of living have gone up tremendously but again, with the exchange rate, you will probably be okay. I don’t recommend downtown Toronto (crazy expensive) but there are neighborhoods outside of Toronto the are still affordable. You just need first and last month’s rent and security deposit and you don’t have to be a resident or a citizen to rent in Canada. Just identification (US ID is ok and proof of income)

The most affordable city IMO is Edmonton. You can get brand new construction for 400k Canadian dollars, rents are somewhat reasonable. The only downside is winters are a brutal, but personally I love Edmonton it’s diverse and welcoming (when I lived in Georgia we used to say once you leave Atlanta welcome to Georgia well it’s sort of similar in Edmonton, once you leave Edmonton, welcome to Alberta – you will still find most Albertans are quite friendly)

I suggest narrowing it down to a city and school/university that you have interest and getting on a Reddit thread about it. People are soooo helpful on Reddit and a lot of US immigrants living in Canada are on there. I learned for example, it’s best to sell my car in the States rather than pay all the import taxes and fees etc. importing the car. That kind of info is very useful. I would start there. Also Canadian schools have a higher acceptance rate than US ones, the idea being everyone should have access to even elite schools. I recommend following Tod Maffin on Instagram he calls himself an emotional support Canadian and has a ton of useful info for USA citizens and it’s all free on his site.

  18. Northernlala says:

He says from France! How far up their own ass can a person be? Doesn’t have to raise his kids in the US. Doesn’t have to worry that his immigrant wife would get deported. Just stay in France and stop pretending you understand what every day people are going through. Ugh 😠🙄

  19. Louisa says:

Honestly can’t even read the article as I’ll get too angry but came right to the comments to make sure we’re all still agreement that he needs to take all the seats and STFU. Glad to see we are.

  20. Mslove says:

OMG. George breezes in, screws us over, and expects us to pick up the pieces he broke. He then dares to complain about the paparazzi following his kids, and oh no, they might be compared to other kids! I live in a state where our department of education was ravaged and our students are hungry. It’s going to take years to fix. I say we let Europe keep him permanently.

  21. Sean says:

He looks old and foreign. France can have him.

  22. Sean says:

The comment robot won’t let me say that Father Time hasn’t been kind.

  23. Henny Penny says:

What do you mean by “we’re” George? Aren’t you over in England hobnobbing with royalty, hanging off the arm of someone with real accomplishments, and pretending that you aren’t turning into an old troll, all while at a safe distance far away from the damage. Sorry if I’m not consoled by your reassurance that we’re going to be ok while you suffer zero consequences for the damaging role you’ve played.

  24. Flamingo says:

HE will survive it because he’s rich, his wife is rich. Their kids will be rich. It’s easy to throw empty words from a gold castle.

I just survived a layoff and will be lucky if I survive two more years with my current job. I don’t have a nest egg, trust fund, rich family to fall back on. I swim or I drown.

Let’s not forget his whole, Biden needs to step down was because Joe didn’t recognize him at some party. He was POTUS. His main concern is not some washed up actor from Different Strokes. That George happily looked the the other way when he worked with predators like Harvey Weinstein. Producing his movie he starred and directed Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. That he has no problem with.

    GAWD I LOATHE HIM.

  25. Miss Melissa says:

“We’re going to get through it?”

He’s not getting through anything, because he lives in another country.

    There is no “we.”

  26. Dudette says:

I never liked this guy even at theach height of his popularity. He’s always been a jackass imo.

  27. bisynaptic says:

Boy, does he ever have survivorship bias. A lot of people didn’t—and won’t—make it.
