Maitlis: Prince William ‘is most concerned’ about Andrew M-W’s ‘mental health’

The problem with all of the left-behind Windsors rushing to claim credit for Andrew Mountbatten Windsor’s “fall from grace” is that few people believe that any of the royals were doing much of anything. That’s how it looked as it was unfolding: the Prince and Princess of Wales have been on vacation since October 17 (longer in Kate’s case); Princess Anne was publicly quiet; no one cares what Sophie and Edward are doing or saying at any given moment. It was just between dithering King Charles, Andrew and the courtiers. Now, I believe William was probably raging over the phone, just I believe Kensington Palace’s clowns have always been eager to demand credit for everything, all the time. So, in any case, Emily Maitlis got a suspicious briefing about who gets credit for what, and her sources insist that William was NOT raging at anyone. Apparently, William was simply worried about Andrew’s mental health, you guys.

“It is Prince William, actually, who is most concerned about the state of his uncle’s mental health, something he takes very seriously, his work, Kate’s work, is very close to the issues of mental health.” Maitlis also claims that there was discomfort/nervousness from Anne and Edward about whether Charles is going “too hard” on Andrew.

I’ve already seen Tom Sykes shrug this off as Maitlis getting briefed directly from Buckingham Palace, but I don’t think that’s what this is at all. I think this does come from a William/KP briefing, like they’re trying to position William as compassionate or caring about his poor nonce uncle. I believe that because somewhere along the line, someone in that office knows that painting William as ruthless, enraged, permanently angry and constantly on the edge of a nervous breakdown is not actually the way to go when your guy is one flu virus away from being king. Now, does it mean that William actually gives a sh-t about Andrew’s mental health? No. Because the rest of the coverage, pretty much everywhere else, is William claiming credit for everything his father did. William wants it both ways – he wants to be seen as a compassionate Scooter King who has credibility on mental health issues… and he also wants to be a ruthless bully who screams, cries and throws up every two seconds whenever someone does something he doesn’t like.

    Scoot wants the lodge imo.

    • Penny says:

Agree. There was talk about the Yorks being booted from Royal Lodge years ago. Rumors that Charles wants Royal Lodge for Camilla and William wants it for George are old.

  2. MSJ says:

Has Emily Maitlis become a Royal reporter now? Have the royals acquired another stenographer/mouthpiece?

Is she more valued than the ones on the WhatsApp chat? She seems to have a one on one direct line with the palace.

Interesting turn of events on the Royal beat. 🤔

    • Jais says:

I think in terms of the Andrew situation, especially after her newsnight interview with him, she gets a lot of attention and possibly palace sources talking to her about it. That interview was a big deal. Idk if she discusses the royals the rest of the time. Maybe some? Unless a journalist is pressing why the government doesn’t demand more transparency in royal finances and leases than I’m like meh about them. She feels very establishment.

      • Magdalena says:

This is why Kensington Palace (Jason Knauf?) is feeding HER lines. After the Andrew interview, the country sees her as a serious, legitimate journalist, so it’s easy to co-opt her face and voice to spout their propaganda, because her spoonfed statements will be taken seriously.

See how many previously respected “historians” jumped on the royal stenography bandwagon and lost their reputations as a result.

    • Hyacinth Bouquet says:

Maitlis is a good journalist and a brilliant interviewer. The Royals won’t pull wool over her eyes any time soon.

      • Magdalena says:

I disagree. She has spent a week and a half literally parroting Kensington Palace’s lies about how *hard* William and Kate work on mental health issues, among other William-embiggening statements. She’s supposedly an investigative journalist, yet not a peep that this is what THEY say, but there is evidence of this. She seems to be revelling in her new levels of “access”.

After the palaces lied to her re Andrew and he lied to her in person, you would think that she would be more discerning.

      • Magdalena says:

Sorry, I meant to type but there is NO evidence of what they are claiming. She’s simply acting as a stenographer. What a letdown.

    • Becks1 says:

Well, she’s a journalist with a significant connection to this story bc of the Andrew interview, so it makes sense that she’s getting briefings and covering this.

    • Laura says:

She’s a good journalist and brilliant interviewer – NOT a royal mouthpiece. It’s probably the hang over connections from that seminal interview she did with him that kicked this all off.

    • jais says:

She is a good journalist and brilliant interviewer but she is part of the BM and has a reverence for the monarchy. Which can be a blind spot in some ways. She went hard on the spare Andrew in that newsnight interview which was brilliant and all the kudos to her for that which are much much deserved. I’d like to see her apply that brilliance to the whole of the monarchy, kings and heirs alike and all the financial opaqueness that exists.

      • Lorelei says:

@Jais, ITA, and it’s unfortunate because she really is an excellent interviewer and a “real” journalist (compared to most of the ‘royal experts’ we usually hear from).

I definitely thought she would be covering all of this with a much more critical eye, and I certainly didn’t expect to see her out there polishing Will’s (of all people!) image.

  3. Maxine Branch says:

I guess folks just have to say something re William to include him in the conversation re his uncle. William and mental health does not belong in the same sentence. The world has witnessed how William has been threatening and vilifying his better brother the whole of their lives. Therefore, this statement is done to try to humanize a man who does not have an ounce of humanity or empathy only entitlement.

  4. Eurydice says:

So, which story is it? Was he sharing a joke with Andrew, was he disgusted/furious to be sitting next to him, or was he concerned with Andrew’s mental health? With all these mood swings, I’ve got to wonder about William’s mental health.

    • Smart&Messy says:

Right? Which is it?? And Emily should be ashamed for kanonizing their amazing work for mental health issues without checking what they have actually done about it. Photo ops don’t bring progress just PR for those lazy posers.

      • CatGotMyTongue says:

Well… it’s also possible that she’s trying to thread the needle. If she comes off as anti monarchy, the pro monarchy people will tune her out.

She absolutely eviscerated Just Andrew! Sure, he helped. But she took him to the mat (and then out behind the shed).

Maybe she’s making a subtle point. If mental health is one of their “causes” then great. You can’t criticize that. It’s a good thing. What they are actually doing about it is another question. She could drag them for it, but she would probably prefer it (and may be anticipating that it will happen) if they hang themselves.

        I think she’s a good journo. I don’t think she’s a royalist. I think she’s swimming in the waters where she is.

      • HuffnPuff says:

Agree on all points. Was Scooter King part of the decision making process or deeply saddened by it? It can’t be both. We just read he was very angry about Andrew and now he’s worried for his mental health? And agree about photo ops and videos being held up as some groundbreaking work on issues. These people are so full of themselves.

  5. Henny Penny says:

But William is going to be doing the Nation a great service when he takes over and renovates Royal Lodge.

    • Lorelei says:

Frankly I can’t imagine wanting to live in the home that Andrew did for so many years, and where he hosted freaking Epstein…god only knows what vile activities went on there! No amount of renovating would get rid of that stench.

Not to mention that IMO, RL is one of the ugliest of the royal properties. From certain angles, it looks to me like a hospital or an administration building or something. But it’s big, and I guess that everything is a d!ck-measuring contest with these people.

  6. Hypocrisy says:

Going from an incandescent rage monster set on vengeance to pedo sympathizer is quite the pr move.. because no one in the general public that I know is concerned about the predators mental health especially when he is getting a golden retirement package fully funded by the King.

    • Jais says:

That’s the thing about rushing around to claim credit for everything. It’s smarter to take a beat and see how it’s going to go down before rushing to claim anything. That doesn’t seem to be a strong-point for William and his team. So they end up looking like foolish flip floppers.

      • Lorelei says:

@Jais, EXACTLY. William is so impatient and impulsive. These qualities are not going to serve him well.

    • sunnyside up says:

And especially when he should be standing his trial.

  7. Amy Bee says:

He didn’t seem to have any care for his brother’s and sister in law’s mental health. But we are supposed to believe that he cares for Andrew mental well-being. Wasn’t KP briefing to the press that he was behind the decision to “punish” Andrew?

  8. The pedos mental health? How truly out of character for Peg to worry about a family member’s mental health. It’s good for pedos but not his own brother who they complained that he was getting too much therapy ? Come on make it make sense!!

    • Jais says:

And where was his compassion for Meghan’s MH? Iirc, he authorized Knauf to doctor Meghan’s emails during her court case.

  9. ThatGirlThere says:

He wants to be seen as compassionate and concerned with mental health because that’s who Harry IS. Harry has consistently championed mental health issues since before he met Meghan with Heads Together. I wonder how the partnership with other charities in England are doing? Does Willy even check in with that initiative anymore?

Will is such a fraud and I absolutely believe he’s enraged and angry.

  10. sunnyside up says:

Instead of worrying about his brother’s mental health he should be worrying about the mental health of Andrew’s victims. If we are to believe the authorities Guthrie was driven to suicide, unless of course she was murdered to keep her quiet about all the others, including Trump

    • MY3CENTS says:

Exactly. Somehow these clowns always find a,way to blunder everything up and look out of touch.
This is actually the one instance the public wouldn’t care less about a pedo offenders mental health.

    • Lorelei says:

I honestly think William is too stupid to consider this viewpoint, and how a statement like this will read to the public. All he cares about is positioning himself in the press as…whatever he decides that day. Either a vengeful rage monster (which is where he usually lands) or a caring nephew, apparently.

  11. Lady Digby says:

W and K have self-absorbed and only care about themselves. The land grab around FL shows how they unbothered they are about neighbours rights. Both have bullied Harry and Meghan for years so nasty to close relatives. I don’t see any concern about anybody else’s mental health and especially not Andrew’s. Narratives around this couple are always suspect and designed to enmbiggen FK and FQ who are invariably on a luxury holiday and totally hands off.

  12. anna says:

doesn’t the media/the royal rota feel ridiculous? even emily – she is just reporting this directly from buckingham palace instead of couching it to say “this is what I was told and here is why we should be skeptical of it,” or “I’ve done my own investigation to confirm this information.” She could at least say it conflicts with other reports etc.

and like everyone said before – crazy arrogant of him to say this when he never cared about meghan and harry’s mental health. but cares more about his uncle who (at the very least) is in trouble for befriending and taking money from a criminal.

makes me think of the bit in the meghan/harry doc where harry gets a long text from william right after the oprah interview came out. I assume it was william ranting and screaming, not expressing any concern about anyone’s mental health.

  13. Libra says:

William , (or his minions,)has finally read the room and sees that ” incandescent rage and revenge ” is not a good look for a future king. Using Harry now as a model of compassion?

  14. Vic says:

Andrew never thought about the physical or mental welfare of the girls he “allegedly” met. Nor has he ever expressed any sympathy towards the victims. F*** his MH.

  15. Lady Digby says:

@Anna I bet the text was full of swear words and really nasty. Wasn’t Tom Sykes reporting that Will physically throws people out of his presence if Harry is mentioned? Will is regularly portrayed as raging, shouting, shoving and demanding. He hardly sounds like a sensitive and compassionate man concerned about the impact of his behaviour upon relatives, friends or staff? Grabber Will doesn’t give a stuff about the feelings or rights of anybody else.

  16. Elly says:

It sounds like the Firm is trying to redirects the public away from feeling anger and disgust at the Andrew situation to feeling sorry and concerned for Andrew’s mental health. Personally, I don’t think Andrew deserves any sympathy.

    • Lorelei says:

@Elly, I don’t think that ANYONE thinks that Andrew deserves any sympathy (except Fergie). This is all about William’s image, and it’s falling flat.

  17. QuiteContrary says:

This is actually an instance in which William’s anger at his nonce uncle (nuncle?) would be justified.

But of course William cannot read the room. He always gets it wrong.

  18. Cosmo says:

I don’t think a rapist facing (minimal) consequences falls under the mental health campaign umbrella. Not that one exists anyway.

  19. Beverley says:

This is laughable! The rage-filled, incandescent, fuming future king is concerned about Andrew’s mental wellbeing?
    Ha, physician heal thyself.

  20. bluhare says:

    Pull the other one, William.

  21. Khate's Mourning Wig says:

I care about Andrew’s mental wellbeing too – I hope he suffers. A lot!

  22. KC says:

That Chimpanzee smile is SO fake and SO disturbing.

  23. Me on travel says:

What’s confusing to me is that Sykes is William’s devoted mouthpiece and puffer-upper, almost like Sykes has an intravenous drip from KP. But Sykes and Maitlis aren’t on the same page here, with Sykes trying (and failing laughably) to paint William as decisive and ruthless, while Maitlis claims William held negotiations up out of concern for Andrew’s mental health. These two stories can’t both be coming from KP, can they?

  24. Mika says:

God. He is really unattractive. Being immature and petty really steals your looks.
