Was Michelle Yeoh’s bubble dress the best look from the NYC ‘Wicked’ premiere?

Here are some photos from last night’s New York premiere of Wicked: For Good. I’m not tired of this promotional cycle yet, what about you? They learned from last year’s promotion, I guess. Over-staturating the media for months worked for the first film, and I guess they feel like people don’t need months and months of promotional drama this time around.

Fashion notes: Cynthia Erivo wore an all-black Balenciaga which… eh. The skirt is lovely but the leather top is blah. Is the leather fringe supposed to evoke Cynthia’s fingernails? It’s interesting that Cynthia and Jonathan Bailey were the ones in all-black as well – some foreshadowing about their characters’ connection, perhaps. Ariana Grande wore Schiaparelli. The gown is fine and appropriately princessy, but I’m “over” this silhouette and styling on Ari. Mix it up!

The most notable fashion from the New York premiere was, in my opinion, from Michelle Yeoh. Yeoh went with this absolutely bonkers Sarah Burton “yellow-brick bubble gown” which makes her look like she’s wearing an oversized ballerina’s tutu. It’s super-fun and I kind of love that Michelle went so bold and so silly. I don’t love Michelle’s pixie cut, but I feel certain that it’s a wig, right?

Years ago (early 1990’s) I had a bridesmaid dress similar to Ariana Grande’s dress here. Top was more of a velvet material & more conservative and had a bolero jacket but man I loved that dress with all the layers of white tulle. It was like floating in a cloud when I wore it. It also looked similar to a dress Grace Kelly wore in Rear Window. I doubt I can fit into that dress anymore but I still have it.. nice memories first thing in the AM…

I get the same reaction as when Rihanna wore a pink tulle dress. Unexpected but it fits their personally so it works.

Michelle’s dress is a lot of fun. Ariana’s and Cynthia’s are fine but neither stands out to me, maybe because we’ve seen so many already. I actually am getting tired of the promo, but maybe that’s because I’m not the movies’ target audience. We streamed the first one and liked it but didn’t love it.

This lemon-yellow tulle piece is somehow refreshing.

  5. Sorry Michelle’s dress looks like a very tall girls tutu that she decided to wear as a dress.

I love clothes, I love ALL of this. I’d wear Michelle Yeoh’s dress in a heartbeat.

I was tired of the promotion before it even started.
And I think of it as a performance more than a promotional tour which is maybe why I am annoyed by it. The whole “I suffered for my art by playing this character” is a worn out trope to get awards and very unhealthy, in my opinion.
I do think Ariana is suffering but that’s a whole ‘nother topic.

    Adorable!

  9. I completely agree with the uniqueness of Michelle Yeoh’s bubble gown – it’s a bold fashion choice that really stands out. The comparison to an oversized ballerina’s tutu is spot-on! It’s refreshing to see celebrities take risks with their red carpet looks.
