Gwyneth Paltrow gave Timothee Chalamet skincare tips, but his acne was makeup

We are paddling closer and closer to the Christmas release of Marty Supreme, Timothée Chalamet’s ping pong passion project that he spent years preparing for and is currently promoting… with a deployment of jackets and hoodies. That’s not a dig, the kid’s got a magic touch in his handling of celebrity. But as far as I can tell, we have yet to see his co-star Gwyneth Paltrow don one. If anyone could get Goop to stoop to streetwear, I have faith it’d be Timothée! Not only does she co-star, but Gwyneth is Timmy’s love interest. The movie is set in the 1950s and Gwynnie plays a movie star and honestly, I totally get the casting. Gwyneth has a face and carriage for period pieces. So she’s also been on the promotion circuit, and in a new podcast interview with Vogue she talked about trying to give Timmy skincare tips… before he corrected her that the acne she was referring to was his film makeup for the character. A Goop oops.

Gwyneth Paltrow had an awkward on-set moment with Timothée Chalamet after mistaking his “Marty Supreme” makeup for real skin concerns.

The Goop founder, 53, revealed on Tuesday’s episode of “The Run-Through with Vogue” podcast that she didn’t realize the pockmarks on Chalamet’s face were faux while filming the upcoming ping-pong drama.

“In ‘Marty Supreme,’ Timothée has pockmarks, and they made his eyes beady with contacts and glasses,” Paltrow explained. “And it’s all makeup.”

When Chalamet, 29, commented on his appearance during filming, Paltrow jumped at the opportunity to share her wellness wisdom. “I was like, ‘Oh, you know, you can do microneedling for that,’” she recalled, laughing.

The “Dune” actor quickly set her straight. “And he’s like, ‘This is makeup!’ I was like, ‘Oh, s–t.’ I didn’t realize,” the actress admitted. “The makeup was so good that I thought he had little acne scars.”

Paltrow praised the film’s makeup team for their realistic work transforming Chalamet for the role. She also clarified that her co-star has “beautiful skin” in real life, adding, “His skin in real life, you’re like, ‘Oh my gosh.’”

She reflected that she’s “never done anything like that where I’m really transforming in the face,” though viewers of her cringeworthy 2001 rom-com “Shallow Hal” — in which she wore a fat suit and prosthetics to play an obese woman — may beg to differ.

In “Marty Supreme,” Chalamet plays Marty Mauser, a character loosely based on 1950s table tennis champion Marty Reisman.

The A24 film, directed by Josh Safdie, follows the young ping-pong prodigy’s chaotic journey from shoe salesman to global champion in 1950s New York City.

Paltrow stars opposite Chalamet as Kay Stone, a married movie star and love interest. The Oscar winner previously teased Vanity Fair in March that she and Chalamet have “a lot” of sex scenes together in the film, calling the experience “beyond” vulnerable.

This story is so fantastically Goop. Do you think it even registers for her how completely it tracks with her record? It’s a question of self awareness and, well, yeah we’ll leave it as a question. But at least we the viewing public can appreciate this latest entry into the Paltrow canon of forgetting something she absolutely knows in a way that comes off as aloof and judgmental. And this especially seems to be her playbook in promoting Marty Supreme; remember she just told British Vogue she had no idea Timothée was dating Kylie Jenner, lol. Though I’ll say that one is somewhat more plausible. But not (max)factoring in film makeup?? She’s been in the industry for three decades! Not to mention, one would presume she read the script, which would include character descriptions! What — did she only read the parts about her own character? So no, I’m not buying that a veteran actor like Goop thought cameras were rolling on pockmarks that weren’t meant to be there. But this is why we love her! Or at least are bemused by her! Can’t wait to hear what lie yarn she spools next, because there will be more; Gwyneth has been hitting the campaign trail which shows she does want to be a part of the awards conversation, whatever nonchalant dismissal she affects.

  1. Thinking says:

Was she being aloof or just rude?

I guess she’s smart enough to pick targets who have generally good self esteem. I don’t need to worry about Chalamet, but it’s still rude…

Imagine going up to Apple and mentioning what she could do about her skin…

  2. Crystal says:

This would be rude in normal context but I’m having trouble seeing it that way when it’s two movie stars on set, because costars absolutely do share these kinds of things and it affects their income in their line of work.

And I don’t think any of us need to worry about Timmy’s self-esteem, lol. He is a nepo baby like her and is fine.

    • Thinking says:

Maybe she’s making the story up. He looks like he’d have naturally pretty skin and she’d be able to spot what’s real and what’s not, but came up with a story that makes her sound strange instead of all-knowing about skin care products (which might have been her intention in telling it).

Chalamet has nice hair. He probably already knows what to do with his skin.

I’m with you on this. Actors seem to get picked apart more than models. I think GP was just showing support.

  3. Normades says:

Anyone done micro needling at home? It’s so expensive to get done professionally and I’ve heard you can get results otherwise but it freaks me out.

    • Sona says:

I don’t think you should be doing anything to your skin at home that involves needling. It’s done by certified professionals for a reason, I wouldn’t risk it with a DIY.

  4. Jegede says:

I absolutely love these crazy Gwyneth stories. 😄😄😄😄

    Only Goop!

  5. here2 says:

    1) Who wants advice on their skin from Gwyneth? Her skin is terrible.

    And

    2) What is going on with her husband’s PANTS in the pic above? Upper thigh region looks…sus. Did Gwyneth not care to tell him he needed to adjust things, or does she think that reflects well on her or what??
