Prince Harry met with the families who lost children & are suing Meta & YouTube

Prince Harry has spent years campaigning against social media companies and children’s access to smartphones. This subject was why he spoke at the Clinton Global Initiative in 2024, and why Harry and Meghan created The Lost Screen Memorial as well as the Parents Network. Well, this week, Harry met with parents who have lost children due to smartphones, social media and YouTube. The parents are part of an important case before the California courts.

The Duke of Sussex has thanked bereaved families mounting a legal challenge against two of the world’s biggest tech companies for “telling your stories over and over again”.

Prince Harry made the remarks in an at-times emotional address to parents gathered after the start of a landmark trial in California that will examine whether Instagram and YouTube damage young people’s mental health. The families are alleging that the online platforms are addictive by design. Lawyers for YouTube and Meta, which owns Instagram, reject the allegations.

Prince Harry expressed hope for “truth, justice and accountability” in footage shared exclusively with BBC Breakfast.

His remarks come after the prince launched a campaign for stronger protections for children from the dangers of social media last year.

“We’ve said time and time again that this is a David versus Goliath situation,” the prince told the bereaved families, who had gathered on Wednesday evening following the day’s court proceedings.

“I’ve been in some similar situations myself – vastly different – but when you’re sitting in court and if you have that feeling of just overwhelming emotion, because you can’t believe that the people on the other side are saying what they’re saying – that by the very nature of defending what they’re defending, the lies that they are stating, is devaluing life, is devaluing your children’s lives – if that brings stuff up for you, it is totally normal,” he said.

“None of you should be here,” Harry said with an audible warble to his voice. “Thank you for doing everything that you’ve done. Thank you for telling your stories over and over again. Truth, justice and accountability: those are the three things that will come from this.”

I’m including the short clip below, and you can hear the emotion in Harry’s voice. He and Meghan have spent a lot of time with these families and other families who have lost children. It’s one of Harry’s biggest causes these days, and it’s interesting that he’s closely following this case and meeting with the parents involved with the case. It really is heartbreaking and I genuinely believe that the more Harry (an incredibly high-profile celebrity) highlights these issues, the more likely it is that Meta and YouTube are forced to change their policies.

He’s supporting British families against California based companies in the name of mental health? It’s like this cause was tailor made for Harry. Or vice versa. Anyway, this is what service looks like.

I believe this cause truly hits home for him in multiple ways. Harry has watched what Meghan has endured at the hands of social media for a decade now. Even though social media as we know it was not yet available, the media truly abused him as he was growing up. That obviously has had a profound impact on him. Once Archie was born, I believe he realized he couldn’t keep his children safe within the institution. His mother would truly be proud of his courage in calling out injustice. He shows his empathy and his strength in so many ways.

Truly, I admire Harry so much. He wears his heart on his sleeve, you can see that none of this is performative for him.

My heart goes out to these parents. Truly devastating. Good to see Harry highlighting them and not letting up on this issue.

Well done Harry! Thank you for walking the walk.

He really is the best of the royals … by miles and miles. It’s not even close.

Prince Harry is an amazing man who has always shown how compassionate he is through his actions. He brings a rawness to what these parents must be experiencing through their losses and through these proceedings. Imagine the pain of being in an uncomfortable place, fighting for something that should be basic rights and expectations of any parent and the people you are fighting against lack this human and real compassion to do the simplest of things that would have prevented your loss and could prevent future losses of millions around the world. The evil in this world has become even more evident this past decade and it’s through social media that we see it flourish because the ones making decisions about these platforms simply don’t care to create safe spaces for our children or ourselves to communicate and express ourselves. Harry’s words made it so raw and that is why I continue to appreciate all that he, Meghan, these parents and so many others are trying to do for our children and others.

Such a juxtaposition as to what his brother is doing. Harry is doing much more meaningful work while his brother is paling around with Epstein’s associates. The British people really need to take off the blinders. The drip drip of the Epstein files about them really show how perverted and lacking in any morals they are. They don’t care about anybody and only care about protecting themselves. They are truly a disgusting family. William and Kate please stop talking about mental health. Camilla how can you talk to women about abuse. Both of them are hypocrites.

It’s absolutely astonishing. Harry is embracing the issues of the modern world while the left behinds drink tea with pinkies in the air.
