Travis Kelce, free agent, will likely sign up for one more year with the Chiefs

While Travs Kelce’s 2025-26 season didn’t end the way he wanted, I thought that once the season was over, Travis would decide that he does want to retire after all. I mean, he keeps getting offered all kinds of side-gigs, and he doesn’t have to remain an active football player to bank lucrative sponsorships. Travis only has to ask his retired brother about that – Jason Kelce is making major money these days and I feel like Jason and Kylie are starring in every other commercial. Travis turns 37 in October – realistically, how much longer will his body hold up? These are the thoughts I imagined running through Travis’s mind. But apparently not! Travis has decided that he will play one more year. While he’s a free agent, apparently Travis is willing to walk away from much bigger paydays so he can finish his career (??) with the Chiefs.

Travis Kelce, one of the NFL’s most illustrious tight ends and a three-time champion with the Kansas City Chiefs, has informed the Chiefs that he’s returning for a 14th season with the team, a source told ESPN on Monday.

Kelce made his decision just ahead of the start of the NFL’s free agency period, as he was set to become an unrestricted free agent. As one of the league’s best tight ends, Kelce would’ve been an intriguing option for several teams, but a source told ESPN that he informed the Chiefs on Monday morning his intentions to stay alongside coach Andy Reid — his only coach throughout his NFL career — quarterback Patrick Mahomes and pass rusher Chris Jones.

Two weeks ago, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach acknowledged that the team was hopeful that Kelce would return for another season, one that could be the last in his distinguished career.

“Travis is the best,” Veach said at the NFL combine. “He’s an icon, and hopefully he comes back. We’ll just kind of let that process play out. It’s not your typical 27-year-old [and] first time at free agency. Travis has done everything and has accomplished everything. He’s about to get married. He’s got a lot going on, so I don’t think there’s an element of us not trying to get something done — you need to have some sort of deadline [or] timeline — but at the same time he’s Travis Kelce.”

The details of Kelce’s contract are still unknown, but he could return for a one-year deal or a two-year deal to help give the Chiefs more flexibility with their salary cap.

I can imagine the allure for Travis: finishing his career with Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes, going back to be with “his team,” and trying to put everything he’s got left into ending his career with a bang. That’s his fairytale ending – a push to make it to one more Super Bowl, a push for another ring. Do y’all think Taylor Swift is on board? Weirdly, I bet she is. She seems to enjoy watching Travis work and I bet she wants one more season where she’s the cheerleader with the cute football player.

I will not be supporting the Chiefs. The owner is a maga and so is their kicker. I also suspect the Mahomes fam of being magas. I am done with fascism.

Gads! Well that’s an excellent reason to nope out. It’s easy to identify the big Magats (se what I did there?🥸) and not support them, but I bet if we really knew how many of them there are that we just don’t realize… It pays to do due diligence these days before supporting any business. Thanks for pointing this out. My family teases me because I refuse to support anything with Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise/Travolta/Elizabeth Moss (and any other Scientologists I’m aware of), or Chick-fil-A, Hobby Lobby…

I live in an area near Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University and they have mega entertainment and sports venues. Over the years my kids were invited to a lot of things there—Snowflex, ice skating, et al, and I’d *never* let them go. My husband plays soccer and I frown and growl at him when his community club team plays on any LU fields. I know first hand how that place was built from day 1 under the guise of religion, how local workers/small businesses were stiffed after they did work and weren’t paid….ohhh I could go on and on in ways that’d make your head 🤯. I had close family members who worked there as core staff. I know how the sausage is made and I want nothing to do with it in **any** way. There’s one shopping mall in town that was *donated* to LU. Guess who won’t shop at any store there?!

So yes, put your dollars and support behind your beliefs. For most of us, our loudest voice is $$$ (or Euros, or Pesos, or Yen, or….all the other currencies).

(Sorry to go off and side-jack a Travis Kelce post.)

I’m THRILLED he’s coming back!! Of course he’d never play for another team but the Chiefs. Coach Reid has been instrumental in his life and one more season to try to end on a higher note – and for $12-15m?? I’d do it too! The love of the game, man!!

Travis is going to retire from the Chiefs. That alone is a big deal. I’m sure he is coming back for 1 more season with Patrick and Andy. Plus there are more records to break.

Travis has NOT said “just one more year” that’s everybody else. He’s amped up his health & fitness specifically for resilience/longevity. He wants a longer career bc he loves loves LOVES playing the game, he personally had a great year in 2025. Ed Kelce’s joke has always been that Travis will stop playing when the team locks him out of the bldg. I get it, he’s a water cooler topic who you can hate on from muscle memory alone, it’s easy. Just tee it up and swing.

For the record Tight Ends can go 17 – 20 seasons if they’re smart about it. Look at Travis’ role model Hall of Fame Tight End Tony Gonzalez for proof. (Fun fact, Gonzalez has a son with Lauren Sanchez Bezos.) Brady won a Super Bowl for a new damn team at age 43 AFTER the Patriots replaced him. As a broadcaster Brady has really gotten good whether we like to say it or not, he doesn’t sound like a CTE case.

They ain’t going to the SB next year, but cheers or whatever.

I wish he wouldn’t. It’s his head I worry about!

Wonder if this means they won’t get married this summer after all.
