Jason Momoa was evacuated from his home in O’ahu, Hawaii due to flooding

Hawaii got a jumpstart on April Showers this year, as the state has been deluged for two weeks now with record-breaking rainfall. Winter storm systems called the “Kona lows” are not unusual this time of year, but, of course, climate change has made their impact more devastating. O’ahu has been hit the hardest, experiencing the worst flooding in over 20 years, while the Hawai’i Emergency Management Agency says the 120-year-old Wahiawa dam “is at imminent risk of failure.” And in a cruel twist of fate, most of the destruction is falling on O’ahu’s North Shore, the world-famous locale of big-wave surfing. Evacuation orders were issued on Saturday for 5,500 residents, and among them was actor and first son Jason Momoa. Jason took to his Instagram over the weekend to share updates from the eye of the storm, reported here by Entertainment Weekly:

“I got my family with me. We got out of the North Shore… our power went off… We’re safe for now, but there’s a lot of people who weren’t, so we’re sending all our love,” Momoa shared in a now-expired Instagram story, per PEOPLE. “The North Shore is pretty gnarly right now. So hopefully everyone’s safe and getting out… Stay safe out there.”

The mid-Pacific archipelago has been battered by an unceasingly brutal weather system for two weeks, causing some of the worst damage and flooding in decades. As a second intense storm descended on Oahu’s North Shore, the Aquaman star, who was born, raised, and has lived most of his life on the island, was forced to evacuate, he shared on Saturday.

Momoa also shared several other posts informing his nearly 17 million Instagram followers of the damage — and ways they can help impacted locals.

The actor also posted a video Saturday that showed him and his girlfriend, Adria Arjona, helping deliver food prepared by the Hawaiian diner chain Zippy’s to those who have lost their homes and have otherwise evacuated.

“Aloha everyone, These past weeks have been heavy,” he wrote in the caption. “The storms, the flooding, the constant rain across O’ahu have affected so many of our people especially those already facing hardship. Seeing families displaced, communities struggling, and our unhoused neighbors hit the hardest.”

In other photos and video shared to his stories and grid alike, Momoa provided views of roads destroyed by storm surges, of driftwood and wreckage strewn across an Oahu beach, and of efforts to put together fundraisers.

Momoa was born in Honolulu, the capital of Hawaii and the state’s most populous city. Mayor Rick Blangiardi and other Honolulu officials issued evacuation orders for roughly 5,500 people late last week. They drew attention in particular to a 120-year-old dam in Honolulu that is under threat of falling, per AP.

In addition to the thousands evacuated, over 230 people have been rescued as Oahu faces what could surpass $1 billion in damage from the storms.

This is so awful. I read an account of a farmer who wanted to stay with her livestock, then in a matter of hours had to pull her goats and seven family dogs out of knee and neck-high water. Hawaii’s Democratic Gov. Josh Green reiterated the $1 billion estimate of damages at a press conference, where he also said his office had been “assured” of federal support from the White House. Don’t hold your hanu, Governor. I thought Jason’s video of him and gf Adria Arjona helping deliver food was lovely. Some trolls in the comments called it a publicity stunt, but that’s not the vibe I got at all. This is Jason’s home, they’re in the middle of a disaster, and he has a huge platform to shine a light on what’s happening, ffs. I know there’s a difference between acting and real life, but anyone who watched his series Chief of War last year — the one about Hawaii’s history that he spent years developing — knows how genuinely Jason loves his homeland.

For anyone looking for guidance on ways to help out, I recommend visiting the Hawai’i Emergency Management Agency website. They have pages set up for storm weather updates, who to call if you need help on the ground, and preferred donation organizations.
