Usher: Sean Combs has been ‘misrepresented’, so many people benefited from him

I’ll admit it, I was wrong! My bad. Last week, we learned that Usher and Justin Bieber got into a “heated exchange” at Beyonce and Jay-Z’s Oscar after-party. I sort of defended Usher, saying that I didn’t believe that Usher would have started any confrontation, and that Justin was probably the aggressor. I also shrugged off the rumor that the heated exchange was related in any way to Sean Combs, who is currently sitting in prison for only a small fraction of the crimes he committed against women and men. Turns out, Usher has some f–ked up ideas about Sean Combs, and who knows, Combs probably was the reason why Usher and Justin Bieber got into it at an Oscar party.

Usher is speaking out about Sean “Diddy” Combs’ influence. The “OMG” singer addressed the allegations against the music mogul, who is currently serving a 50-month sentence for prostitution-related charges, emphasizing Combs’ impact as a businessman. When asked to play a word association game in a recent interview for Forbes, Usher (born Usher Raymond IV) was asked what came to mind when he heard Combs’ name.

“Legacy,” Usher told the outlet, later adding, “In many ways, I think certain people are prosecuted and maybe not recognized for the greatness that they offer. I don’t have anything negative to say about Sean Combs because my experience was not what the world has seen and how he’s been misrepresented.”

“I’m not saying that every man is perfect,” he continued. “I’m not saying that all of us don’t have flaws. But I can’t with any sense of humanity not recognize the valuable contributions that this man made for us as Black entrepreneurs, for us as businessmen, for us as people who have transitioned culture and ideas into something that’s tangible.”

And that impact is something Usher can’t ignore. As he put it, “So many people benefitted from what he created and I acknowledge that.”

Noting that Combs was “a mentor” who reminded him of a “really, really hard teacher,” Usher, 47, said that he was able to learn from him “in real time” as his career was taking off.

Today, he still finds Combs’ influence significant, crediting him with “being able to find ways to monetize culture and create something that was not just Black or white. It was colorless. It was green.”

“That’s who I see that man as,” he explained. “And that’s what I choose to remember. I put respect on his name because I realized that what I learned as a businessman before I even understood what business was came as a result of seeing the incredible things that he was able to do and the way that he positioned himself as a businessman.”

[From E! News]

This is so utterly unnecessary from Usher from a PR perspective and moral perspective. Like, just shooting himself in the d–k for no damn reason and letting people know that he doesn’t give a f–k about Combs’ many victims (including poor Cassie, whose bravery is astounding). It reminds me so much of what several of Harvey Weinstein’s collaborators said years ago too, like their biggest f–king concerns were about their artistic legacies being tied to a rampant predator. “Sure, Harvey assaulted, harassed and terrorized hundreds of women over the course of decades, but he produced some good movies too, silver linings!” Don’t play point-counterpoint about this kind of abuse, even when it’s about your guy, the one who mentored you. So is this why Usher and Bieber got into it at Beyonce’s party?

Predators can do great things. Kevin Spacey is a fantastic actor IMO. I actually like a lot of weinstein’s movies (although I feel gross about that now.) Cesar Chavez obviously did a lot for farm workers and the labor movement. And so on.

But it doesn’t excuse the abuse, the assaults, the rapes, etc. It’s not even a “well on the other hand” type of situation. I havent watched a kevin spacey movie in years. I turn off a Diddy song if it comes on the radio. And even now every time i watch LOTR I feel bad that its Liv Tyler and not Ashley Judd.

For me, i’m not going to look at the impact someone like Diddy had on music and say “well this is more important than his victims.” I say “the victims are more important.” and its disappointing that Usher is unwilling to do the same.

At least he’s being honest by saying, I don’t care what Combs did to those women because I benefitted financially and professionally. Now I can be honest and say, I don’t care what Usher does in the future, he could cure cancer and I’ll still see him as filth.

  3. HillaryIsAlwaysRight says:

I’m Team 50 Cent on this. His documentary on Puffy is a public service. Puff is a sick man. Kaiser is right; no one needs to be making public statements supporting him.

  4. Amy Bee says:

Terrible. What is Usher talking about?Diddy took advantage of most of his artistes including Biggie.

  5. Jais says:

    Yeah no.

  6. Not surprised at all by Usher, but it is disappointing. His character came into question for me when he was accused of having sex with a couple of women and they claimed to have contracted STI’s from him. He later settled.

So many disappointing and selfish people.

Don’t know much of what there is to misrepresent about watching a video of a man beating a woman so badly she’s knocked unconscious and has to be dragged out of a hallway, but okay. Guess that’s just typical in their world.

  8. Normades says:

In the exchange with Beiber he was the one reportedly starting it and being aggressive, not Justin. Usher has allegedly done some really horrible stuff to women so honestly this isn’t surprising. Makes me wonder if someone from Diddy’s camp isn’t blackmailing him à la Epstein

  9. Yup, Me says:

Something about this reminds me of how I felt when Left Eye died and Usher was out making statements about it (ostensibly because he and Chili had been dating but mostly because he’s a famewh*re). Every time I heard his voice in another media outlet, I was like “Usher needs to shut the fk up.”

  10. Chantal1 says:

Thanks Usher, for showing us your true disgusting colors! You should be worried about your own legacy. Stupid move. Makes me think that Diddy has something on Usher. I thought he was suspiciously quiet about Diddy but gave him the benefit of the doubt. Back in the day, there were some rumors swirling about Diddy and young Usher and a hospital visit. I ignored those rumors then but now? IDK. Usher has also recently been accused of passing or giving Justin to LA Reid and Diddy. Allegedly, Usher was feeling disrespected by Bieber and Bieber felt that Usher didn’t protect him, and that led to their confrontation at Beyonce’s party. Unbelievably, many of these people still want to work w/ Diddy after he gets out of prison. These Diddi-ites should film a new reality show, How To Needlessly Tank Your Career. They need to learn how to read the room and get some f’ing morals!

  11. Mel says:

The story about Usher supposedly is that he’s a well know super spreader of herpes. So if that is indeed true, I can see him propping up Diddy, he’s just as disgusting as he is.

  12. Nicole says:

My question is what does Diddy have on him? There are rumors that when Usher was starting out, Diddy r*ped him so badly that hey put him in the hospital. Maybe he was being pressed by him? I know I’m being overly charitable. As the youngs ask, “Was silence not an option?”
