Angelina Jolie & Zahara Jolie spoke at a mother-daughter brunch for Z’s sorority

Zahara Jolie will soon graduate from college! Zahara attends Spelman College in Atlanta, one of America’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Zahara’s freshman year was 2022-23, and Angelina Jolie spoke last fall about how Zahara was enjoying her final year of her four-year bachelor’s program (I’m assuming). Zahara has blossomed at Spelman – she joined a sorority (Alpha Kappa Alpha) and she’s returned home to LA during school breaks, and attended events with her mom. Zahara has also gotten involved with charity work in a big way. Well, Zahara invited Angelina to the AKA’s mother-daughter brunch, and Zahara made a speech about her mom. *sobs*

Angelina Jolie’s daughter Zahara is sharing insight into their magnificent relationship. The 21-year-old was joined by the Eternals actress during an Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority event at Spelman College where she detailed the value of mother-daughter bonds, specifically the one she has with her own mom.

“It felt challenging to find the words,” Zahara said in a clip from the speech shared to X April 26. “Not challenging because I don’t value it, but because my mom and I have a unique, almost kindred relationship that can be hard to put into words.”

Nodding to her 2005 adoption—Angelina and ex Brad Pitt adopted Zahara during a trip to Ethiopia at the time—the college student noted the love she and her mother share is “a found one.”

“I was adopted at six months old and given some of the most special and loving people as my siblings,” Zahara continued, “with a mom who raised us on the value of helping others, being kind and always striving for growth as people.”

As Zahara put it, “I am grateful to have had a role model show me what it looks like to be a decent human being.”

Elsewhere in her speech, Zahara nodded to the struggle of being raised in the spotlight, admitting she knew it would be a challenge to forge her own path at Spelman separate from her siblings Maddox, 24, Pax, 22, Shiloh, 19 and Knox and Vivienne, 17.

“With the addition of the public life that we live, it can be difficult to find those special and intimate moments without being overwhelmed with the many eyes that are on us,” she continued. “This has never stopped my mom from being curious about all that I am learning in and outside of my classrooms at Spelman.”

Of course, Zahara also emphasized her mother’s impact on her values and sense of self.

“She is the most selfless, loving and understanding woman that I get to call my mom,” she said. “I think back to a quote I saw years ago that said ‘I am a strong woman because a strong woman raised me.’ Thank you, Mom.”

This is beautiful. It’s also funny because look who Zahara is not referencing or crediting whatsoever: her dogs-t father, the man who terrorized and abused her and her siblings on a plane in 2016. While Zahara has not, to my knowledge, legally dropped “Pitt” from her name, we know that she simply uses “Jolie” as her surname in college. Anyway, this was really beautiful. I think it’s so cool that Angelina is welcomed into these Black spaces as well – and she does it respectfully, because she fully acknowledges that she’s merely a guest.

Remind me of a speech Maddox made in Cambodia, thanking his mother and siblings, remembered a Brad supporter, that could not believe he did not mention Brad once.
A reporter had to tell Brad, which college Zahara was attending.

Lovely speech, lovely women. Well done Angelina! Their children seem to be doing extremely well without their a-hole father. She must be so proud of all of them! I love how the ones who have spoken publicly give so much credit to Angie and completely ignore Brad. Which says so much…

Angelina’s children are a testament to what a good mother she has been. She has done everything she can to protect them and nurture them and raise them to be decent human beings. That man has proven to be a non-factor. He has nothing to offer them. Zahara’s speech was lovely and I am so glad that Angelina has had the presence of mind and respect to encourage Zahara to embrace her Blackness and be in community with other Black people. As a Black woman in this world – that is SO needed.

I’m going to cry. Zahara isn’t a baby anymore!!! She’s graduating. I would love to see what she does next. She has such a bright future ahead of her. Whatever she chooses to do, I hope she’ll still pop in for a red carpet appearance with her mother from time to time. Zahara is absolutely gorgeous and I love her fashion style. It’s always lovely to see her and mom holding hands. Okay, getting misty again…

Ahhh, she’s all gown up. Ang is a fabulous mother, her children are definitely a proof of that.
