Meryl Streep is the most elite actor in America ever

The White House Project's 2010 EPIC Awards Gala

These are photos from last week, when Meryl Streep attended the EPIC Awards in New York City. The awards are given out to celebrate women in leadership positions in media and culture. Meryl was there to present, not receive an award, which is weird. When I think of women who deserve more awards, Meryl’s name pops up first. Apparently, Meryl was lovely and gracious as always, even joking about adjusting her bra strap in front of the packed audience.

This morning it was announced that Meryl is the now the most elite actress in the world. She’s just been named an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. This is the only time in the organization’s history that they’ve let an actress – and only an actress – in, traditionally going for directors (like Martin Scorsese and Woody Allen) or writers (like Toni Morrison) or artists (like Jasper Johns). Honestly, I’d heard of this organization before, but I had no idea it was this big of a deal:

Meryl Streep has another academy to thank. The star of films such as “Sophie’s Choice” and “Julie & Julia” has been named an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, an elite club that includes Toni Morrison, Stephen Sondheim and Jasper Johns. Not even two Oscars, seven Golden Globes and a lifetime achievement prize from the American Film Institute prepared Streep for this.

“I have to say that I was stunned, and when they sent me the roster of people in the academy I just burst into tears,” Streep said in a recent telephone interview. “I couldn’t believe that I’d be even allowed in the kitchen.”

The 112-year-old academy announced Monday that Streep and conductor James Levine had been elected to a special category, established in 1983, for “Americans of great distinction in the arts whose work falls outside the traditional departments” of music (composition), literature and art.

Directors Woody Allen (with whom Streep worked in “Manhattan”) and Martin Scorsese and choreographers Twyla Tharp and Paul Taylor are among the current members. While Allen and former member Orson Welles both worked extensively on screen, Streep is the first to be chosen solely for acting.

“Both of this year’s inductees are performing artists, and both are at the peak of their careers,” said poet and Academy President J.D. McClatchy. “James Levine’s conducting and Meryl Street’s acting are extraordinary examples of insight, depth and virtuosity.”

Architects Fumihiko Maki of Japan and Alvaro Siza of Portugal were added to the academy’s honorary category for foreign artists. Inductees into the main body include authors Marilynne Robinson, Francine Prose, Thomas McGuane and Richard Powers, composers Tania Leon and Fred Lerdahl, architect Thom Mayne and painters Thomas Nozknowski and Peter Saul. Members are elected for life (openings are created when a member dies) and encouraged to serve on committees that distribute prizes, but there is no responsibility beyond agreeing to join.

Streep sums up her own category: “I’m in a particular subset of members that’s not even allowed to vote.”

The inductees demonstrate again how far the academy has changed from its frankly snobbish roots, when modernists, women, non-whites and Jews were not welcome and the presence of a “lowly” actress, even one as talented as Streep, might have set off mass resignations. Saul, for instance, is a founder of Pop Art whose lush and sometimes lurid works include “Donald Duck Crucifixion” and “Sex Deviant Being Executed.”

“I was quiet surprised and even shocked when I got the news because I always thought of myself as a `bad’ artist and that the academy was a place devoted to `good’ artists,” he said. “I felt a bit uncomfortable for a moment, but then I thought, `What the heck, why be childish?’ So I went with it.”

McGuane, whose novels include “Keep the Change” and “Ninety-Two in the Shade,” has been previously cited by the academy. He received an award in 1972 for his novel “Bushwhacked Piano” and remembered speaking at the ceremony with Bernard Malamud, Walker Percy and Eudora Welty.

“All those people are gone but remembering them and that event has made this a gratifying personal landmark,” he said.

New members will be inducted at an afternoon ceremony next month at the academy’s beaux arts complex in upper Manhattan, just off the Hudson River. Author Calvin Trillin, elected to the academy two years ago, will be a featured speaker. Streep plans to attend.

“I just hope to have lots of cocktails and talk about high-fallutin’ things,” Streep said.

Like they do in Hollywood.

“Uh, yeah, of course.”

Well, good for her. If it was going to be an actor, it should be Meryl. Or Jack Nicholson. But Meryl is probably better. You know what I was thinking about regarding Meryl recently? She’s only 60 years old. She’ll be 61 this year – and God willing, she’s healthy and will be healthy and able to work for another 20 years. Let’s be unkind and say that Meryl only does a movie a year for the next twenty years – how many more Oscars is she going to be nominated for? My guess: Meryl has at least five Oscar-nominated performances in her, at least. And I can guarantee, if she doesn’t win her third Oscar sometime soon, the Academy is just going to give her one of the lifetime achievement awards or the Thalberg Award, or something, just so that we can appreciate Meryl even more.

  1. bite me says:

don’t like her, i think shes way too smug

  2. ! says:

lol Meryl is anything but smug. But with an acting career like hers she’s damn well entitled to it if that’s how she wants to be!

  3. Rachel says:

@ Bite Me: There are no words to describe the horror I just felt at your comment.

  4. Ron says:

    What a wonderful life she’s having 🙂

  5. Dorothy says:

    @Rachel – AGREED!!!

  6. MJ says:

I dunno, I think she seems completely down to earth, hilarious and very humble, in my opinion. Yet I don’t find her humility insincere. I think she genuinely appreciates how lucky she is and what a charmed life she leads, while at the same time she is proud of her own hard work and expertly honed talent. I don’t get smug from her at all, though I do think she is confident in what she does. She is the greatest living actor, period (IMHO).

  7. buckley says:

Love her. It’s almost impossible for me not to watch something she’s in. She’s THAT good.
Just watched Julie/Julia and she was great.
She was outstanding in Devil Wears Prada.

  8. GossipG1rl54 says:

Do you think she’s had work? She looks just the perfect amount of old for her age.

  9. Obvious says:

I have a Meryl Obsession. yes with a capital O. She is beautiful, charming gracious and funny. I am impressed with her body of work and think she has a place in Hollywood for as long as she’d like it. She will get a lifetime achievement from the academy, but i hope she wins her 3rd Oscar on her merits, not because of the lifetime.

@Bite Me, you have made me sad today.

  10. Alist says:

    She’s real. That’s why she’s beautiful!

  11. TaylorB says:

If I were to start batting for the ‘home team’ Ms Streep would be my choice for a partner. Charming, talented, lovely, and graceful… I love me some Meryl.

p.s. I just saw the comment from Obvious, and couldn’t agree more.

  12. SammyHammy says:

I can’t think of another actor, male or female, that deserves the honor more.

  13. simplicity says:

There aren’t too many women in the biz that stir inspiration, (this side of the pond), but Meryl is one of them.

Vassar grad, talent in both theater and film, loves both equally.

Has maintained a distance from the LA scene, while raising a family.

  14. Emma says:

She hasn’t had any work done. She said in an interview once that as an actor, she would never do anything to her face as it is her main instrument. (or something to that effect; that quote is not verbatim),

ANYway. Me thinks she is the coolest chick in the world and the greatest actress.

  15. canadianchick says:

Love her-Im glad she’s acted during my generation, and hope she keeps at it for a couple more decades more. Class act.

  16. I Choose Me says:

I think Meryl is a fantastic actor (her performance in Sophie’s Choice is truly stellar) who’s earned her place as Hollywood elite but I don’t think she’s THE greatest actor of her generation. I might even go so far as to say that she’s a little overrated. Yeah I said it. Meryl is overrated.

  17. Feebee says:

she is all sorts of awesomeness.

  18. Jeri says:

    Yup, she is the BEST!!!

  19. lola lola says:

Bite me is right. Doesn’t anyone else remember all those interviews years ago about how fabulous she thought she was? She has been out of the public eye for some time but I remember her comments quite well…
Jessica Lange is an incredibly underrated actor too. Where is she when the great roles are being handed out?

  20. Ron says:

    @choose me

If she is not the greatest actor of her generation….who is? And it better be someone magnificent. And don’t come back with DeNiro or Nicholson…..

  21. velcrodots says:

But the most elite actor EVER is Dame Judi Dench. Nuff said.

  22. JM says:

Almost everyone here got it exactly right: She is the best!!

She has every right to be smug, but isn’t. (Confident does not = smug.) She makes fun of herself more than anyone else . . .and if you’ve read comments about how great she said she was, believe me it was tongue-in-cheek.

BTW, Judi Dench? Sorry, no way. Awesome lady. Could never cover the breadth of characters Meryl has done.

  23. JM says:

Most of you got it exactly right: Meryl is the best!!

She has every right to be smug, but isn’t. (Confident does not = smug.) And a great sense of humor . . .if you heard her say how great she said she was, believe me it was tongue-in-cheek.

Judi Dench? Sorry, nuh-uh. Awesome lady but could never cover the breadth of characters Meryl has done.

  24. snapdragon says:

i like meryl, and she does seem like a lovely woman, but her acting bores me. she doesn’t take any real risks anymore.

  25. Fluffy Kitten Tail says:

She is good, but she is not the best or most elite ever!

  26. Guest says:

Actors aren’t athletes with stats to compare. There is not best actor, or most elite actor, neither is there a best performance.
I find people’s constant labeling of who’s the best, or the incessant compiling of top ten lists for areas that don’t warrant such thing quite ridiculous.
I’m not saying you can’t rate actors and place certain actors as good/talented/elite, but to single someone out within a talented group as the best is ridiculous.
Is there an objective rating system when comparing brilliant performances by say (and the examples are completely arbitrary) Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest or Pacino in The Godfather.

  27. Aussie Mama says:

Meryl Streep is what the example should be. A Lady, so talented, ageing so beautifully, naturally, still va-va-voom, Christ her face even moves, what a rarity for Hollywood. She is one sophisticated, sexy Mama. Love her and all of her work. She deserves every bit of success that comes her way. Onya!

  28. cara says:

when I think back at the movies she has made in the past as well as the ones she has been making now,I would have to agree.
She is a amazing actress and I think Cate Blachett is the only one near as good as Meryl imo

  29. Aussie Mama says:

Such Diversity in an Actress I have never seen, she can go from Silkwood, Kramer VS Kramer, Doubt, Julia and Julia, Death Becomes Her, Mama Mia, The Hours, Devil Wears Prada, Sophies Choice. The lady does it all, every frickin’ category and absolutely kills it, everytime. The Master Artist, complete with a well rounded scandal-less family life, so normal, so humble, so beautiful. So deserving.

  30. Aussie Mama says:

lola lola, had jessica lange not gone overboard in the surgery dept. maybe she’d still be getting the roles, but have a look at her… she doesn’t even resemble herself anymore. very sad. Come to think of it, I cannot even rtecall a movie title of hers? Forgetable to say the least.

  31. Aussie Mama says:

Cara, Blanchett is awesome, but Streep has 20+ years on her in this industry and age wise. Clean, scandal-less 20+ years. Blanchett may just get there, if she keeps doing what she is doing and keeps her nose clean, as Meryl has done.
To resist all of the temptations and still manage to raise a family, keep a marriage, I truly take my hat off to her.

  32. Aussie Mama says:

    Bite me???
    Really???
    Bloody hell mate!
    No, no and no again.
    So very, very wrong Dear.

  33. Ruffian9 says:

    Feebee: YES!

    That is all.

  34. London Lady says:

They let Judi Dench in last year- she is an actress too..are we sure she is the first female actor to be let in? Also, Angelica Huston is a member too..

  35. lrm says:

the recent one she was in about the orchid hunt, set in florida-i forget the name-it wasn’t a well known film,i don’t think-but the co-star got an award for his performance [well deserved for sure],and she was fantastic in this movie. nic cage also in it-anyone remember/see it?

anyway, other than this and sophie’s choice and the devil wears prada was great-but i agree she can be boring and choose the same roles-ie, roles with similar ‘tones’ to them-over and over again. But she is great.
I also think winslett’s got it in her, along with blanchett. Eternal Sunshine is one of the best films ever,IMO. just me…..anyway, meryl doesnt seem s mug in this interview-haven’t seen any in the past to know of her….but she’s darn good. and I think she’s the kind of actor where other actors’ performances are raised when they work alongside of her. She raises the bar for the whole movie, and better performances across the board are the result. I think there are a few others who can do that, as well….deniro, maybe sarandon on some occasions, heath ledger was heading in that direction….

  36. Carol says:

I still find it difficult to believe that I live in a world in which Meryl Streep only has 2 Oscars in her possession. How has she not broken the record many times over by now?

  37. Crash2GO2 says:

She really is the finest actor alive today, and I feel extremely fortunate to have her. My goal is to have each and every one of her movies on DVD.

  38. wakeb4Ubreak says:

Oh please, she’s just another Satanic actress plain and simple. Wake Up! Do your research! Hollywood and the Music industry is completely run by Satanists. Did any of you watch, I mean really watch the 2009 MTV Music Awards? The whole awards show took the most common rituals of occult orders and re-enacted them in a show witnessed by the entire world.

  39. Strawberry says:

    Whoa. whoa.

That last comment was just weird and crazy.

  40. Sincerity says:

I just adored her in “It’s Complicated” and “Doubt”. Meryl Streep is a very talented, well-respected actress with an enormous amount of “staying power” which says a great deal about her character in a business in which you’re “here today and gone tomorrow”. Congratulations, to her. I’m quite sure that she’ll continue to collect more awards as time passes.

  41. Milan says:

To Bite, if she is smug, she has every right to be. And contrary to what one of the posts above stated, she is not lucky…she worked extremely hard at her craft. Pursued it to college level, paid her dues in theatre and small films. She is anything but ‘lucky’ second of all, she takes her craft seriously and put in the hours and the sweat to hone her acting and become one of the best presently and in the past.

Unlike some of the trash acting we are subjected to…cough cough, miley cyrus, cough Britney cough, cough justin timberlake, cough cough. I mean wasn’t Miley commenting just the other day about how she’s ditching music to become aserious actress, erm this actually means taking time off and going to acting classes with known professionals.

This does not mean riding on the high of idiot tweens, who’d follow a squirrel if Disney packaged it right. I’m not saying that People like Miley shoudn’t act, but they should not expect us or the academy award to take them seriously. I mean, with this beyotches it just so happens that One fine day….tadaaaah! bitches, i’m an actress! if that is the logic that Miley is following to become a serious and mature actress, then tadaaaaah! I’m dropping out of law school and i’m simply going to anounce that i’m a serious lawyer. The bar can go and suck it.

People like Meryl STreep, or Cate Blanchett, Or….Christian Bale etc, they are a dying breed. The serious actress, who actually treats her profession with respect, like a lawyer, or an engineer or a doctor would or rather should…they are so few you can count them on one hand.

Soon we’ll be left with just Miley, Taylor squared, Shiny Bastard McSparkleson, His fiancee to be…Ungrateful Brooding Bitch (don’t crack a smile coz i’m better than evryone else) McSparkleson. I just can’t take it anymores…sob, the horror! The Terror! Oh the horrible horror!

  42. I Choose Me says:

@20, sorry can’t make out the name. I don’t think there’s a THE greatest actor/actress period but keeping in mind the matter of personal taste, Helen Mirren.

  43. cara says:

gosh what was that movie she played in with Jack Nicholson?
set in NY,Jack was the cheating husband and M was the mama? She left him and went to live with her father for a time.
Can’t place it at all,but what a darling movie.Whenever I watched it I would cry my eyes out..I remember Carly Simons say in it too.
Anyways if you haven’t watched this movie it is so freakin classic, make sure you don’t miss it

  44. Michelle says:

I just re-watched “The Devil Wears Prada” a few nights ago, and remembered just how much I love Meryl.

  45. benny says:

I agree with others who think she’s the greatest actor alive today. (For past actors, I’d vote for Paul Newman).

  46. velcrodots says:

@#42 – yeah Helen Mirren is a close second for me, maybe even first equal. Ian McKellan rates right up there too.

  47. amy says:

    that’s all…..
