On Sunday, we discussed the back-and-forth reporting around the Duchess of Sussex possibly scoring a role in Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen. The series films in the Cotswolds and the second season will soon drop on Netflix. The original story was that Meghan was in “early stages” conversations about starring in the third season, which has not been greenlit, written or confirmed. It would not surprise me at all if the rumor-mongering about Meghan and this show was designed to be mutually beneficial: promotion for the second season and letting producers know that Meghan is open to returning to acting. At a very basic level, I would love for Meghan to go back to acting and I think it would be fun for her to get a role in a British production. But I’m really not sure what to make of all of the back-and-forth in the industry papers and the British media.
First up, the Sun’s sources claim that Meghan is still “in talks” for The Gentlemen but “no formal agreement has been reached.” Considering the overlap – Netflix and WME for both Meghan and Guy Ritchie – I think she’s genuinely being considered for something, I just don’t believe that “being in talks for a possible role which hasn’t been written yet” is the reason why the Sussexes are moving back to the UK. The Times of London had a different take on all of this:
Preliminary conversations between the Duchess of Sussex and Guy Ritchie about a role in his gangster series The Gentlemen were leaked to bolster her acting credentials, television insiders believe. Meghan, 45, was widely reported to have held exploratory talks with the Hollywood director about the potential for her to appear in his Netflix show after an initial article on the US entertainment website Deadline on Friday.
At present Meghan is not thought to have been offered any role on The Gentleman, which is yet to be recommissioned for a third series.
One well-placed source said the reports that she was being considered to appear on a high-profile show served to make her appear in demand.
“You can well imagine her people might take [a conversation] like that and spin it to create a ‘build it and they will come’ narrative,” they said.
Netflix bosses were understood to have been in the dark about any potential offer, indicating discussions had taken place between Megan and Ritchie directly. Usually any decisions relating to casting such a high-profile individual in a television show would be taken jointly between the broadcaster and production company.
“If I was Netflix then I would want to be across that approach,” another executive at a rival streamer said.
However, one individual who has worked closely with Meghan said that they were sceptical that a role on The Gentlemen would materialise and dismissed the reports as a cynical PR tactic.
“It makes her look good and intimates that the relationship with Netflix is ongoing,” they said. “They like to use Netflix as a way to keep stories about Meghan going.”
On Sunday Tina Brown, the former editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair and The New Yorker, reported that the offer had been withdrawn after a critical response. “Public backlash was too fierce,” Brown said. “This does not bode well for Meghan’s acting comeback in the UK.”
Brown’s update prompted some surprise from those close to the show who said that they had not been aware of an overly negative reaction to the news which had mainly been greeted with surprise. “There might have been some hate from the usual suspects in the dark corners of the internet — but there hasn’t been a huge backlash,” one said.
One of Netflix’s top executives is understood to have suggested “the best thing [Meghan] could do is return to acting” after an underwhelming response to her reality series With Love, Meghan.
A cynical PR tactic like… using Meghan’s name to promote the second season, which is coming out next week? That kind of cynical? Now Theo James and the rest of the cast will field questions about Meghan’s possible involvement during their press junket, and every time they say anything about Meghan, it will make international headlines (especially if they say something snide).
Incidentally, The Gentlemen isn’t the only British production trying to connect themselves to Meghan. The long-running soap opera EastEnders is introducing a new character named Meghan (with an H and everything) who is described as “confident, gorgeous and ready to cause chaos.” The studio claims it’s just a coincidence.

I don’t know many talks about how this will bring tons of promotions etc. But these kinds of promotions and marketing works very well for reality tv shows or lifestyle shows. I mean movies and tv shows doesn’t like these kind of promotions at all. They hate any controversy from main cast and they try to avoid casting this person.
I don’t know why meghan pr is shut down this ? Not every pr is good pr and her meghan has dragged unnecessarily.
I don’t get why they don’t shut this down. Especially since they are now quoting Netflix executives commenting her show wasn’t well received.
Because it’s not what the Netflix executive said. The Netflix executive (if it was even true) said “The best thing is for Meghan to return to acting.” If I’m a Netflix executive, and I also have Guy Ritchie on Netflix, I’m thinking: “This is absolutely a GREAT idea, for Netflix and for all involved. Christmas bonus for me!”
Then the British tabs put the negative spin on it: “…because her show wasn’t well received” which then gives the implication: Meghan is desperate, she needs to go back to acting because she’s failed at everything Hollywood. That’s what the British tabs want you to believe. It’s not what the Netflix executive said, at all!
Let’s be real. There’s a very good chance that WLM wins an Emmy. Why clap back with mere words when u might have tangible evidence very soon. Do I know she will win? No. But even just saying she was in an Emmy nominated show is a big deal. Those choosing to actively belittle that just look like haters and no lie, why fight with them. It’s giving pathetic to get in fights with people over this.
Kaiser literally has this in the article above: One of Netflix’s top executives is understood to have suggested “the best thing [Meghan] could do is return to acting” after an underwhelming response to her reality series With Love, Meghan.
@Chilling but the quotation marks are the important part of that The Netflix executive could have said the best thing would be for her to return to acting….because she’s so good on screen, because she’s a star, because it would be a huge hit, etc. The times is adding the part about the underwhelming response on its own.
The quotes were specifically around the part of the phrase “The best thing Meghan could do is return to acting”, not around the phrase –after an underwhelming response to her reality series–That is a choice, and probably had to be done that way so they don’t get sued.
That’s assuming any of this is real and not Tina Brown’s fever dream, so 🤷♀️
Well my personal hypothesis is that Meghan and Harry have long understood that they are engaged in a PR war with the British/US/Murdoch right-wing media. The best way to manage this is not to be just fire-fighting reactively, but to also have a medium-term strategy.
This strategy could aim to target and discredit the many hateful journalists who pay their mortgages by inventing BS to slag off Meghan and Harry.
Planting fake stories could credibly be part of such a strategy. It’s certainly made that old hag Tina Brown look completely ridiculous with what she thought was such an incredible scoop about The Gentlemen!
I hope Meghan comes back to acting but I’m not very excited about it being in the Gentleman show, but I would give it another chance if she was in season three.. I know I won’t be watching season two, I didn’t care for season one at all.
I think a return to acting is definitely a good thing for her. The problem is that her roles would be strictly limited as long as she is royal adjacent. Truly interesting characters and situations would be closed to her because of her title. I doubt she’s interested in strictly prim, proper, and boring roles.
Yep. She’s going to have to make sure nothing she does embarasses the Crown.
This rumor was started by Tina Brown, who hates Meghan. Amplified by the UK media. Spreads worldwide. Now, debunked by Tina Brown. Saying Meghan is a failure. It was all lies from the beginning. Tv shows and movies don’t do this type of fan casting. The supporters of the shows and movie do it. Plus Guy Ritches never does stunts pr. First hint It was a lie from start to finish… season 3 hasn’t been renewed or written. How can she be casted or in early talks for a role that doesn’t exist.
Everyone has heard of Meghan, and dozens of articles about her flood the media every day. This is the first I’ve heard of this series, so it’s clear who is riding on whose coattails.
This was the tabloid press telling Meghan they control the narrative. Nothing more and certainly nothing from Meghan.
Season 3 doesn’t exist as it hasn’t been greenlit. I think Tina Brown, the British press and the trades fell for a fake story hence Tina Brown coming the next day with the unbelievable backlash story.
Her team is letting her down. She’s being torn to shreds and attacked. Nothing about allowing this go on is good for her or her image. This has been my issue for a while and no they don’t need to respond to everything but things like this that are everywhere and damaging should be shut down, especially with one of “Netflix’s top executives” trash talking her show.
She’s always been torn to shreds and attacked, let’s be real. I’m sorry but acting like this is bad for her image when to me this is nothing new . Over the past few years, VF, Variety and the Hollywood Reporter have all taken part in tearing down her image. The BM tabloids never once stopped. So I’m just not moved by this being any different.
Nobody who is suggesting they push back on some of this stuff is unaware she has always been under attack. Frankly that’s *why* people are making these suggestions. It’s true the tabloids have always been unfair, but in response to this the New York Times is even rolling out major pieces about how they failed in California basically. The BBC too. They’re all running with this because there’s no guidance and honestly I think this leaked in the first place. They don’t need to push back on everything or even most things, but a concise statement on the overall nature of this would help.
I hope it’s not Meghan and her team releasing all of this stuff, like “in talks with Guy Ritchie.” I would hate to think she and her team are that messy, but who knows?
I suppose it will never happen, but I would love for her to be on EastEnders!
Meh. Meghan does not need her acting credentials bolstered. GMAFB. She could find a job with a snap of her fingers let’s be real due to the exposure it would bring. And WLM is nominated for an Emmy and might very well win. Cookie Queens has gotten great reviews and I bet it gets nominated for awards. All the people worried in the comments about how her team is letting her down and why don’t they just clap back right now bc her image is suffering, like her image hasn’t constantly been under attack and is always under attack. Let it play out and have patience bc I have a feeling some licks are gonna be had in the future and all these concerns are gonna look silly. I could be wrong but we’ll see. There is one work area that I am slightly slightly critical of Meghan and it’s one that hasn’t been mentioned in a while so ima keep my mouth shut but I hope there are plans in play.
Is the fierce public backlash in the room with you now, Tina Brown???
