‘Tis the season for news about the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Since 2019, Jay-Z’s Roc Nation has worked with the NFL to select and produce the Halftime Show. The NFL gave Roc Nation pretty broad control over the Halftime Show, although we occasionally hear stories about the NFL nit-picking this or that. Still, Jay-Z is “the decider.” And it looks like Jay has made a decision about next year’s Halftime show: Jay-Z has chosen himself. From Puck News, which broke the story:
After weeks of handwringing, Jay-Z, the chief decision-maker on who plays the Super Bowl halftime show, has finally picked the artist who will take the stage in L.A. in February: himself. That’s according to multiple sources, who say the pick has long felt inevitable and more compelling than Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber, both of whom were considered for SBLXI. Besides, a Jay-Z performance is the natural next step in the $5 million-a-year deal his Roc Nation signed with the NFL in 2019—and re-upped in 2024— to curate and produce the halftime show. The league re-upped that deal in 2024 for another five years. (Reps for the NFL and Roc Nation did not respond to a request for comment.)
Jay-Z, 56, feels like more of a consensus choice than last year’s performer, Bad Bunny, who had the audacity to be born in Puerto Rico, sing in Spanish, and preach a message of hemispheric unity. The billionaire rapper/entrepreneur is married to Beyoncé and boasts a deep catalog of hits that Gen X and Millennial fans know by heart. His longtime ties to Barack Obama—who helped induct him into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021—may draw criticism from the Fox News set, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Jay was hired by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to make the halftime show cool and build goodwill with casual fans turned off by the P.R. spasms of the Colin Kaepernick era.
The 2027 game feels like the right timing for the Brooklyn rapper, who has been breaking attendance records at stadiums across North America as he celebrates the 30th anniversary of his debut, Reasonable Doubt, and the 25th anniversary of The Blueprint. In July, he grossed more than $42 million across three sold-out shows at Yankee Stadium. He crushed his May 30 headlining set at the 80,000-person Roots Picnic in Philadelphia (where he took some shots at Kaepernick), and last month he grossed $12 million from a sold-out crowd in Paris. His biggest feat, reuniting the Fugees last month at his two sold-out London shows at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, is the type of TV moment the Super Bowl halftime show is made for. And a Jay-fronted show would surely lean on his Rolodex, if not his marriage, to deliver those kinds of cameos. (Another sign he’s in legacy-burnishing mode: the eight-part, Rick Rubin–featuring documentary currently streaming on HBO.)
Jay-Z could formally announce the Super Bowl gig this weekend, when he plays the first of two nearly sold-out shows at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Still, the booking isn’t without risk. Unlike Bad Bunny last year or Kendrick Lamar in 2025, Jay-Z hasn’t had a major hit since 2013, when Beyoncé’s “Drunk in Love” reached number two. He hasn’t released an album since 2017’s double-platinum 4:44. But chart position isn’t what drives live music success. It’s about how an artist makes people feel, not what they’ve done lately. For a man looking to solidify his legacy, it’s a smart move. It’s certainly not about the money.
“Unlike Bad Bunny last year or Kendrick Lamar in 2025, Jay-Z hasn’t had a major hit since 2013…” I mean, that’s a feature not a bug. There have been many nostalgia-bait Halftime performers, and that’s what this would be. It would also be fan-service for people in their 40s and older, people who actually remember when Jay-Z’s albums came out and when everyone knew all of his big hits when they were on the charts. This would be like when Paul McCartney did the Halftime Show, you know? Plus there’s a good chance that Jay-Z’s wife would make another Halftime appearance too! And that’s always a BFD.
Regarding the other options, Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber… I’m honestly not sure Miley has the catalogue? Does she? She has some big hits for sure, but I feel like she might put up a fight about doing “Party in the USA” or “Wrecking Ball.” I actually think Justin would be a good Halftime pick, but I get why Roc Nation would seemingly make him wait.

Well, it seems like a funny “pick” considering he’s the one deciding….”I choose….ME!!!!!”
But objectively I don’t think its a bad choice. I think there would absolutely be a lot of guest stars and cameos. but I also think its gotten to the point where people expect that from the halftime shows. I loved Bad Bunny’s last year, and Kendrick Lamar’s the year before that, but otherwise my two most recent faves were JLo/Shakira and Dr. Dre/Eminem/Snoop Dogg et al in 2022. I could see this having that same kind of vibe as that 2022 show, and that show was great.
The issue with Justin is that while he has hits and a big fan base, his performance at the World Cup halftime show was an energy downer. It didn’t sound bad but it was very mellow and I’d doubt that’s the vibe they’d want.
And that mess as headliner at Coachella didn’t help matters either.
Have absolutely loved Jay-Z for years and would — will — watch the Super Bowl just to watch him perform. I’m soooo not the demographic, but that’s kind of the point of him. He’s so much more intelligent than all the other artists who kind of attempt social commentary. And bouncy. And funny. And happy. All the emotions. You don’t often get the whole fully dimensional mirror of the world in one person.
I hope he turns out to be an opening act for Beyonce, like Cold Play was.
Why should Justin Timberlake get another chance at a Superbowl Halftime Show, when he left Janet Jackson to take all the blame for the infamous ‘wardrobe malfunction’?
This article mentions Justin Bieber not Timberlake.
Oops my bad!
Oh, how exciting. Guess this will save me some time.
I will just go back and rewatch Madonna and Prince and Springsteen instead.
He should have booked Miley. I’m not really her fan either but I would tune in to hear and see her.
He is just old and boring. And I say that as an old and boring person myself.
But I guess you get what you pay for. So, here we are. He’s getting what he paid for!
Bought and sold, all the way down.
Eh.
Since when is it a bad thing to have an act that doesn’t have a current hit perform at the Superbowl? Have people forgotten that Rhianna was a headliner a few years ago. She hasn’t put out an album in almost a decade not to mention one year the Superbowl halftime act was Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg and Eminem. What are we doing here?
Metallica is right there. Just saying.
I’m not a Jay Z fan so he doesn’t excite me as a performer. Personally, I never get super excited over rap performers for the Halftime show (I did enjoy Kendrick Lamar’s performance somewhat), but that’s just my preference.
But he did wait several years before picking himself to perform considering it’s his company that manages the Halftime show. So I’ll give him that! He waited and was patient and he was bound to perform at some point while Roc Nation sponsors the Halftime show.
A huge contingent will be tuning in just to see if Beyoncé appears.. right?
